Summary: Porous scaffolds can have improved biocompatibility and osteoconductivity by using coating technique to create micro-and nanostructures on the surfaces. This study employed a biomimetic approach to coat porous titanium scaffolds with a bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) integrated calcium phosphate (CaP) coating. In vitro characterizations demonstrated that the coated scaffolds exhibited mechanical properties similar to human cortical bone and released BMP-2 effectively. In vivo experiments on beagle dogs with mandibular defects showed that the biomimetic coating significantly promoted bone formation in the titanium scaffolds.

Summary: In this study, a porous Ti6Al4V scaffold with a biomimetic coating was designed and implanted in beagle dogs. The results showed that the coating induced ectopic bone formation and increased biocompatibility of the scaffold. This combination has the potential for bone reconstruction, but further clinical studies are needed.

Summary: This study evaluated different commercially available synthetic ceramic particles as compression-resistant matrix (CRM) added to Osteogrow implants. The results showed that Osteogrow-C implants with different ceramic particles induced the formation of bone-ceramic structure and promoted bone formation. Highly porous Vitoss ceramic demonstrated the highest bone volume, while Vitoss and ChronOs ceramics increased the number of trabeculae, and BAM and Dongbo ceramics increased the thickness of trabeculae.

Summary: The study introduces a novel mineralized PLGA/PSBMA scaffold as a carrier for rhBMP-2 with high efficiency sustained release leading to successful healing of critical-sized bone defects in rats at an ultralow dosage. This finding suggests promising potential for bone defect repair utilizing the mineralized scaffold.

Summary: Researchers have successfully created a smart titanium nanosurface that mimics the surface properties of tooth root cementum, leading to the regeneration of periodontal tissues. This nanosurface induces the formation of dentoalveolar fibrous joints, resulting in the regeneration of functional periodontium.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the contact angles and wettability of implant surfaces between beta-thalassemia major (BTM) patients and healthy individuals. The results showed that the decreased deformability of BTM patients did not affect the wettability of implant surfaces in vitro. Considering the lack of in-depth studies on dental implant success in BTM patients and the high prevalence of BTM in Cyprus, this study aimed to enrich the literature.

Summary: This study compared the bone in contact with titanium implant surfaces treated with bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) and carboxyethylphosphonic acid (CEPA) with those treated with conventional etched surface. The results showed that dental implant surfaces treated with CEPA and BMP-2 improved their biological response to osseointegration.

Summary: With the increasing attention to dental health, various dental treatment procedures have emerged. However, these procedures often result in the production of a large number of free radicals, causing oxidative stress and damage. This article reviews the origin of these free radicals, the types of antioxidants, and their mechanisms. The delivery of antioxidants in dental procedures and their feasibility for clinical applications are also discussed. Additionally, the importance of safety assessment for these materials and future challenges in antioxidant development are highlighted.
