Ultrasound imaging (US) is an accurate and reliable method used to diagnose tendinopathy. This systematic review was aimed at identifying common criteria and parameters used to diagnose tendinopathy, the methodological quality of studies and the predictive value of US. Nineteen studies met the inclusion criteria, with the Achilles, quadriceps and patella tendons being investigated. Overall, there was significant heterogeneity between the criteria used to diagnose tendinopathy utilising US. The methodological quality of included studies was good. Additionally, meta-analysis revealed that US-identified abnormalities were predictive of future symptoms, and classification of tendinopathy using three US defined parameters indicated a higher relative risk of developing clinical tendinopathy compared with the use of two US-defined parameters. Further research into the development of a standardised US criterion that incorporates both clinical and US findings is required to allow for greater consistency in the diagnosis of tendinopathy. Validity of the Polar Vantage M watch when measuring heart rate at different exercise intensities

Tricia Shumate, Magdalen Link, James Furness, Kevin Kemp-Smith, Vini Simas, Mike Climstein

Summary: The study found a strong correlation between the PVM watch and ECG throughout the Bruce Protocol, but the level of agreement became widely dispersed with increased exercise intensities. Due to the large differences between ECG and PVM watch, it is not recommended to use this device in clinical populations where accurate heart rate measurements are essential for patient safety; however, it may be used in environments where less accurate heart rate is not critical for individual safety during exercise.

Excursion of the median nerve during a contra -lateral cervical lateral glide movement in people with and without cervical radiculopathy

Erik Thoomes, Richard Ellis, Andrew Dilley, Deborah Falla, Marloes Thoomes-de Graaf

Summary: The segmental, contra-lateral cervical lateral glide (CCLG) mobilization technique is effective for patients with cervical radiculopathy (CR). The study found a significant difference in median nerve excursion between patients with CR and asymptomatic volunteers at baseline, but this difference disappeared after 3 months of conservative physiotherapy management. Improvement in nerve excursion correlated with improvement in clinical signs and symptoms.

Exercises, Tubigrip and taping: can they reduce rectus abdominis diastasis measured three weeks post-partum?

Jill Depledge, Peter McNair, Richard Ellis

Summary: Rectus abdominis diastasis can be reduced through specific exercises, with trunk curlup exercise being the most effective. Wearing Tubigrip can reduce inter-rectus distance at rest, but additional support during exercise does not enhance the effects of the exercises.

The clinical diagnosis of Achilles tendinopathy: a scoping review

Wesley Matthews, Richard Ellis, James Furness, Wayne A. Hing

Summary: There is significant variation in the methodology and outcome measures used to diagnose Achilles tendinopathy. Subjective measures include self-reported location of pain and pain with tendon loading activities, while objective measures consist of tendon palpation and tendon pain during loading activities. The VISA-A questionnaire is commonly used as an outcome measure for monitoring Achilles tendinopathy.

Traumatic surfing injuries in New Zealand: a descriptive epidemiology study

James Furness, Katherine McArthur, Debbie Remnant, Darcy Jorgensen, Catherine J. Bacon, Robert W. Moran, Wayne Hing, Mike Climstein

Summary: The survey conducted in New Zealand found that out of the approximately 315,000 surfers, one third of recreational surfers experienced a major traumatic injury in the previous 12 months. Competitive surfers and those capable of performing aerial maneuvers were at increased risk of injuries, with shoulder injuries having the longest duration. Competitive surfers were more likely to sustain neck, shoulder, lower back, and knee injuries compared to recreational surfers.

Effect of personal activity intelligence (PAI) monitoring in the maintenance phase of cardiac rehabilitation: a mixed methods evaluation

Amanda L. Hannan, Wayne Hing, Jeff S. Coombes, Suzanne Gough, Mike Climstein, Geoff Adsett, Rohan Jayasinghe, James Furness

Summary: This study showed that monitoring PAI via a WPAM increased physical activity levels and motivation in participants in the maintenance phase of cardiac rehabilitation. Most participants expressed willingness to continue using PAI long-term, although some had concerns related to technical issues and device functionality. Improvements in technology and aesthetics may enhance the long-term sustainability of using PAI for physical activity monitoring in individuals with cardiac disease.

Neurodynamics: is tension contentious?

Richard Ellis, Giacomo Carta, Ricardo J. Andrade, Michel W. Coppieters

Summary: This article provides a balanced evidence-informed view on the effects of optimal tensile loading on peripheral nerves and the use of tensioning techniques. While beneficial effects include neuronal cell differentiation, nerve regeneration and remyelination, there are negative effects such as excessive tensile forces aggravating clinical symptoms in patients. The nervous system is both robust and delicate, and the use of tensioning techniques should be carefully considered to achieve optimal therapeutic outcomes.

Summary: This study proposes a straightforward simulation approach based on superposed Wave (s-Wave) to accelerate photoacoustic simulation. By manipulating the phase and amplitude of sensor data, the computation time is significantly reduced. The results show that s-Wave exhibits a speed improvement >2000 times compared with k-Wave in a sparse system configuration, and in terms of optimization-based image reconstruction, the reconstruction time is reduced by approximately 50 times.
