Bacteria live in communities where strains compete with each other by deploying an arsenal of antibacterial toxins. While the past decade revealed the vast array of antibacterial toxins secreted by Gram-negative bacteria, several recent studies have begun to uncover the ability of Gram-positive bacteria to battle with their own weapons.

Summary: This study reported a fatal case of European bat lyssavirus type 1a infection in a 59-year-old patient who died from encephalitis. The virus was detected in autopsy samples using NGS technology, highlighting the risk of virus transmission from bat exposure, and emphasizing that individuals not vaccinated against rabies should avoid direct interactions with bats.

Lung-Adapted Staphylococcus aureus Isolates With Dysfunctional Agr System Trigger a Proinflammatory Response

Summary: This study investigates the role of persistent Staphylococcus aureus clones in cystic fibrosis (CF) disease. The results suggest that the lung-adapted variants of S. aureus may promote inflammation and contribute to the progression of chronic lung disease.

Decrease of hospital- and community-acquired bloodstream infections due to Streptococcus pneumoniae and Streptococcus pyogenes during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic: A time-series analysis in Paris region

Rishma Amarsy, Sandra Fournier, David Trystram, Catherine Monteil, Xavier Raynaud, Vincent Jarlier, Jerome Robert

Summary: The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on bloodstream infections due to Streptococcus pneumoniae and Streptococcus pyogenes was assessed in 25 university hospitals in Paris. The incidence rates of BSIs, which had been stable in 2018 and 2019, decreased for the two pathogens during the two lockdown periods in 2020. Containment policies such as social distancing, masking, and hand hygiene strengthening in community and hospital settings are likely to reduce BSIs caused by these pathogens.

Summary: Persistent hepatitis is a common late-onset posttreatment complication in transplanted SCID patients. This study found that it is associated with chronic enteric viral infection and immune dysregulation, and identified risk factors such as myeloablation absence and defective B-cell function. Treatment options such as retransplantation or gene therapy can lead to remission of hepatitis.

Summary: This study reports five pediatric cases of renal arcuate vein thrombosis (RAVT), a rare condition causing acute kidney injury (AKI) in young adults. The investigation suggests that NSAIDs use and SARS-CoV-2 infection may be crucial contributing factors to the development of renal thrombosis.

Summary: Using metagenomic next-generation sequencing and reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction, we detected the Aichi virus genome in tissues of patients with primary immune deficiency and unexplained multiorgan inflammatory involvement. We showed evidence supporting the causality of Aichi virus in these cases.

Summary: This study investigated the virulence and antimicrobial resistance-associated genes and within-host evolution polymorphisms in 14 persistent clones of Staphylococcus aureus from chronically infected children with cystic fibrosis. The study identified convergent mutations in genes involved in intracellular invasion and persistence, which play an important role in the long-term persistence ability of S. aureus.

Summary: In March 2022, a 61-year-old woman in France who had received a heart-lung transplant was diagnosed with chronic hepatitis characterized by increased liver enzymes. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing revealed the presence of an unknown circovirus, named human circovirus 1 (HCirV-1), in a liver biopsy sample. The viral genome was undetectable in blood samples from 2017-2019, but became detectable in September 2020 and reached high titers in January 2022, concurrent with liver damage indicated by elevated liver enzyme levels and high viral copies in the liver and blood.
