Summary: The study analyzed the spatial distribution of ZIKV in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2015 and 2016, and its associations with socio-environmental factors. Results showed that low income may be a risk factor for Zika occurrence in the localities, while household conditions related to adequate water supply and public sewage disposal were associated with lower ZIKV cumulative incidence.

Summary: The mapping and changes of sugarcane plantations are important for the economy and environment, especially in the biofuel industry. This study evaluates two approaches to address the challenge of mapping sugarcane abandonment in a region dominated by smallholders in Brazil. Using Landsat imagery and temporal analysis, the study reveals the spatial and temporal patterns of sugarcane abandonment and provides a necessary database for further research on the underlying causes.

Summary: This study focuses on mapping the Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) of Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, which is at high risk from pollution caused by the petroleum sector. The results reveal that the bay has a high oil sensitivity, with the majority of the mapped coastline scoring ESI 8 and ESI 10. This is due to the presence of estuarine and solid substrate habitats that are protected from wave action, as well as the presence of manufacturing and oil handling plants and intensive urbanization. The rich biotic diversity, particularly in protected areas, further amplifies the bay's environmental vulnerability.

Summary: This study aims to identify, describe, and analyze populations in situations of socio-environmental vulnerability in Rio de Janeiro by integrating multiple indicators into a comprehensive index - the Socio-Environmental Vulnerability Index. The results show that socio-environmental vulnerability in Rio de Janeiro is exacerbated by at-risk situations and environmental degradation, particularly affecting the most disadvantaged groups living in slum areas. Therefore, the study concludes about the importance of these tools in guiding resource allocation and formulating more effective public policies.

Summary: This article explores the role of disaster events in urban politics through the concept of chronopolitics, focusing on how governments manipulate post-disaster space and use memory to challenge urban spatial segregation and forced removal patterns. Using the case of a catastrophic landslide in Rio de Janeiro in 2010, the state's quick actions to close political openings after the tragedy and emphasize 'future risk' to facilitate favela displacement illustrate a return to sovereign right to displace favelas. The paper expands the concept of chronopolitics to analyze how calamitous events normalize the exceptional and how trauma and memory challenge narratives inspired by modern aspirations of a Rio without favelas.

Summary: This study aimed to assess sediment contamination by different pollutants in coastal and marine environments at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The results showed environmental differences between coastal lagoon and oceanic beaches, mostly influenced by marine waters, while sediment characteristics largely varied among bay's beaches. PAHs and BPA were not detected, but PAEs were found for the first time in the sediments of Rio de Janeiro coast. DEHP was detected in all environments, DBP in coastal lagoon and three marine environments, and DnOP and DINP solely in the coastal lagoon.

Summary: This study examined the household transmission of SARS-COV-2 in a low-resource community in Rio de Janeiro and found that households with a high number of persons per room were at higher risk of SARS-CoV-2 occurrence. Children were not the principal source of SARS-CoV-2 infections in their households during the first wave of the pandemic.

Summary: The Guandu River, a major water source for over nine million people in Rio de Janeiro, has been heavily polluted for more than two decades, leading to high levels of phosphorus, cyanobacteria, and enteric bacteria. The use of Phoslock has proven ineffective in reducing phosphorus levels, and water extracted from the river has unpleasant odors and tastes. Proposed solutions include constructing sewage treatment plants, implementing strict water quality monitoring, environmental recovery efforts, and establishing protected areas to improve water quality.

Summary: The Flavivirus genus consists of a wide range of species that infect both vertebrates and invertebrates. Culex Flavivirus (CxFV) is an insect-specific virus that has garnered interest due to its ability to exclude other medically important viruses in nature. However, little is known about the ecology of CxFV and its co-circulation with other arboviruses. This study aimed to observe CxFV infection in mosquitoes captured in an urban area of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, characterize the virus circulation, and provide isolates. The results showed that the CxFV isolates from this study belonged to genotype 2, which is consistent with sequences from Latin America and Africa.

Summary: This study aims to describe the current situation of sexual aggression and evaluate the adherence to ambulatory care follow-up. The study involved female children and adolescents aged 0-19 years treated at a sexual violence care center from 2014 to 2018. Results showed that black girls, especially those aged <14 years, are more vulnerable to sexual violence, have lower adherence to follow-up, and often experience aggression within the household setting.

Summary: The aim of this study was to assess the rate of repeated pregnancy in adolescence and its association with early marriage and education level. The study found that the rate of repeated pregnancies among Brazilian adolescents remains high, with rates of 4.7% in the 10-14 age group and 27.3% in the 15-19 age group. Being married or in a stable union increased the likelihood of repeated pregnancy by 96% in the 10-14 age group and by 40% in the 15-19 age group. Additionally, lower education level and early marriage were associated with increased likelihood of repeated pregnancies in adolescence.

Summary: This study aimed to analyze the accuracy of two methods for detecting halitosis, the organoleptic assessment (OA) and volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) measurement via Halimeter (R) (Interscan Corporation), as well as information obtained from a close person (ICP). A total of 138 participants were included in the VSC test and 115 participants in the ICP test. Results showed that VSC had high sensitivity at the cut-off point of >65 ppb and high specificity at the cut-off point of >140 ppb. ICP had high specificity but low sensitivity, making it a potential tool for detecting chronic halitosis.
