Adequate period of surveillance in each stage for curatively resected gastric cancer: analyzing the time and rates of recurrence

Akikazu Yago, Shusuke Haruta, Masaki Ueno, Yosuke Hamada, Yusuke Ogawa, Yu Ohkura, Masayuki Urabe, Harushi Udagawa

Summary: This study found that the appropriate follow-up duration for resected gastric cancer may vary by stage. While the follow-up duration for stage I disease could potentially be shortened to less than 5 years, advanced gastric cancer such as stage III or IV disease has a risk of recurrence beyond 5 years and therefore requires additional follow-up.

Total Amylase Value in Drains After Gastrectomy for Predicting Postoperative Pancreatic Fistula

Toshitaka Sugawara, Hisashi Shinohara, Shusuke Haruta, Junichi Shindoh, Masaki Ueno, Harushi Udagawa

Summary: Using the total amylase value in discharge (AVD) on postoperative day (POD) 3 can predict grade II or higher severe postoperative pancreatic fistula (sPOPF) more accurately compared to the conventional definition of POPF and amylase concentration ratio.

Comparative analysis of the prognostic utility of preoperative nutritional parameters in patients with resectable esophageal carcinoma

Masayuki Urabe, Masaki Ueno, Yusuke Ogawa, Akikazu Yago, Hayato Shimoyama, Aya Honda, Yu Ohkura, Shusuke Haruta, Harushi Udagawa

Summary: The study compared the prognostic significance of preoperatively measured CONUT, PNI, transthyretin, and transferrin in patients with operable EC. The results showed that the preoperative transthyretin level was identified as an independent predictor of OS and CSS, while the other three parameters were not.

Effectiveness of lymphadenectomy along the thoracic duct for radical esophagectomy

Yu Ohkura, Masaki Ueno, Toshiro Iizuka, Harushi Udagawa

Summary: The study showed that the importance of TD resection was low in T0-2 patients due to the low metastatic rate but became evident in cases with invasion depth of T3-4. TDLN resection was at least as effective as dissection of other group-2 or -3 lymph nodes.

Importance of long-term surveillance after curative esophagectomy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

Akikazu Yago, Yu Ohkura, Masaki Ueno, Kentoku Fujisawa, Yusuke Ogawa, Hayato Shimoyama, Shusuke Haruta, Harushi Udagawa

Summary: Long-term surveillance is needed after esophagectomy for esophageal cancer due to the risk of recurrence and developing second malignancy.

Idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis mimicking infiltrative malignancy: a case report

Miho Akabane, Shusuke Haruta, Takeshi Fujii, Masayuki Urabe, Yu Ohkura, Masaki Ueno, Harushi Udagawa

Summary: The treatment strategy for idiopathic retroperitoneal mass is still unclear, while distinguishing between benign and malignant is challenging. This report presents a case of idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis that mimicked malignancy, in which partial resection of the mass was performed, and the final pathological findings revealed non-tumorous tissue. The patient had a good postoperative course and remained free of recurrence after 8 years.

Reducing the risk of postoperative pancreatic fistula in radical gastrectomy: pre-assessment with computed tomography for the diagnosis of pancreatic steatosis

Nao Kobayashi, Hisashi Shinohara, Shusuke Haruta, Harushi Udagawa, Masaki Ueno

Summary: Pancreatic steatosis is associated with the risk of postoperative pancreatic fistula after radical gastrectomy, but the risk may be reduced through preoperative CT assessment and appropriate dissection techniques.

Identification of Preoperative Fat-Free Mass Index for the Prognosis of Curatively Resected Esophageal Cancer

Akikazu Yago, Yu Ohkura, Masaki Ueno, Kentoku Fujisawa, Yusuke Ogawa, Hayato Shimoyama, Masayuki Urabe, Shusuke Haruta, Harushi Udagawa

Summary: Fat-free mass index (FFMI) is an important prognostic factor for patients undergoing esophagectomy, with no correlation with other nutritional factors.

Clinical significance of initial treatment for peritoneal lavage cytology-positive gastric cancer: outcomes according to treatment strategy

Akikazu Yago, Shusuke Haruta, Masaki Ueno, Yusuke Ogawa, Hayato Shimoyama, Yu Ohkura, Harushi Udagawa

Summary: In this study, the clinical and pathological characteristics of patients with CY1 gastric cancer were reviewed to evaluate the best treatment strategy. The results showed that there was no significant difference in outcome according to whether surgery or chemotherapy was performed first, but conversion gastrectomy may be a better treatment option.

Impact of frailty on the long-term outcomes of elderly patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

Tsuyoshi Tanaka, Koichi Suda, Masaki Ueno, Toshiro Iizuka, Ichiro Uyama, Harushi Udagawa

Summary: The objective of this study was to investigate the association between frailty evaluated using the clinical frailty scale (CFS) and outcomes in elderly patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. The results showed that frailty greatly impacted the prognosis of elderly patients with esophageal cancer, regardless of surgical or nonsurgical treatment. The CFS score could be a useful prognostic predictor.

Summary: We aimed to evaluate the feasibility of esophageal carcinoma surgery in dialyzed patients. Our study found that although surgery for esophageal carcinoma in dialyzed patients appeared feasible, it may be associated with a high risk of life-threatening complications.

Association between psychological distress of each points of the treatment of esophageal cancer and stress coping strategy

Yu Ohkura, Kanako Ichikura, Junichi Shindoh, Masaki Ueno, Harushi Udagawa, Eisuke Matsushima

Summary: This study examined the association between psychological distress at each stage of esophageal cancer treatment and stress coping strategies. It found that while factors like 'fighting spirit' and 'anxious preoccupation' were strongly related to psychological distress before treatment, 'helpless/hopeless' became more strongly related to distress after esophagectomy. The study suggests that the relationship between distress and coping strategies is stronger than that with individual patient characteristics throughout the treatment process.

Successful laparoscopic resection of gastric lymphangioma under the intraoperative guidance of indocyanine green fluorescence imaging: A case report

Ryosuke Umino, Masayuki Urabe, Yu Ohkura, Shusuke Haruta, Masaki Ueno, Harushi Udagawa

Summary: Gastric lymphangioma (GLA) is an extremely rare tumor that is typically treated with surgical resection to reduce the risk of local recurrence. Complete resection with negative margins is important in minimizing the risk of recurrence.
