Metastatic cancers during pregnancy have historically been associated with dismal outcomes, with greater rates of tumor progression in part because of diminished treatment alternatives. Immunotherapy with T-cell checkpoint inhibitors has significantly impacted the survival of several metastatic tumors. However, given their mechanism of action, immune-related adverse events can occur, especially with combined immunotherapy treatments. During pregnancy, checkpoint pathways have a major role, providing immune tolerance to the fetal allograft. Furthermore, evidence suggests that inhibition of this pathway may be associated with an increased risk of miscarriage. We describe, to our knowledge, the first case reported in the literature of a patient 7 weeks pregnant, diagnosed with metastatic melanoma and treated with nivolumab plus ipilimumab. We also present the associated immune-related side effects and their treatment, as well as the oncologic results that lead to favorable pregnancy outcome. (C) 2018 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Summary: The study found causal effects of gallstone disease on GBC risk in Chileans and Europeans, and also a causal effect of BMI on GBC risk in Chileans, while higher CRP concentrations increased GBC risk in Europeans. Furthermore, BMI showed a causal effect on gallstone risk in Europeans, which was itself causally linked to GBC risk.

Assemblages of myxomycetes associated with three different substrates affected by forest wildfires

Steven L. Stephenson, Nazrana Payal, Gurpreet Kaur, Carlos Rojas

Summary: This study assessed the impact of wildfires on the recovery of myxomycetes associated with different substrates. Samples from areas with lower fire intensity showed more myxomycetes and faster recovery on bark and twigs. Myxomycetes are resilient to wildfires and recover differently depending on the substrate.

Cinematic CT as a valuable protocol for severe ECAC

Summary: Expiratory central airway collapse (ECAC) is a challenging pathology to diagnose. Current invasive diagnosis methods have limited reproducibility, and non-invasive techniques are not as effective. Research suggests that dynamic forced expiratory CT may serve as a feasible alternative.

Summary: This study presents a high-coverage WGS dataset of elderly Brazilians from a mixed population, providing valuable data on non-European and mixed populations. The results demonstrate that WGS can identify previously undescribed variants and genomic segments, as well as alleles from HLA genes. The study also shows the clinical usefulness of reclassifying and validating variants associated with dominantly-inherited Mendelian disorders. Furthermore, the findings highlight the improved potential of whole-genome and HLA imputation using WGS data.

Relationship Between Endothelial and Angiogenesis Biomarkers Envisage Mortality in a Prospective Cohort of COVID-19 Patients Requiring Respiratory Support

Felipe Maldonado, Diego Morales, Catalina Diaz-Papapietro, Catalina Valdes, Christian Fernandez, Nicolas Valls, Marioli Lazo, Carolina Espinoza, Roberto Gonzalez, Rodrigo Gutierrez, Alvaro Jara, Carlos Romero, Oscar Cerda, Monica Caceres

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate whether early detection of endothelial and angiogenic biomarkers predicts mortality and major cardiovascular events in COVID-19 patients. The results showed that certain biomarkers had significantly increased concentrations in COVID-19 patients and could predict mortality. Furthermore, serum samples from COVID-19 patients enhanced the migration ability of endothelial cells.

Political Obligation as Prudential Obligation in the Political Philosophical Thought of Thomas Hobbes

Carlos Alberto Jaramillo Rojas

Summary: In Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes explains the obligation to obey the state as a rational or prudential necessity based on his philosophical and epistemological theories of human nature. According to Hobbes, obedience to the sovereign is driven by the need to preserve life motion, and transcendental values are not considered as foundational to moral obligations in his theory.
