Summary: In this paper, a technique called porosity-modulus mapping (PMM) is introduced to characterize the nanomechanical properties of cement composites with improved characterization of the interfaces. The PMM method has been applied to analyze the nanomodification of nano-reinforced cement composites. The results show that this method can characterize the material at the nanoscale with excellent characterization of the interfacial transition zones (ITZs) and predict the engineering modulus.

Summary: In this research, an amorphous coating of Fe-Cr-Mo-C-B-Y metallic glass was developed on a steel substrate through laser surface treatment. The microstructure and phase distribution of the coating were analyzed, as well as its mechanical properties such as microhardness and abrasion resistance. The study found that the coating thickness, microstructure, and mechanical properties were influenced by the laser parameters used during the process.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the nanomechanical, adhesion, and corrosion resistance of hydroxyapatite (HAP) coatings deposited on Ti6Al4V alloy using the electrodeposition process. The effects of hydrogen peroxide concentration and heat treatment on the coatings were studied. Results showed that with 9% H2O2 and after heat treatment, the HAP film exhibited a compact and homogeneous microstructure, with improved nanomechanical properties, adhesion strength, and corrosion resistance.

Summary: Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is a filler that improves the mechanical properties of polymer composites, particularly polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). A pre-processing technique is used to produce an additive-free aqueous dispersion of h-BN, which is then used to prepare uniformly dispersed composites. The addition of h-BN significantly enhances the elastic properties of the composite materials, and the strong interfacial interaction between h-BN and PVA ensures efficient mechanical stress transfer at the interface.

Summary: This research investigates the deposition of various hard Ti-based coatings on steel substrates using the physical vapor deposition (PVD) technique. The graded coatings were evaluated through phase composition analysis and spectroscopy. Microstructural characterization was conducted using XPS, SEM, and TEM. The findings suggest that integrating a Ti interlayer with subsequent TiN/TICN layers can result in enhanced mechanical and tribological behavior. The elastic modulus, hardness, and yield strength of the coatings were determined by nanoindentation. The microscopic performance of the coatings was analyzed using load-displacement curves obtained from both nanoindentation and nano scratch tests.

Summary: This study focuses on investigating the properties of epoxy coatings with different percentages of ZnO nanoparticles, including mechanical, nanomechanical, thermal, and electrochemical properties. The results show that adding nanoparticles at lower loadings can improve the coating properties, but at higher loadings, agglomeration occurs, adversely affecting the coating properties.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial resolution of nanoindentation mapping on metallic glasses (MGs) using a Berkovich indenter. The results show that a maximum spatial resolution of approximately 200 nm can be achieved with a normalized indentation spacing of 10. These findings are important for the study of heterogeneity in MGs using nanoindentation.

Summary: The structural relaxation and nanomechanical behaviors of La65Al14Ni5Co5Cu9.2Ag1.8 bulk metallic glass during annealing were investigated, with enthalpy release deduced by annealing near glass transition. The recovery of enthalpy increased with annealing temperature and reached maximum at 403 K, but decreased after annealing in the supercooled liquid region. The relaxation behaviors of La-based BMG were well described by the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts function, with hardness, Young's modulus, and serrated flow sensitive to structural relaxation.

Summary: This paper systematically compares three commonly used micromechanical mapping methods and discusses their theoretical background and connections. Elastic characterization of shale was conducted on a shale sample from the Ordos Basin. The effects of scanning frequency, peak force frequency, and force setpoint were analyzed. The study also discussed the limitations of the data processing method and test methods. This work contributes to improved understanding and selection of micromechanical mapping methods and experimental design of elastic characterization of shale.

Summary: The modified precursor infiltration pyrolysis (PIP) method was used to prepare an integrated doped ceramic matrix and coating with SiC nanowires, resulting in a composite with improved bonding strength and ablation resistance. The integration of the coating and matrix enabled the formation of a continuous oxide layer in the ablation process, effectively blocking oxygen and heat. This systematic improvement led to significantly lower mass and linear ablation rates compared to traditional composites.

Summary: In this study, the performance of C3N and graphene under out-of-plane loading is compared. It is found that C3N exhibits greater hysteresis and higher penetration force compared to graphene, and is 2.72% harder in the indentation test. Voronoi analysis shows that the relationship between the surface atoms and the substrate atoms is different after coating with nanomaterials.

Summary: This study attempted to produce graphene reinforced Inconel 718 composite by combining accumulative roll bonding (ARB) and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). The phase composition analysis and wear behavior of the composite were investigated, and the microstructure characterization was studied using various techniques. The results showed that integrating ARB with GTAW can result in a superalloy-based composite with enhanced tribological behavior due to the formation of carbides and carbonitrides from graphene nanoplates (GNPs). The elastic modulus and hardness obtained from nanoindentation were used to assess the yield stress and flow behavior parameters.

Summary: A novel method for preparing a coating on C/C composite is discussed in this study. By adding SiC nanowires, the method achieves the integration between the coating and the matrix, improving the adhesion of the coating. The results demonstrate that the material with a ZrC/SiC precursor ratio of 5:1 exhibits the highest resistance to ablation.

Summary: A novel method combining static indentation and acoustic emission signal detection was used in this study to evaluate the wear and adhesion of coatings. A special measuring device equipped with an acoustic emission measuring gauge was developed for this purpose, allowing the investigation of crack formation and adhesion of coatings deposited on different substrates using acoustic emissions data. The results obtained from both the existing and novel methods were compared and evaluated.

Summary: The mechanical study of a microelectronic-dedicated stack with Si3N4 and AlSiCu layers was conducted using nanoindentation and Finite Element Method (FEM) modeling. The damage process and cracking patterns were analyzed, with a novel procedure for identifying the Si3N4 layer tensile strength presented. The results were validated through observation of structure cross-sections with a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) after Focused Ion Beam (FIB) milling. The proposed identification procedure can be adapted to other systems with similar multiple-cracking patterns under indentation.
