Summary: This study aims to assess the impact of patient-specific implants (PSI) versus conventional osteosynthesis (non-PSI) on osseous union following fibula-free flap (FFF) jaw reconstruction and identify risk factors for incomplete osseous union. The study found that the rate of incomplete bony fusion was significantly higher in the PSI group. The type of osteosynthesis and adjuvant radiotherapy were identified as independent risk factors for incomplete osseous union.

Summary: This study compared the application of auxiliary techniques in mandibular reconstruction. The use of adjustable resection/reconstruction aids and CAD/CAM assistance showed no significant differences in terms of feasibility, accuracy, and operative parameters. However, the adjustable aids had advantages of less preoperative planning time and lower costs per case, which may be more favorable for mandibular angle-to-angle reconstruction.

Summary: This study compares the accuracy of patient-specific reconstructive plates (PSRP) and manually contoured plates in mandibular reconstruction. The results show significant differences between reconstructions performed with PSRP and manually contoured plates in plate-mandible distance, inter-fibular segment gap, mandible-fibula gap, reconstruction deviation, mandibular angle width difference, and reconstruction time. A lower plate-mandible distance is associated with decreased plate extrusion rates.

Summary: This study evaluated and compared the aesthetic outcome and surgical efficiency of free fibular flap (FFF) with and without CAD/CAM customized osteotomy guide (COG) for reconstructing mandibular defects after ablative surgery. The results showed that the use of COG improved aesthetic outcomes and surgical efficiency, making it a more reliable and valuable approach compared to traditional reconstruction methods without COG.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the impact and cost-effectiveness of virtual surgical planning on fibula free flap mandibular reconstruction. The results show that while there was no significant difference in peri- and postoperative data between planned and non-planned surgeries, planned surgeries had a higher rate of centred occlusion. Further studies are needed to evaluate the long-term benefits of virtual surgical planning.

Summary: This paper provides a comprehensive summary of the clinical applications of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) in maxillofacial surgery, and reviews the experience using an in-house rapid prototyping technique. The study focused on reconstructive surgery, traumatology, and COVID-19 masks, showing that the low cost and efficiency make this method applicable to a large number of cases for both ordinary and extraordinary activities.

Summary: Fibula free flaps (FFF) are commonly used in facial surgery, but there are still clinical and translational challenges. Improving patient outcomes following FFF requires considering minimal donor site morbidity, adequate bone length, and dual blood supply. Further research is needed on preoperative virtual surgical planning and artificial intelligence tools, as well as intraoperative individualized surgical templates and bioprinted prostheses.

Summary: The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of condylar reconstruction using fibula free flap (FFF) with conventional freehand and CAD/CAM techniques. Fifteen patients who underwent FFF condylar reconstruction were evaluated using pre- and postoperative imaging scans and clinical function assessment. The results showed that both freehand and CAD/CAM techniques had similar outcomes in terms of pain reduction and mouth opening, but there was a deviation of the jaw movement to the side of surgery. The CAD/CAM technique facilitated surgery and improved the fit of the neocondyle in the fossa.

Summary: This study evaluated the primary fixation stability of CAD/CAM fixators and compared the performance of different types of fixators under biomechanical conditions. The results showed that CAD/CAM miniplates had higher mechanical strains, while CAD/CAM reconstruction plates resulted in higher strains. However, the stresses in the fixation systems were below the material yield stress, indicating that material failure would not be expected.

Summary: The quality of information about temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJD) on YouTube is generally poor, with a modest general quality of the videos. Healthcare systems and professionals should be prepared to correct misinformation and build trusting relationships with patients based on quality counseling. Similarly, academic institutions should produce quality content to guide TMJD patients towards a correct diagnostic-therapeutic process.

Summary: This retrospective study evaluated the efficacy and safety of specific local nasal immunotherapy (LNIT) in patients with allergic rhinitis. The results showed significant clinical efficacy of LNIT in patients allergic to mites and pollens, but no difference in mucociliary clearance time. In conclusion, specific LNIT is a valid alternative to subcutaneous and sublingual administration, providing effective and safe treatment with fewer systemic reactions.

Summary: This study describes a new technique for harvesting cartilage grafts in reconstructive surgery with a small incision size of less than 1.5 cm. The technique was successfully applied to 36 patients without major complications such as infections or chest wall deformities. The Vancouver Scar Scale was used to evaluate postoperative scarring, and the results showed minimal scarring at both 1 week and 6 months after the procedure. This minimally invasive method provides a valid and effective approach for cartilage grafts.
