BackgroundIn January 2016, a universal two-child policy was introduced in China. The association of interpregnancy interval (IPI) with perinatal outcomes has not previously been assessed among Chinese population. We investigated the effect of IPI after live birth on the risks of preterm delivery, and small, and large for gestational age births in China. MethodsWe conducted a cohort study among 227 352 Chinese women with their first and second delivery during 2000 to 2015. IPI was calculated as months from first live delivery to conception of the second pregnancy. Poisson regression models with robust variance were fit to evaluate associations of IPI with risk of adverse perinatal outcomes, adjusted for potential confounders. ResultsCompared to IPI of 24- <30 months, IPI <18 months was associated with higher risks of preterm birth (PTB) and small for gestational age (SGA). For IPI <6 months, the adjusted relative risks (RR) for PTB and SGA were 2.04 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.83, 2.27) and 1.43 (95% CI 1.31, 1.57), respectively. Women with IPI 60 months had higher risks of PTB and large for gestational age (LGA). For IPI 120 months, the adjusted RRs for PTB and LGA were 1.67 (95% CI 1.43, 1.94) and 1.10 (95% CI 0.97, 1.26). ConclusionsWomen with IPI <18 months after live birth had higher risk of PTB and SGA, and IPI 60 months was associated with higher risk of PTB and LGA. These findings may provide information to Chinese couples about the appropriate interpregnancy interval for a second pregnancy.

Investigating sex-specific associations of lipid traits with type 2 diabetes, glycemic traits and sex hormones using Mendelian randomization

Guoyi Yang, C. Mary Schooling

Summary: In this study, the associations of apoB, TG, and Lp(a) with type 2 diabetes and metabolic traits were examined using Mendelian randomization (MR). The results showed that apoB and Lp(a) had little association with type 2 diabetes and metabolic traits, while higher TG levels were associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes and higher glycemic traits, especially in women. The study also found that sex hormones may play a role in the relationship between TG and type 2 diabetes.

A review of current effective COVID-19 testing methods and quality control

Lijia Cheng, Liang Lan, Murugan Ramalingam, Jianrong He, Yimin Yang, Min Gao, Zheng Shi

Summary: COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is a highly infectious disease that primarily affects the respiratory system and can lead to severe illness. Early and accurate diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 is crucial for containing its spread and providing prompt treatment. Various methods, such as RT-PCR, LMAP, CRISPR, GICA, CT, and electrochemical sensors, are used for COVID-19 detection, but they vary in terms of efficiency, specificity, accuracy, sensitivity, cost, and throughput. It is important to review the advantages and disadvantages of different detection methods and explore technologies that can enhance detection efficiency and improve quality.

Simulated Research of Enhanced Heat Transfer Characteristics of LNG in Rectangular Small Channels with Circumference Micro-Grooves

Pingyang Wang, Xinglin Zhao, Zhenhua Liu

Summary: A new passive enhanced heat transfer technology is proposed for compact heat exchangers in supercritical LNG production by using circumferential micro-grooves on the top and bottom walls of rectangular channels. Numerical simulations were conducted to optimize the dimensions of the micro-grooves and study the heat transfer and flow characteristics of LNG. The effects of working fluid temperature, mass flow, and inlet pressure on heat transfer coefficient and friction factor were investigated, and the heat transfer mechanism near the micro-grooves was analyzed.

Effect of Working Current on C12A7 Hollow Cathode

Yajun Huang, Xiaoxian Wang, Guomin Cui, Pingyang Wang, Dongsheng Cai

Summary: The C12A7 hollow cathode is expected to lead a new generation of hollow cathodes due to its low work function and chemical stability. This study investigated the performance of the C12A7 hollow cathode at different working currents, ranging from 1 A to 20 A, in order to reduce issues caused by overheating. The results showed that the C12A7 hollow cathode performed well at low currents, but exhibited instability at high currents. Simulation results suggested that increasing the cathode orifice size can help reduce the risk of overheating. However, the short lifetime of the C12A7 hollow cathode under high-current conditions makes it difficult to apply in practical scenarios.

Summary: A study in Guangzhou found that many pregnant women with syphilis are not receiving the appropriate treatment, which is a missed opportunity to reduce adverse pregnancy outcomes. The study found that migrant pregnant women, multiparous participants, unmarried participants, and unemployed participants were more likely to receive no treatment or inadequate treatment. However, participants with a history of syphilis infection and higher education were less likely to receive untreated or inadequately treatment. The timing of syphilis diagnosis played a mediating role in the treatment status.

Association between incense burning and prenatal depressive symptoms: evidence from the Born in Guangzhou Cohort Study

Dongmei Wei, Songying Shen, Jinhua Lu, Wenyu Liu, Niannian Chen, Kin Bong Hubert Lam, Shiu Lun Au Yeung, Huimin Xia, Xiu Qiu

Summary: This study examined the association between incense burning, a source of indoor air pollution, and prenatal depressive symptoms, both alone and in combination with passive smoking. Data was collected using questionnaires in the Born in Guangzhou Cohort Study, and mixed-effects logistic regression models were utilized for analysis. The results showed that pregnant women exposed to household incense burning had higher odds of depressive symptoms compared to non-users. Additionally, both occasional and frequent exposure to the smell of incense were associated with increased odds of prenatal depressive symptoms. Higher duration of incense exposure was also linked to greater odds of experiencing depressive symptoms during pregnancy. No significant evidence of interaction between incense exposure and passive smoking was found.
