Summary: Despite only constituting 35.8% of those seeking post-exposure prophylaxis, all 22 HIV infections occurred in men who have sex with men. This study suggests early consideration of pre-exposure prophylaxis in this population after a first episode of post-exposure prophylaxis.

Summary: Based on our research in Brazil, we found that the prevalence of PEPSE increased by 55.5% from 2011 to 2019, and there was an increasing proportion of repeated PEPSE. Repeated PEPSE was more common among cisgender men, transgender women, homosexuals, and individuals aged 25-29.

Summary: ED prescribers have barriers in providing HIV nPEP due to lack of knowledge and confidence. While most participants believe it is their responsibility to provide nPEP, only a small percentage actually prescribed it in the last year, with time and access to follow-up care being the main obstacles.

Summary: The study found that while the acceptance rate of HIV PEP among sexual assault victims was high, the follow-up rate in infectious disease clinics and the completion rate of PEP remained low. Analysis results indicated that psychiatric comorbidities and anal penetration were associated with the need for repeat ED visits among these sexual assault victims.

Summary: Female sex workers are disproportionately affected by sexual violence and HIV, but face social and structural barriers in accessing post-exposure prophylaxis. A survey conducted in Brazil found that 26.3% of sex workers experienced sexual violence, but only a small percentage sought healthcare services and used post-exposure prophylaxis.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the sexual behavior and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) of PrEP users in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Due to the lockdown measures, PrEP-care appointments were postponed or canceled, leading to a discontinuation of PrEP intake for some users. Despite a decrease in sexual partners, the rate of STIs among PrEP users remained steady. This highlights the importance of ensuring appropriate HIV/STI prevention services during times of crisis.

Summary: HIV has a significant impact on approximately 1.2 million individuals in the United States, particularly among African Americans, Latinos, and people of multiple races. Access to post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) has been hindered by accessibility issues, preventing its widespread use in at-risk communities. However, New York City implemented a pharmacy-initiated PEP program in 2017, which has been followed by eleven other states, aiming to increase access to PEP for high-risk individuals. Despite these initiatives, prescribing laws in over 75% of the US have not been changed, limiting the availability of PEP. This paper reviews the current status of pharmacist-initiated PEP in the US as part of the End the HIV Epidemic (EHE) initiative.

Summary: This study assessed the potential of the antiviral drug favipiravir as an alternative treatment for rabies. The results showed that using favipiravir with the rabies vaccine provided complete protection against death caused by the virus, and the virus-neutralizing antibody titer was significantly higher compared to the treatment with the vaccine and immunoglobulin. A clinical trial of this approach is needed, especially in countries with limited availability of immunoglobulin.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate healthcare professionals' (HCPs) knowledge, attitude, and practice concerning post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for HIV in Pakistan. The findings showed that the majority of respondents had adequate knowledge about HIV and exhibited a positive attitude, but there was a gap between knowledge and practical application. Many HCPs had experienced risky HIV exposure, but reporting was lacking.

Summary: In a study of young men who have sex with men (YMSM) in two US cities, it was found that a low percentage of individuals actively sought HIV testing after potential sexual exposure. Factors such as younger age, non-disclosure of sexual orientation, perceived HIV stigma, internalized homophobia, lower general resilience, and lower social support were associated with a lower likelihood of seeking exposure-influenced HIV testing. YMSM who rarely sought exposure-influenced testing had higher rates of drug use, binge drinking, and group sex, as well as lower awareness of HIV prevention measures and lower condom use compared to those who mostly/always sought such testing.

Summary: This is a case report of monkeypox infection in a male patient presenting with genital and labial ulcers, followed by submandibular lymphadenopathy, fever, and constitutional symptoms. The course was complicated by myopericarditis and an ongoing pleomorphic skin eruption. Viral deoxyribonucleic acid was detected by polymerase chain reaction in skin swabs, nasopharyngeal swab, saliva, and semen.

Summary: This study compared the 12-month incidence and persistence of anal HPV infection between vaccinated and unvaccinated gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM). The findings showed that the HPV vaccine was significantly protective against 12-month anal HPV cumulative incidence and persistence among sexually active GBM aged 16-30 years, especially when vaccination was initiated at younger ages or soon after sexual debut.

Summary: We report three cases of treatment-emergent resistance to NRTIs in patients receiving BIC/TAF/FTC therapy, and assessed whether these resistance mutations were present before the initiation. Deep sequencing revealed that the identified mutations were not present in baseline samples or samples collected before BIC/TAF/FTC initiation. The findings suggest that suboptimal adherence may lead to NRTI resistance during therapy with BIC/TAF/FTC.

Summary: Bidirectional intimate partner violence (IPV), the reporting of both IPV victimization and perpetration, is likely the most common form of violence among gay, bisexual, and other sexual minority men (GBM) and is thought to be part of a larger syndemic of stressors. This study examined associations between syndemic factors and lifetime bidirectional IPV among GBM in three Canadian cities to inform future interventions. The findings suggest that targeting interventions towards specific syndemic issues may help prevent and mitigate bidirectional IPV in GBM.

Summary: The systematic review found that oral tetracycline-class antibiotics for 2-18 weeks may increase resistance in subgingival, gastrointestinal and upper respiratory tract flora, although the effects are modest and transient. It is suggested that antimicrobial resistance in commensal bacteria should be included as study outcomes in STI prophylaxis trials.

Summary: This study conducted a survey among physicians in Nova Scotia, Canada and found a positive correlation between physicians' support for PrEP and their knowledge level, with higher support linked to greater understanding of PrEP. The knowledge of PrEP mediated the relationship between physicians' support for PrEP and their history of prescribing PrEP. Lack of drug coverage was identified as a major barrier for physicians to prescribe PrEP.
