This work aimed to evaluate associated risks of fish consumption to human health, concerning mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) concentrations in fish species largely consumed in the Tapajos River basin in the Brazilian Amazon. Total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg) and Se concentrations were measured in 129 fish specimens from four sites of the Tapajos River basin. Estimated daily intake (EDI) of Hg and Se were reported regarding fish consumption. EDI were compared with the reference value of provisional tolerable daily intake proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO). Se:Hg ratios and selenium health benefit values (Se HBVs) seem to offer a more comprehensive fish safety model. THg concentrations in fishes ranged from 0.03 to 1.51 mu g g(-1) of wet weight (w.w.) and MeHg concentrations ranged from 0.02 to 1.44 mu g g(-1) (w.w.). 80% of the samples were below the value of Hg recommended by the WHO for human consumption (0.5 mu g g(-1) w.w.). However, Hg EDI exceeded the dose suggested by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (0.1 mu g kg(-1) day(-1)), due to the large level of fish consumption in that area. Se concentrations in fishes ranged from 0.02 to 0.44 mu g g(-1) w.w. An inverse pattern was observed between Hg and Se concentrations in the trophic chain (highest levels of Se in the lowest trophic levels). The molar ratio Se:Hg and Se HBVs were higher in iliophagous and herbivorous fishes, which is noteworthy to reduce toxic effects of Hg contamination. For planktivores, the content of Se and Hg was almost equimolar. Carnivorous fishes - with the exception of Hemisorubim platyrhynchos and Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum -, showed Se:Hg ratios < 1. Thus, they do not act as a favorable source of Se in the diet. Therefore, reduced intake of carnivorous fishes with preferential consumption of iliophages, herbivores and, to some extent, even planktivores should be promoted as part of a healthier diet.

Biomonitoring mercury contamination using fur from roadkilled giant anteaters

Gabriel Oliveira de Carvalho, Rodrigo Ornellas Meire, Adan Santos Lino, Debora Regina Yogui, Arnaud Leonard Jean Desbiez, Joao Paulo Machado Torres, Olaf Malm

Summary: This study investigated the mercury (Hg) levels in the fur of giant anteaters in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. The study found that juveniles had lower Hg concentrations than adults, and that the stage of carcass decomposition and vehicular traffic volume did not influence Hg levels. A spatial pattern of higher Hg concentrations in the eastern-southeastern region of the state was identified, potentially due to anthropogenic impacts.

Changes in mercury distribution and its body burden in delphinids affected by a morbillivirus infection: Evidences of methylmercury intoxication in Guiana dolphin

Summary: An unusual mortality event attributed to morbillivirus infection affected total mercury, methylmercury, and selenium bioaccumulation and body burden in Guiana dolphins. Differences in Se concentrations were found in individuals collected during the UME, likely due to impairment of the detoxification process in the liver. THg concentrations in the liver were higher and differed among organs, while Se concentrations in the skin and kidney were higher and varied among other tissues/organs.

A review on pesticides in flower production: A push to reduce human exposure and environmental contamination

Patricia C. G. Pereira, Claudio E. T. Parente, Gabriel O. Carvalho, Joao P. M. Torres, Rodrigo O. Meire, Paulo R. Dorneles, Olaf Malm

Summary: Flower import regulations are restricted for food security and biosafety, but the lack of pesticide limits for ornamental flowers can result in overuse of pesticides and trade of contaminated products. Many countries ban certain pesticides in flower production, with more research in developed countries, but there are still risks to both the environment and human health.

Antioxidant system alterations and biological health status of earthworms following long-term exposure to antibiotic-contaminated poultry litter

Sidney Fernandes Sales Junior, Evelyn Oliveira da Silva, Gabriel de Farias Araujo, Lorena Oliveira Souza Soares, Claudio Ernesto Taveira Parente, Olaf Malm, Enrico Mendes Saggioro, Fabio Verissimo Correia

Summary: Long-term exposure of Eisenia andrei earthworms to fluoroquinolone-contaminated poultry litter led to increased CAT and SOD activities, as well as dose-dependent responses in GST and GSH levels. However, lipid peroxidation levels showed a decreasing trend. These findings suggest a trend of antioxidant system attenuation in response to successive poultry litter applications, with major alterations observed in the first month of exposure.

Trophic position, altitudinal distribution, and water dependence as determining factors for mercury concentrations in tropical montane anurans

Leandro de Oliveira Drummond, Rodrigo Ornellas Meire, Caryne Braga, Carlos Eduardo de Rezende, Olaf Malm, Rui Cerqueira

Summary: This study investigated the influence of altitudinal distribution, size, trophic position, and degree of water dependence on mercury concentration in amphibians in a mountainous complex in southeastern Brazil. The results showed a positive relationship between elevation and mercury concentration in topsoil samples from rainforest sites, while samples from cloud forest and highland grasslands had lower mercury concentration than expected. This suggests that vegetation structure plays a key role in the deposition of atmospheric mercury, and various factors such as elevation, trophic level, and water dependence affect mercury concentration in amphibians.

Ventral feathers contained the highest mercury level in brown booby (Sula leucogaster), a pantropical seabird species

G. P. Bighetti, J. A. Padilha, L. S. T. Cunha, O. Malm, P. L. Mancini

Summary: Seabird feathers are important matrices for analyzing environmental contaminants. In this study on brown boobies, the concentration of total mercury (THg) was measured in different types of feathers, revealing higher levels in ventral and wing feathers compared to dorsal and tail feathers. Juvenile birds had lower concentrations of THg in all feather types compared to adults. Ventral feathers are suggested as the most suitable biomonitor for THg contamination in brown boobies, but further studies are needed for other tropical seabird species.

Summary: The main goal of this study was to evaluate the distributions of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in the sediments of Jurujuba Cove and their associations with physical and chemical parameters, assessing their geochemical behavior. The results showed that grain size acted as the main diluting agent. The highest THg concentrations were observed in the mussel-farm area, related to fine grain size and elevated organic carbon values.

Summary: This study evaluates the behavior of mercury and its methylmercury (MeHg) response upon sediment resuspension in two impacted areas of Guanabara Bay. The results show a statistically significant correlation between MeHg and resuspension time in the Rio de Janeiro Harbor sediments, indicating net methylation. This highlights the importance of considering concentration changes due to sediment resuspension-redeposition processes when assessing the variability of MeHg and associated toxicity risks.
