Summary: The study analyzed data of esophageal cancer patients visited Japanese hospitals in 2014, finding squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma accounted for the majority. Significant differences were observed in 5-year survival rates among different treatment modalities, with a substantial proportion of thoracoscopic esophagectomies performed. Utilizing the JES and UICC staging systems for esophageal cancer staging demonstrated excellent discriminative ability in predicting patient survival.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether routine thoracic duct resection improves the prognosis of patients with esophageal cancer after radical esophagectomy. The study found that thoracic duct resection did not improve the overall survival of patients with esophageal cancer and may even lead to distant metastases. Therefore, prophylactic thoracic duct resection is not recommended in patients with esophageal cancer.

Summary: This study aimed to examine whether indiscriminate thoracic duct resection improved the prognosis of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). The results showed that thoracic duct resection did not contribute to improved survival and was associated with more organ metastases compared to thoracic duct preservation. Therefore, indiscriminate thoracic duct resection should be avoided in patients with ESCC.

Achalasia and esophageal cancer: a large database analysis in Japan

Summary: The study found a low incidence of esophageal cancers in Japanese patients with achalasia and related esophageal motility disorders, although there is a certain risk. Risk factors for the development of esophageal cancer included a long history of achalasia, advanced age, male sex, and regular alcohol consumption. Barrett's esophagus and adenocarcinoma were extremely rare in the cohort studied.

Addressing the unmet need for a comprehensive lung cancer registry in Romania

Summary: In this perspective article, we emphasize the importance of establishing a well-organized cancer registry in Romania due to the alarmingly high prevalence and mortality rates of lung cancer. We discuss various factors contributing to this situation, including the increased use of imaging techniques during the COVID-19 pandemic and limited access to medical care leading to delayed diagnoses. We propose strategies and recommendations for epidemiological monitoring, aiming to improve patient care, promote research, and facilitate data-driven policy-making, not only for lung cancer but also for other cancer types in Romania.

Effectiveness of lymphadenectomy along the thoracic duct for radical esophagectomy

Idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis mimicking infiltrative malignancy: a case report

Summary: The treatment strategy for idiopathic retroperitoneal mass is still unclear, while distinguishing between benign and malignant is challenging. This report presents a case of idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis that mimicked malignancy, in which partial resection of the mass was performed, and the final pathological findings revealed non-tumorous tissue. The patient had a good postoperative course and remained free of recurrence after 8 years.

Impact of frailty on the long-term outcomes of elderly patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate the association between frailty evaluated using the clinical frailty scale (CFS) and outcomes in elderly patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. The results showed that frailty greatly impacted the prognosis of elderly patients with esophageal cancer, regardless of surgical or nonsurgical treatment. The CFS score could be a useful prognostic predictor.

Association between psychological distress of each points of the treatment of esophageal cancer and stress coping strategy

Summary: This study examined the association between psychological distress at each stage of esophageal cancer treatment and stress coping strategies. It found that while factors like 'fighting spirit' and 'anxious preoccupation' were strongly related to psychological distress before treatment, 'helpless/hopeless' became more strongly related to distress after esophagectomy. The study suggests that the relationship between distress and coping strategies is stronger than that with individual patient characteristics throughout the treatment process.
