OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of dental pain on daily performances among five-year-old Brazilian children. METHODS: The study used data of 7,280 five-year-old children participating in the 2010 Brazilian Oral Health Survey (SBBrasil 2010 Project). Children were clinically examined and their parents or carers were interviewed at their homes. The outcome was the prevalence of the oral impacts on daily performance, and the explanatory variable was dental pain in the last six months. Other independent variables were children's gender and skin color/race, family income, household overcrowding, and caries experience (dmft). Rao-Scott test and Poisson regression for complex samples were carried out. RESULTS: The prevalence of impacts on daily performances was 26.1% (95% CI 22.3-30.2). Significant associations were found between the outcome and pain, caries experience, and sociodemographic variables. After adjusting for the independent variables, only pain and caries remained significant. Impacts on daily performances were more frequent among children with pain (PR = 1.14, 95% CI 1.06-1.23) compared to those without pain. Children with low dmft (PR = 1.90, 95% CI 1.39-2.60) and those with high dmft (PR = 3.53, 95% CI 2.78-4.49) had a higher prevalence of impact than those with no caries experience. CONCLUSIONS: Dental pain and caries had strong negative impacts on the five-year-old children's daily performances regardless of their demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. Dental pain in adult and elderly homeless people: Prevalence, associated factors, and impact on the quality of life in Midwest Brazil

Maria do Carmo Matias Freire, Juliana Aparecida de Campos Lawder, Joao Batista de Souza, Marcos Andre de Matos

Summary: The study found that half of the homeless population in Brazil experienced dental pain in the past 6 months, with most reporting severe pain and self-management techniques. Visiting a dentist and perceived need for dental treatment were associated with the occurrence of pain. 80.1% of individuals experienced an impact on daily performance due to dental pain, primarily manifesting as difficulty eating and feeling reluctant to smile or speak.

Tamires Gomes de Oliveira Machado, Juliana Aparecida Campos Lawder, Joao Batista de Souza, Marcos Andre de Matos, Maria do Carmo Matias Freire

Summary: This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the periodontal status and its association with sociodemographic factors, oral-health related behaviors, and drug use among temporarily institutionalized homeless adults. The prevalence of periodontal disease was found to be high, with dental calculus being the most frequent condition. The use of dental floss was associated with a lower prevalence of bleeding.

Quality of education and adolescents' oral health-related behaviours: a multilevel analysis

N. G. Nery, L. M. R. Jordao, M. H. N. G. de Abreu, M. C. M. Freire

Summary: The quality of education in cities is associated with unhealthy oral health-related behaviors among adolescent students, particularly low toothbrushing frequency and high sweets consumption. Therefore, schools need to implement appropriate health promotion strategies and provide high-quality education.

Structural validity of the Brazilian version of the Sense of Coherence scale (SOC-13) in oral health research: exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis

Roger Keller Celeste, Giovana Pereira Scalco, Claides Abegg, Marcos Pascoal Pattussi, Helenita Correa Ely, Rosane Silvia Davoglio, Maria do Carmo Matias Freire

Summary: The results suggest that the SOC-13 scale requires further adjustments. The one-factor model with nine items showed a good statistical fit, but the implications of excluding items should be further investigated, taking into account the scale's content validity, cross-cultural adaptation, and theoretical background.

Nociception associated with pain/distress in young children sedated for dental treatment: a clinical study with objective and subjective measures

D. A. Baroni, P. Correa-Faria, A. A. Anabuki, L. G. Abreu, L. R. Costa

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between pain/distress levels in sedated children undergoing minimally invasive dental treatment and patient characteristics, sedation type, nociception, and pain intensity reported by parents. The results showed that pain/distress levels were associated with nociception, sedation level, and pain intensity.

Association Between Sense of Coherence and Tobacco Use Among Brazilian Adolescent Students

Leonardo Essado Rios, Maria do Carmo Matias Freire

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the association between tobacco use and SOC among Brazilian adolescent students. Results showed that higher SOC scores were associated with lower rates of smoking experimentation, current use, daily use, and experimentation with hookah and/or other tobacco products. These associations remained after controlling for sociodemographic and/or social-environmental factors.
