Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected maternal and child health services for urban-slum-dwelling women in India. While immunization services and antenatal check-ups remained uninterrupted, these women preferred shorter hospital stays and reduced routine check-ups post-delivery to prevent infection.

Summary: This study examines the impact of COVID-19 on the health system in urban slums of Bangladesh. The findings reveal a significant burden of general and chronic illnesses among slum dwellers, with a majority seeking healthcare from informal providers. The pandemic has led to a reduction in healthcare utilization and challenges in health financing, human resources, and information sharing.

Summary: Despite neglecting post-TB morbidity in Global Burden of Disease estimates, there is growing evidence of the long-term impact of tuberculosis (TB) on quality of life. This study uses primary data to estimate years of life lost due to disability (YLDs), years of life lost due to premature mortality (YLL), and DALYs associated with post-TB cardiorespiratory morbidity in a low-income country. The results suggest that post-TB disability burden is greatly underestimated, which may lead to undervaluation of interventions and prevention strategies.

Summary: This study aims to explore the experience of caregivers in navigating urban immunization services for their children. The results show that emotional and practical factors play important roles in vaccination. However, there are also barriers such as overcrowding and long waiting times at the clinic, disrespect from health workers, and fear of vaccine side effects.

Summary: Given the recent, rapid urbanisation in Asia and the Pacific region, coupled with the triple burden of malnutrition, it is important to understand maternal, infant, and young child nutrition (MIYCN) in urban slum environments. This study analysed large-scale datasets from various countries to compare the MIYCN indicators in urban slum and non-slum areas. The results showed that while breastfeeding rates were higher in slums, indicators of infant and young child malnutrition were worse. There were also disparities in the wealth status between slum and non-slum populations.

Summary: Urban environments can significantly impact children's behaviors, exposures, and experiences, thus affecting their health, development, achievement, and realization of fundamental human rights. A multi-case study in four global cities examined the status of eleven articles in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The study revealed that children in all these cities face unequal exposure to urban environmental risks and amenities. Violations of child rights are often associated with car-based transportation systems, which face additional challenges due to rapid population growth and climate change. A child rights framework offers principles for collectively and across sectors re-imagining urban environments that prioritize the human rights of all citizens.

Summary: The study evaluated the expansion of an existing HIV and TB CHW programme to include NCDs, malnutrition, TB screening, family planning, and ANC. Results showed a decrease in default rates for chronic NCD care, an increase in first trimester ANC attendance, a decline in pediatric malnutrition case finding, and no changes in TB outcomes. CHW programmes can be successfully expanded to address broader health needs with careful consideration of capacity.

Summary: The study assessed the disparities in maternal, neonatal, and child health service utilization between slum and non-slum districts in Ghana. The findings reveal a significant decline in vaccination coverage and antenatal care attendance in slum districts, while skilled birth delivery and postnatal care were higher in urban slum areas compared to non-urban slum areas.

Summary: This study explored the associations between lifestyle behaviors and academic grades of inner urban and peri-urban high school students in Chongqing, China. The findings suggest that meeting recommended behaviors such as screen time, dietary choices, and sleep duration were positively correlated with high academic grades, particularly for inner urban students. Conversely, high frequency of sugar-sweetened beverage consumption was associated with lower academic performance. Multiple healthy lifestyle behaviors were found to have a stronger cumulative association with academic outcomes than individual behaviors, with inner urban students benefiting more from such behaviors.

Summary: This article introduces a method for extracting slum areas from Very High Resolution (VHR) satellite images using the Morphological Slum Index (MSI) approach, with a post-processing technique called Morphological Spatial Pattern Analysis (MSPA) to optimize misclassification. Through experiments on various VHR images, the proposed MSI with MSPA approach achieved high overall accuracy.

Summary: This study used a human-centered design approach to adapt and co-design a prototype for an evidence-based group care model for the postpartum period in Malawi. All stakeholders expressed a desire to participate in and offer group care during the postpartum period, collaborating to create a prototype that included health promotion topics, interactive activities, and service delivery structure. The recommended curriculum focused on hygiene, breastfeeding, family planning, nutrition, and mental health, with 6 sessions corresponding with the child vaccination schedule over the first 12 months postpartum.
