Summary: This study aimed to describe the anthropometric status of school children with ADHD, comparing their age and clinical presentation with control children. The results showed that preschoolers with hyperactive-impulsive ADHD were taller, while elementary school children with combined ADHD were shorter and smaller. Medication may affect the height of children with inattentive presentation. Anthropometric and dietary monitoring should be recommended to parents of children with ADHD.

Summary: Aging poses a major challenge to the development and growth of countries worldwide. This study identified subgroups of the elderly based on their quality of life, sleep quality, and common mental disorders, and examined the influence of demographic characteristics on subgroup membership. Three subgroups were identified: healthy, anxious with poor sleep quality, and unhealthy. Being female, living in urban areas, and illiteracy were found to increase the odds of belonging to certain subgroups. These results highlight the co-occurrence of health problems among a significant portion of the elderly population.

Summary: Evidence suggests a link between maternal obesity during pregnancy and offspring attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. This study aimed to examine the association between maternal pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and child hyperactivity-inattention symptoms (HIS) at different ages. The results showed that maternal pre-pregnancy obesity was associated with increased likelihood of a high HIS trajectory in children from 3 to 8 years old, while pre-pregnancy overweight was not significantly associated.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness and acceptability of various nonpharmacological therapies in improving attention deficit in ADHD patients. The findings suggest that exercise intervention is the most stable in improving attention deficit, while meditation and cognitive therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and computer training can also be effective complementary tools.

Summary: Hyperfocus and flow are intense concentration experiences associated with reduced perception of irrelevant stimuli and improved task performance. Hyperfocus has been historically seen as a symptom of ADHD, autism, or schizophrenia, while flow is regarded as an enjoyable experience in positive psychology. Recent studies suggest that hyperfocus and flow may be the same phenomenon viewed from different perspectives.

Summary: Growing evidence suggests that ADHD is associated with poor somatic health in adulthood, but the mechanisms underlying these associations are poorly understood. This study found that ADHD polygenic risk scores (PRS) are associated with multiple somatic health problems in mid-to-late life, particularly in the cardiometabolic domain. These associations were observed in the general population and appear to be partially mediated by life-course risk factors.

Summary: This study provides a systematic review and analysis of the effectiveness of electroencephalogram-based neurofeedback (EEG-NF) in treating the core symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adolescents/adults. The results suggest that EEG-NF can effectively improve inattention symptoms, but its effectiveness in reducing hyperactivity/impulsivity remains inconclusive.

Summary: This study examined the diagnostic indicators, clinical characteristics, and functional impairment associated with adult ADHD using electronic medical records and self-report measures. The results showed a significant difference in prevalence of ADHD between self-report screening and medical records. ADHD was found to contribute to functional impairment even when controlling for other psychiatric comorbidities.

Summary: ADHD is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in children and adolescents, and timely interventions are a priority. However, current research reports and reviews on interventions for ADHD often lack consistency and are difficult to interpret. Clinicians need to consider methodological issues and gaps in the evidence when evaluating treatments for ADHD.

Summary: This study investigated the efficacy of methylphenidate in reducing ADHD symptoms in young adult prisoners. The results showed that methylphenidate treatment did not significantly improve ADHD symptoms, indicating that routine use of this medication in this population is not supported. Further research is needed to evaluate the effects of higher dosing, treatment adherence, multi-modal treatments, and preventative interventions in the community.

Summary: This study aims to examine the association between physical activity, sedentary time, and physical fitness with the shapes of subcortical brain structures in children with overweight/obesity. The results showed that physical activity was related to the expansion of certain brain structures, while sedentary time was related to the contraction of certain brain structures. Physical fitness measures, such as cardiorespiratory health and upper-limb strength, were also associated with the expansion or contraction of specific brain structures. These brain structural changes were then related to intelligence.

Summary: This study investigated the association between anthropometric neonatal data (birth length and birth weight) and breastfeeding practices (exclusive and any breastfeeding) with hippocampal functional connectivity and academic performance in children with overweight/obesity. The results showed that birth weight was positively associated with connectivity between the hippocampus and certain brain regions, while breastfeeding was negatively associated with connectivity between the hippocampus and other brain regions. However, there was no significant relationship between these connectivity outcomes and academic abilities.

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate psychopathology, family stress, and coping strategies in families of pediatric solid organ transplantation (SOT) recipients compared to families of healthy children and adolescents. The results showed that families of SOT recipients exhibited higher levels of anxiety, stress related to childcare and parent-child interaction, and used more avoidance and religious coping strategies, while using fewer social support coping strategies. The study highlights the importance of providing psychological interventions and support for caregivers of SOT patients.

Summary: This study examined the predictive and etiological patterns between ADHD diagnosis and cognitive performance over time. The findings showed a reciprocal association between ADHD and IQ, with ADHD predicting lower working memory performance at follow-up. Stable etiological influences were also identified in the association between ADHD and cognitive variables over time. Further research is needed to investigate whether early interventions can mitigate the negative impact on learning.

However, different patterns of discriminative capacity were observed between the three groups for emotional dysregulation and impulsivity/recklessness factors.

Summary: This longitudinal study analyzed changes in physical activity, sedentary behavior, sleep, anxiety, mood, and perceived health in Spanish university students during and one year after the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed decreased physical activity, increased sedentary time, and deterioration in sleep and perceived health during confinement. Most parameters improved one year later, but participants still reported lower physical activity, more sedentary time, and deterioration in sleep and perceived health compared to before confinement. Higher levels of physical activity and lower sedentary time were associated with better sleep and mental health during the pandemic.
