Guanosine (GUO) has neuroprotective effects in experimental models of brain diseases involving glutamatergic excitotoxicity in male animals; however, its effects in female animals are poorly understood. Thus, we investigated the influence of gender and GUO treatment in adult male and female Wistar rats submitted to focal permanent cerebral ischemia in the motor cortex brain. Female rats were subdivided into non-estrogenic and estrogenic phase groups by estrous cycle verification. Immediately after surgeries, the ischemic animals were treated with GUO or a saline solution. Open field and elevated plus maze tasks were conducted with ischemic and na < ve animals. Cylinder task, immunohistochemistry and infarct volume analyses were conducted only with ischemic animals. Female GUO groups achieved a full recovery of the forelimb symmetry at 28-35 days after the insult, while male GUO groups only partially recovered at 42 days, in the final evaluation. The ischemic insult affected long-term memory habituation to novelty only in female groups. Anxiety-like behavior, astrocyte morphology and infarct volume were not affected. Regardless the estrous cycle, the ischemic injury affected differently female and male animals. Thus, this study points that GUO is a potential neuroprotective compound in experimental stroke and that more studies, considering the estrous cycle, with both genders are recommended in future investigation concerning brain diseases.

Resveratrol increases the activation markers and changes the release of inflammatory cytokines of hepatic stellate cells

Cleverson Moraes de Oliveira, Leo Anderson Meira Martins, Arieli Cruz de Sousa, Ketlen da Silveira Moraes, Bruna Pasqualotto Costa, Moema Queiroz Vieira, Barbara Paranhos Coelho, Radovan Borojevic, Jarbas Rodrigues de Oliveira, Fatima Costa Rodrigues Guma

Summary: Resveratrol did not decrease the activation state of GRX and instead triggered a pro-activation effect at the 50 μM concentration. Despite the increase of TNF-α in culture media, the results on IL-6 and IL-10 secretion were in accordance with the anti-inflammatory role of Resveratrol in the model.

Summary: The research found that static magnetic field stimulation could affect the oxidative status and survival rate of healthy astrocytes, especially leading to necrosis after long-term stimulation; unlike substantial changes in mitochondrial function, the mitochondrial network of brain astrocytes did not show significant alterations.

Summary: This study used FDG-PET imaging to investigate the impact of the antipsychotic drug clozapine on brain glucose metabolism in rats, and found that downregulation of GLT-1 resulted in astrocyte-dependent cortical hypometabolism, resembling the hypometabolic signature observed in people developing dementia.

Longterm Increased S100B Enhances Hippocampal Progenitor Cell Proliferation in a Transgenic Mouse Model

Leticia Rodrigues, Krista Mineia Wartchow, Michael Buchfelder, Diogo Onofre Souza, Carlos-Alberto Goncalves, Andrea Kleindienst

Summary: In this study, the researchers investigated the role of S100B, a neurotrophic protein, in brain injury and neuroregeneration. Using S100Btg mice with increased expression of the S100B gene, they found enhanced proliferation and migration of progenitor cells, as well as reduced levels of GFAP, ApoE, and BDNF in certain brain regions. The study highlights the importance of the S100Btg model in evaluating the role of S100B in neuroregenerative medicine.
