Summary: This study explores the effects of tannic acid on the proliferation and invasion of colorectal cancer cells, and finds that it can reverse the invasive properties of cancer cells by inhibiting the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Tannic acid also blocks the migration of cancer cells induced by transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta), and this effect is achieved through the inhibition of multiple signaling pathways. Animal experiments demonstrate that tannic acid can significantly delay tumor growth without causing hepatotoxicity or nephrotoxicity.

Summary: This study investigated the pyrolysis and combustion of heavy fuel oil (HFO) and vacuum residual oil (VRO) using a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The results showed that pyrolysis was slightly slower than combustion at low temperatures, but significantly faster at high temperatures. Both oils resulted in minimal residue during combustion, while pyrolysis produced 10-19% residue. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to analyze the evolved volatiles from these processes.

Summary: The Outdoor Gas Emission Sampling (OGES) system was developed as a cost-effective alternative to expensive industrial gas monitoring equipment. It utilized a sampling plane with four discrete sampling points to measure the heat release rate (HRR) of large-scale open oil slick fires. The technique was particularly useful for enhanced burns with Flame RefluxerTM technology, which showed a higher HRR than predicted by existing flame height correlations.

Summary: In this study, a hair-coating polyphenol complex (PPC) was developed with ultraviolet (UV) protection properties, antistatic features, and the ability to enhance the mechanical strength of damaged hair. Different ratios of tannic acid (TA), gallic acid (GA), and caffeic acid (CA) in PPCs increased the self-recovery of damaged hair by protecting the cuticle. PPC prevented light transmission through damaged hair during UV radiation exposure. Surfaces coated with PPC1 (100:20:0.5) exhibited higher conductivity and antistatic performance, with a resistance of 0.72 MΩ. Coating damaged hair with a PPC1-containing shampoo increased durability and elasticity, with a tensile strain of up to 2.06x, indicating recovery of the damaged cuticle. PPC1-containing shampoo also prevented damage by scavenging excess reactive oxygen species in the hair. The natural PPC combination effect offers new insights into hair treatment and hair restoration technology.

Summary: Fe(III)-embedded dextran nanocoating is demonstrated as a boosting layer for enhanced deposition of Fe(III)-TA complex nanofilm with higher roughness. The pH stability tests reveal that the multilayer structures formed are highly stable at pH 7.4 but degrade rapidly at pH 10 and pH 2. Additionally, the concentration of Fe (III) source plays a crucial role in governing the deposition enhancement effect.

Summary: A unique Sol-gel-based method was used to deposit flame-retardant coatings on cotton fabric. SEM analysis revealed significant coverage of the fabric by the coatings. ATR-FTIR and EDS analysis provided compositional information of the coated samples. TGA and VFT tests showed that the coatings obtained for 5 h and zero heat-treatment time exhibited high resistance and excellent combustion properties, with a 28.86% char residue obtained for one sample (ET-5h-RT).

Summary: In this study, three fluoroalkyl trimethoxysilane (FATMS) additives with different chain lengths were incorporated into a two-component polyurethane clearcoat to improve its hydrophobic durability. The coatings modified with FATMS maintained their surface hydrophobicity under various conditions, but quickly lost it when exposed to both UV irradiation and/or high temperature with water. The results suggest that the FATMS route is more suitable for indoor applications at room temperature.

Summary: Green flame retardants have garnered attention for their environmental friendliness, but current options fall short in achieving high flame retardancy for flammable polymers and maintaining environmental protection. This study takes a two-pronged approach to address flame retardants and the flame-retardant process. An eco-friendly bio-based synergistic flame retardant (PAU), synthesized using phytic acid (PA) and urea (U), is used to create a flame retardant coating that can be directly applied to any surface shape using polydopamine as an adhesive. The resulting EPS-PAU exhibits excellent flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and light weight while only slightly increasing the density.
