BACKGROUNDIn the past few years, much effort has been invested into developing a new blue economy based on harvesting, cultivating and processing marine macroalgae in Norway. Macroalgae have high potential for a wide range of applications, e.g. as source of pharmaceuticals, production of biofuels or as food and feed. However, data on the chemical composition of macroalgae from Norwegian waters are scant. This study was designed to characterize the chemical composition of 21 algal species. Both macro- and micronutrients were analysed. Concentrations of heavy metals and the metalloid arsenic in the algae were also quantified. RESULTSThe results confirm that marine macroalgae contain nutrients which are relevant for both human and animal nutrition, the concentrations whereof are highly dependent on species. Although heavy metals and arsenic were detected in the algae studied, concentrations were mostly below maximum allowed levels set by food and feed legislation in the EU. CONCLUSIONThis study provides chemical data on a wide range of algal species covering the three taxonomic groups (brown, red and green algae) and discusses both benefits of and potential limitations to their use for food and feed purposes. Increasing dietary n-6 fatty acids while keeping n-3 fatty acids stable decreases EPA in polar lipids of farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)

Bjorg K. Hundal, Nina S. Liland, Grethe Rosenlund, Marta Bou, Ingunn Stubhaug, Nini H. Sissener

Summary: Increased dietary n-6 FA leads to reduced n-3 in tissue polar lipids in Atlantic salmon, with EPA significantly reduced while DHA remains stable. Maintaining a stable n-3 content in polar lipids can be achieved by simultaneously increasing dietary n-3 content and maintaining the same n-6:n-3 FA ratio. The study suggests that a better use of dietary EPA is achieved by keeping the dietary n-6:n-3 FA ratio low.

Sensitivity of Atlantic salmon to the pesticide pirimiphos-methyl, present in plant-based feeds

Marc H. G. Berntssen, Grethe Rosenlund, Borja Garlito, Heidi Amlund, Nini H. Sissener, Annette Bernhard, Monica Sanden

Summary: The use of plant-based feeds in fish farming has introduced undesirable substances such as pesticides. Research indicates that commercially produced Atlantic salmon feed may contain unsafe levels of the pesticide pirimiphos-methyl (PM-m), leading to adverse effects on fish health. Fish fed with PM-m spiked feeds showed growth reduction, oxidative stress, liver damage, and disturbances in lipid metabolism. Safe limits for dietary PM-m were determined through dose-response analysis, setting the daily safe dose for fish consumption.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons modulate the activity of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) vitamin D receptor paralogs in vitro

Siri Ofsthus Goksoyr, Jed Goldstone, Roger Lille-Langoy, Erik-Jan Lock, Pal A. Olsvik, Anders Goksoyr, Odd Andre Karlsen

Summary: The study revealed that the Atlantic cod possesses two VDR orthologous genes, which can be activated by vitamin D. Some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons can interact with VDRs, affecting their transcriptional activities and potentially altering the vitamin D signaling pathway, leading to adverse effects on the cardiac development and bone deformities in fish.

Evolution of life cycles and reproductive traits: Insights from the brown algae

Svenja Heesch, Martha Serrano-Serrano, Josue Barrera-Redondo, Remy Luthringer, Akira F. Peters, Christophe Destombe, J. Mark Cock, Myriam Valero, Denis Roze, Nicolas Salamin, Susana M. Coelho

Summary: A study on the evolution of life cycles in brown algae revealed that diploid growth evolves when sexual reproduction is preferred over asexual reproduction. The research also found that haploid sex determination is ancestral to diploid sex determination, and isogamous species in brown algae evolved from anisogamous ancestors, contrary to the commonly reported pattern of evolution from isogamy to anisogamy.

Benthic diatom diversity in a turbid brackish lagoon of the Baltic Sea

Kana Kuriyama, Svenja Heesch, Ulf Karsten, Rhena Schumann

Summary: The Darss-Zingst Bodden Chain, a shallow lagoon on the Southern Baltic coast, was thoroughly studied in terms of hydrological, biogeochemical, and floristic and faunistic aspects. A recent revisit of a sampling site revealed a total of 103 diatom taxa in sediment and macrophyte samples collected between 2015 and 2019. Compared to the 1970s, a greater variety of epipsammic diatoms, including many small species, were observed. The study highlights the importance of combining light and electron microscopy for accurate identification of small diatoms and comprehensive understanding of diatom flora in different benthic habitats.
