The synthesis, structural characterization, cytotoxicity, and antimicrobial properties of four new complexes formed by employing acrylate anion and 2,2-bipyridine are reported herein. X-ray crystallography revealed the trinuclear nature of [Mn-3(2,2-bipy)(2)(C3H3O2)(6)] (1), meanwhile complexes with general formula [M(2,2-bipy)(C3H3O2)(2)(H2O)(x)].yH(2)O ((2) M: Ni, x = 1, y = 0; (3) M: Cu, x = 1, y = 0; (4) M: Zn, x = 0, y = 1; 2,2-bipy: 2,2-bipyridine; C3H3O2: acrylate anion) were shown to be mononuclear. The lowest minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 128 g mL(-1) was recorded for all four tested complexes against Candida albicans, for complex (3) against Escherichia coli, and for complex (4) against Staphylocococcus aureus. Compounds (3) and (4) were also potent efflux pumps activity inhibitors (EPI), proving their potential for use in synergistic combinations with antibiotics. Complexes (1)-(4) revealed that they were not cytotoxic to HCT-8 cells. They also proved to interfere with the cellular cycle of tumour HCT-8 cells by increasing the number of cells found in the S and G2/M phases. Taken together, these results demonstrate the potential of zinc and copper complexes for use in the development of novel antimicrobial and anti-proliferative agents.

Zinc(II) Carboxylate Coordination Polymers with Versatile Applications

Gina Vasile Scaeteanu, Catalin Maxim, Mihaela Badea, Rodica Olar

Summary: This review discusses the applications of Zn(II) carboxylate-based coordination polymers (Zn-CBCPs) in sensors, catalysts, infection and cancer treatment, as well as storage and drug-carrier materials. The luminescence properties of Zn-CBCPs, which are modulated by the nature of organic luminophores and their intermolecular interactions, allow for the sensing of various inorganic and organic pollutants. Zn-CBCPs, due to the Lewis acidity of Zn(II), can be used for dye elimination in wastewater through photocatalysis or inhibition of pathogenic microorganisms and tumors. Additionally, the porous structure of Zn-CBCPs enables the storage of gaseous or liquid molecules and improved drug delivery.

Metal-free photosensitized radical relay 1,4-carboimination across two distinct olefins

Guangying Tan, Fritz Paulus, Alessia Petti, Maxim-Aleksa Wiethoff, Anna Lauer, Constantin Daniliuc, Frank Glorius

Summary: A novel radical relay 1,4-carboimination between two distinct olefins with alkyl carboxylic acid-derived bifunctional oxime esters was achieved via energy transfer catalysis. The reaction showed high chemo- and regioselectivity, forming multiple C-C and C-N bonds in a single operation. This mild and metal-free method exhibited a broad substrate scope and excellent tolerance of sensitive functional groups, providing easy access to structurally diverse 1,4-carboiminated products. Furthermore, the obtained imines could be readily converted into valuable biologically relevant free gamma-amino acids.

The Challenge of Periprosthetic Joint Infection Diagnosis: From Current Methods to Emerging Biomarkers

Corneliu Ovidiu Vrancianu, Bogdan Serban, Irina Gheorghe-Barbu, Ilda Czobor Barbu, Roxana Elena Cristian, Mariana Carmen Chifiriuc, Catalin Cirstoiu

Summary: The number of implanted prosthetic joints is increasing due to longer life spans and increased mobility in older individuals. Unfortunately, the number of periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs), a severe complication after joint replacement surgery, is also on the rise. Efficient protocols for managing these infections can lead to preventive measures and effective diagnostic methods using laboratory tests. This review discusses current methods for PJI diagnosis and emerging synovial biomarkers used for prognosis, prophylaxis, and early detection of periprosthetic infections, as well as factors contributing to treatment failure.

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis, Structure, and Preliminary Biological Evaluation of Novel 6-Methoxy-5,6-dihydro-5-azapurines

Alena I. Siutkina, Svetlana Kalinina, Rongfang Liu, Laura H. Heitman, Anna Junker, Constantin G. Daniliuc, Dmitrii V. Kalinin

Summary: We report the microwave-assisted synthesis of previously unreported 6-methoxy-5,6-dihydro-5-azapurines, which have a promising purinelike scaffold for drug discovery. The method is simple and fast, using easily accessible reagents such as trimethyl orthoformate, acetic acid, and aminotriazole-derived N,N'-disubstituted formamidines. Preliminary biological evaluation showed that the synthesized 6-methoxy-5,6-dihydro-5-azapurines dose-dependently reduce the viability of HepG2 and A549 cancer cells with little to no influence on five tested purinergic receptors.
