A circular economy approach requires methods of resource management that are sustainable and efficient. A crucial process in waste management is collection and transportation of waste. One of the most valuable streams is waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). There is a variety of disposal methods available for residents and a variety of collection methods for companies. The scope of this study includes the application of artificial immune systems in planning routes of vehicles in a mobile program and in placement of containers in stationary collections of WEEE. The intent is to create a level playing field by comparing sustainability of the waste collections and transportation methods in optimal designs. The analysis includes a comparison of the three most common methods of WEEE collection including cost analysis and vehicle emission using case studies for urban and rural areas. The results show the importance of properly planned collection routes. Mobile collection is the most sustainable method of WEEE collection while drop off of waste by residents at municipal collection centers is the worst case due to high emissions and operation costs. The results and the proposed model give an opportunity to evaluate existing WEEE collection methods in urban and rural areas and propose some improvements for waste collecting companies.

Collecting Small-Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment in Poland-How Can Containers Help in Disposal of E-Waste by Individuals?

Piotr Nowakowski, Sandra Kusnierz, Julia Ploszaj, Patrycja Sosna

Summary: The study reveals a growing interest among residents in disposing of small e-waste, with a majority being aware of proper methods. However, only one-third of respondents actually intend to dispose of small e-waste. While containers in supermarkets have simple designs, those in residential areas are more attractive, yet the frequency of cleaning discarded items like lamps needs improvement.

Unveiling the economic and environmental impact of policies to promote animal feed for a circular food system

Alessandro Gatto, Marijke Kuiper, Corina van Middelaar, Hans van Meijl

Summary: This study examines the economic and environmental effects of transitioning towards more circular food systems in the European Union (EU27) by feeding animals with low-opportunity-cost feed and better utilizing local feed resources. The results show that providing subsidies for circularity and promoting the use of low-cost feed can increase animal production, but also have negative impacts on land use and emissions. On the other hand, promoting domestic feed sourcing through import tariffs can decrease animal production and greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture. However, complementary policies are needed to mitigate drawbacks and enhance benefits of a more circular agri-food system.
