The advantage of alternate partial root-zone drip irrigation combined with ratio of basal N fertilizer to top dressing N fertilizer via drip fertigation on tomato yield, quality and water use remains unresolved. This study has investigated the influences of three drip irrigation methods, including conventional drip irrigation (CDI), alternate partial root-zone drip irrigation (ADI), and fixed partial root-zone drip irrigation (FDI), and five N treatments (N0-100: 100% of N fertilizers as topdressing, N10-90: 10% as basal fertilizer and 90% as topdressing, N20-80: 20% as basal fertilizer and 80% as topdressing, N30-70: 30% as basal fertilizer and 70% as topdressing, and N40-60: 40% as basal fertilizer and 60% as topdressing. All treatments received the same N rate) on tomato yield, quality and water use efficiency, and then the comprehensive quality and comprehensive benefits of different treatments were respectively evaluated by principal component analysis and TOPSIS (technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution) to obtain optimal water and N supply mode. Compared to CDI, ADI decreased tomato yield slightly, but increased water use efficiency (WUE) by 7.8%, while FDI reduced tomato yield and maintained WUE. In comparison of the five N treatments, N30-70 had higher tomato yield and lycopene and vitamin C contents and sugar/acid ratio in fruits, but it had lower organic acid content in fruits. Among all treatments, ADI-N30-70 had the optimal tomato comprehensive quality and comprehensive benefit. Therefore, ADI-N30-70 was the optimal water and nitrogen supply mode for tomato production in this study.

Ridge irrigation reduced greenhouse gas emission in double-cropping rice field

Yan Zeng, Fusheng Li

Summary: Comparing different ridge widths of RI with CI, results indicate that RI80 mode increased double-cropping rice yields by 11.3-17.6% and reduced methane emissions by 45.6-70.3%. However, it slightly increased N2O emissions from double-cropping rice fields. Overall, RI80 mode decreased GWP and GHGI by 45.2-61.4% and 52.5-74.8% in double-cropping rice fields compared to CI mode.

Summary: Accurate simulation of crop yield under different irrigation and nitrogen levels is crucial for precise water and fertilizer management. A three-year field experiment in Northwest China showed that crop yield responds differently to various water and nitrogen levels, highlighting the importance of balanced irrigation and nitrogen application for optimal yield. The modified W*N-Jensen model exhibited higher accuracy and consistency in simulating crop yield under different combinations of irrigation and nitrogen levels compared to traditional models.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of different water-saving irrigation modes on microbial community structure and function in paddy soil. The results showed significant differences in microbial communities between the flooding irrigation (FI) mode and the alternate wetting and drying irrigation (AI) mode as well as the ridge irrigation (RI) mode. The AI mode enhanced potentially beneficial microbes and genes related to carbon/nitrogen metabolism, while the RI mode showed opposite effects.

Characterization of the KNOTTED1-like HOMEOBOX gene family in kiwifruit and functional analysis of AcKNOX11 related to plant growth, flowering, and melatonin-mediated germination inhibition

Peng Jia, Rui Yan, Yuan Wang, Feng-huan Gao, Yang Liu, Qing-long Dong, Hao-an Luan, Xue-mei Zhang, Han Li, Su-ping Guo, Guo-hui Qi

Summary: The KNOX gene plays crucial roles in plant development, and this study identified 19 KNOX gene members in kiwifruit. One of the genes, AcKNOX11, is selectively expressed in flower buds and shoots, and its expression can be induced by ABA and melatonin. Functional analysis revealed that AcKNOX11 delays flowering, reduces plant height, alters leaf shape, and inhibits seed germination through ABA-melatonin interaction.

Summary: This study revealed that nitrogen deficiency can lead to increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and methylglyoxal (MG), but also enhances the ability of leaves and roots to detoxify these molecules. The effects of nitrogen deficiency on ROS and MG generation and their detoxification systems were found to be different in leaves and roots, with roots being more affected.

Effects of paper pouches of different light transmittance on the phenolic synthesis and related gene expression in peach fruit

Ziwen Su, Juan Yan, Binbin Zhang, Meng Sun, Zhixiang Cai, Zhijun Shen, Ruijuan Ma, Mingliang Yu

Summary: Bagging is a crucial cultivation measure that affects the quality of peach fruit by regulating exposure to light. This study investigated the effects of bagging on the content of phenolic compounds in peach fruit and identified the most sensitive compounds to bagging treatment. The study also explored the regulatory role of bagging on phenolic synthetic-related genes. The results showed that bagging affected the accumulation of different phenolics in different peach cultivars and light intensity played a significant role in the accumulation of anthocyanins and other phenolic substances in peach fruit. Additionally, the expression of structural genes and transcription factors related to phenolic synthesis was regulated by bagging and light conditions. These findings provide a foundation for understanding the regulation mechanism of light on the synthesis of phenolic compounds in peach fruit.

Genotypic differences in water deficit effects on leaf and crown traits in mature field-grown cocoa

Lucette Adet, Danae M. A. Rozendaal, Arthur Tapi, Pieter A. Zuidema, Philippe Vaast, Niels P. R. Anten

Summary: This study investigated the effects of water stress on cocoa trees and found that they are highly sensitive to water stress, with different genotypes exhibiting varied responses. Potassium application did not mitigate the negative effects of water stress. There was significant variation among genotypes in terms of leaf and crown traits, and positive interactions between genotype and irrigation were observed. These findings provide insights into the acclimation strategies of cocoa trees and can be useful for selecting drought-tolerant genotypes.
