Reference Values for Pediatric Atrial Volumes Assessed by Steady-State Free-Precession Magnetic Resonance Imaging Using Monoplane and Biplane Area-Length Methods

Inga Voges, Amke Caliebe, Sophia Hinz, Simona Boroni Grazioli, Daniel Dominik Gabbert, Philip Wegner, Anselm Sebastian Uebing, Piers E. F. Daubeney, Dudley J. Pennell, Sylvia Krupickova

Summary: This study aimed to establish reference values for atrial volumes in pediatric patients using MRI. The study analyzed data from 155 healthy children and found that body surface area and sex were significantly associated with atrial volumes. The study provides average values for atrial volumes and establishes percentile charts.

Pediatric Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Reference Values for Biventricular Volumes Derived From Different Contouring Techniques

Inga Voges, Amke Caliebe, Sophia Hinz, Simona Boroni Grazioli, Dominik D. Gabbert, Piers E. F. Daubeney, Anselm S. Uebing, Dudley J. Pennell, Sylvia Krupickova

Summary: This study aims to provide reference values for MRI measurement of ventricular volumes in children and compares two different post-processing techniques. The results show significant correlations between ventricular volumes and factors such as height, body surface area, and weight. These reference values are important for the diagnosis, follow-up, and research of heart disease.

Myocardial strain analysis by cardiac magnetic resonance 3D feature-tracking identifies subclinical abnormalities in patients with neuromuscular disease and no overt cardiac involvement

Alessia Azzu, Alexios S. Antonopoulos, Sylvia Krupickova, Zain Mohiaddin, Batool Almogheer, Charalambos Vlachopoulos, Antonis Pantazis, Dudley J. Pennell, Raad H. Mohiaddin

Summary: By using feature-tracking cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR), subclinical cardiac involvement in patients with neuromuscular diseases (NMDs) can be detected, even before the development of overt cardiac damage. This imaging technique may serve as a useful early detection imaging biomarker for cardiac involvement.

Advanced heart failure in adult congenital heart disease: the role of renal dysfunction in management and outcomes

Kaushiga Krishnathasan, Konstantinos Dimopoulos, Neill Duncan, Piera Ricci, Alexander Kempny, Isma Rafiq, Michael A. Gatzoulis, Ee Ling Heng, Sarah Blakey, Claudia Montanaro, Sonya Babu-Narayan, Darrel P. Francis, Wei Li, Andrew Constantine

Summary: Renal dysfunction in adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) and heart failure is associated with disease progression, increased diuretic doses, and longer hospital stays. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common and triples the risk of death, transplantation, or ventricular assist device. Intensified monitoring, optimization of medical therapy, and collaborative management with renal physicians are necessary in these patients.

Anatomic, histologic, and mechanical features of the right atrium: implications for leadless atrial pacemaker implantation

Matthew O'Connor, Umberto Barbero, Daniel B. Kramer, Angela Lee, Alina Hua, Tevfik Ismail, Karen P. Mccarthy, Steven Niederer, Christopher A. Rinaldi, Vias Markides, John-Ross D. Clarke, Sonya Babu-Narayan, Siew Yen Ho, Tom Wong

Summary: This study evaluated the anatomy of the right atrium and the adjacent structures to identify the optimal and safest location for implanting an atrial leadless pacemaker. Three potential locations were identified: the base of the right atrial appendage, the anteromedial recess of the right atrial appendage apex, and the right atrial lateral wall. Based on anatomical review and 3D modeling, the base of the right atrial appendage appears to be the best compromise for implantation.

Repair of Aortic Regurgitation in Young Adults: Sooner Rather Than Later

Ana Barradas-Pires, Pablo Meras, Andrew Constantine, Giulia Costola, Teresa Segura de la Cal, Isma Rafiq, Aleksander Kempny, Wei Li, Sonya V. Babu-Narayan, J. Andreas Hoschtitzky, Michael A. Gatzoulis, Antonio Martinez Rubio, Konstantinos Dimopoulos

Summary: This study investigates the indications and outcomes of aortic valve replacement (AVR) in young adults with severe aortic regurgitation, as well as the relationship between presurgical echocardiographic parameters and postoperative left ventricular size and function. The results show that a higher presurgical left ventricular end-systolic diameter is associated with a lack of left ventricular normalization after AVR. Pre- and postoperative left ventricular dimensions and postoperative left ventricular ejection fraction predict clinical events during follow-up.

Najih, Tara Bharucha, Piers E. F. Daubeney

Summary: This study examines the impact of COVID-19 on patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) and identifies risk factors for adverse outcomes. The study finds that children with CHD have a lower risk of death and hospitalization due to COVID-19, but younger children have higher hospital admission rates. In adults, the likelihood of death increases with age and pulmonary arterial hypertension, while the likelihood of hospitalization increases with age, comorbidities, and genetic disease.

Summary: This study aimed to differentiate HFpEF patients from non-HFpEF patients and asymptomatic controls using intraventricular four-dimensional flow phase-contrast cardiovascular magnetic resonance. The results showed that CMR 4D flow derived LV direct flow and residual volume could effectively differentiate HFpEF patients from non-HFpEF patients.

Automated segmentation of long and short axis DENSE cardiovascular magnetic resonance for myocardial strain analysis using spatio-temporal convolutional neural networks

Hugo Barbaroux, Karl P. Kunze, Radhouene Neji, Muhummad Sohaib Nazir, Dudley J. Pennell, Sonia Nielles-Vallespin, Andrew D. Scott, Alistair A. Young

Summary: This study developed a spatio-temporal deep learning model for segmentation of the left-ventricular myocardium in Cine DENSE images. The model showed consistent performance and excellent agreement with manual segmentation for strain extraction. Deep learning can facilitate the analysis of DENSE data, bringing it closer to clinical routine.

Short-term outcome of late gadolinium changes detected on cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging following coronavirus disease 2019 Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine-related myocarditis in adolescents

Sylvia Krupickova, Inga Voges, Raad Mohiaddin, Carles Bautista, Wei Li, Jethro Herberg, Piers E. F. Daubeney, Dudley J. Pennell, Alain Fraisse

Summary: This study investigates the acute inflammation in pediatric patients following Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccination using cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging. Residual lesions with persistent areas of myocardial fibrosis and ongoing myocardial oedema were observed, highlighting the importance of recognizing and investigating the outcome of post-vaccination myocarditis.
