Summary: The study aimed to investigate the incidence, sites, main pathogens, and risk factors for infectious complications in adult acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients receiving venetoclax combined with decitabine or azacitidine. The results showed that compared to conventional chemotherapy, venetoclax combined with decitabine or azacitidine significantly reduced the incidence of infectious complications. High leukemia burden and fever were identified as independent risk factors for infections.

Summary: This retrospective analysis studied risk factors for postendoscopic bacteremia in a tertiary center in Israel. Neutropenia, low albumin level, male gender, older age, preprocedure fever, and admitting department were associated with increased risk for bacteremia. However, the risk of postendoscopic bacteremia in neutropenic patients was not significantly different compared to other procedures or the background risk among neutropenic patients.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of short versus prolonged antibiotic treatment for bloodstream infection (BSI) in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients. The findings suggest that short-term antibiotic treatment is as effective as prolonged treatment, with very few relapses within 30 days of discontinuation.

Summary: In pediatric patients with febrile neutropenia due to hematological malignancies, sVCAM-1 and VEGF levels, when combined with CRP and PCT, could predict gram-negative bacteremia. Serum endothelial adhesion molecules, excluding sVCAM-1, alone cannot predict bacteremia and ICU admission; however, they may be associated with clinical outcomes when used in conjunction with PCT and CRP.

Summary: This study compared the clinical characteristics and outcomes of bloodstream infections in cancer patients with febrile neutropenia with and without HIV infection, revealing that HIV infection affects the epidemiology and clinical presentation of patients, leading to higher mortality. However, HIV infection itself was not associated with mortality.

Summary: Febrile neutropenia is a common complication of chemotherapy in oncological children, emphasizing the importance of early detection and rapid intervention in improving outcomes. Despite efforts to identify specific factors aiding in infection detection and microbiological identification, insufficient evidence exists to establish the role of these risk factors in clinical practice. Further research is needed to develop validated predictive scores and algorithms for the management of febrile neutropenia in pediatric patients.

Summary: Neutropenia is common after kidney transplant, and febrile neutropenia episodes (FNE) are associated with inferior long-term outcomes. FNE often accompany infections and contribute to persistent reduction in graft function.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether the D-index is a useful predictor for the onset of febrile neutropenia (FN) in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients receiving chemotherapy. A total of 51 AML patients were analyzed, and it was found that the presence of diabetes mellitus and a D-index greater than 710 on day 11 were contributing factors to the occurrence of FN. The odds ratio for predicting the onset of FN was 2.1.

Summary: This study found that febrile neutropenia (FN) during lung cancer chemotherapy can lead to serious complications and delays or discontinuation of chemotherapy. The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) and clinical index of stable febrile neutropenia (CISNE) scores are useful in identifying patients who are unable to resume chemotherapy as scheduled after FN.

Summary: Venetoclax, a potent BCL-2 inhibitor, has shown significant efficacy in AML treatment in preclinical and clinical trials. However, further research is needed to determine the optimal treatment strategies and identify biomarkers for predicting treatment response.

Summary: The combination of single-sampling and weight-adapted blood culture strategies showed benefits in detecting bloodstream infections during febrile neutropenia. Bacteremia detection was improved in this preliminary study, indicating the need for further evaluation in the overall pediatric population. The new strategy was well tolerated and could potentially lead to reconsideration of volume limitations in children suspected of bloodstream infections.

Summary: Based on current evidence, ambulatory management of febrile neutropenia is safe, more cost-effective than inpatient care, and capable of improving quality of life in oncological patients with this complication. Ambulatory care seems to be an effective alternative to hospitalization in these patients.

Summary: This report presents the results of a multicenter observational study on acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in Japan. The study registered 3728 AML patients, with 42% of them being younger than 65 years old and the male-to-female ratio being 1.57:1. The median follow-up time was 1807 days, and the estimated 5-year overall survival rate for AML patients was 31.1%. The study also found that trial-enrolled patients had a higher overall survival rate compared to non-enrolled patients, and women had a higher overall survival rate than men.

Summary: In pediatric patients, risk factors for recurrent fever after discontinuation of antibiotics in a neutropenic state include incomplete remission of original disease, high white blood cell count, neutrophil count, and C reactive protein levels at start of antibiotics. Additionally, lower neutrophil count at discontinuation of antibiotics and other factors were also identified as risk factors.
