The microwave-assisted digestion of dietary supplements using diluted nitric acid under oxygen pressure for subsequent indirect determination of phosphorus and sulfur by ion chromatography (IC) was proposed. Different concentrations of nitric acid (from 1 to 14.4 mol L-1) and oxygen pressures (from 5 to 20 bar) were evaluated. Dissolved organic carbon and residual acidity were used to choose the most suitable digestion condition. Using the proposed method, it was possible to digest up to 1350 mg of dietary supplements using only 5 mol L-1 HNO3 under 5 bar of oxygen pressure. Comparing to conventional digestion procedure it was possible to digest up to 60% higher sample mass using HNO3 around 30% more diluted. Recoveries ranging from 96 to 102% were obtained when recovery tests using a standard solution or a mixture with certificate reference material were carried out. The concentration of P and S indirectly determined by IC agreed with the results obtained by conventional microwave-assisted digestion using concentrated HNO3 and subsequent determination by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Laser ablation-ICP-mass spectrometry for determination of the concentrations and spatial distributions of bromine and iodine in human hair

Diogo La Rosa Novo, Thibaut Van Acker, Joke Belza, Frank Vanhaecke, Marcia Foster Mesko

Summary: Laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) was used to determine the concentrations of bromine (Br) and iodine (I) in human hair strands of individuals under synthetic thyroid hormone treatment. Matrix-matched external calibration standards were prepared using spiked hair strands. The results obtained by LA-ICP-MS were in agreement with those determined by pneumatic nebulization-ICP-MS after digestion. Subjects under treatment with synthetic thyroid hormones showed higher iodine concentrations compared to healthy subjects.

Sustainable fashion: challenges and barriers for advancing the circular economy

Simone Sehnem, Leonice Troiani, Ana Claudia Lara, Marcelo Guerreiro Crizel, Luciano Carvalho, Vinicius Picanco Rodrigues

Summary: The textile sector is recognized as one of the most polluting industries in society, and the educational sector plays a strategic role in transforming the value-added products in the textile production chain. This study aims to validate the theoretical assumptions of teaching sustainability and circular economy practices. The results show a lack of emphasis on teaching good sustainability practices in the analyzed Fashion Design courses in Brazil. Although sustainability and circular economy practices have been internalized, there is a need to further develop and prioritize practices associated with the core of the circular economy. These practices have the potential to generate innovative solutions for the sustainable fashion segment.

Interaction mechanism of nordentatin with human α-1 acid glycoprotein and human colorectal cancer HCT-116 cells

Bo Yi, Li Zhang, Haiyang Zhou

Summary: Plasma protein binding plays a crucial role in the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of therapeutic bioactive materials. In this study, the interaction of nordentatin, a member of coumarins, with human alpha-1 acid glycoprotein (AGP) was investigated, and the anticancer potency of nordentatin against human colorectal cancer cells was evaluated. The results showed that nordentatin binds to AGP through a static quenching mechanism and exhibits inhibitory effects on the growth of HCT-116 cells by increasing intracellular ROS and [Ca2+] levels and triggering apoptosis-related gene overexpression. Therefore, nordentatin could be a promising plant-based therapy for colorectal cancer.
