The paper deals with two rare earth elements (REE) concentrates recovered from uranium leach liquors after sorption separation of uranium. Activity of the REE concentrates was found to be 10(6) Bq kg(-1); Ac-227 and its short-lived daughter products were the main radioactive impurities contributing more than 99% of total activity. Activity of both U-238 + Th-232 in the REE concentrates did not exceed 0.2% of total activity. Extraction by 2-ethylhexylphosphonic acid mono-(2-ethylhexyl) ester (P-507 extractant) in Shelsol D90 diluent was suggested for REE deactivation. It was shown that thorium may be eliminated by extraction in strong acidic media (pH - 0.5 to - 1), whereas radium extraction was suppressed over the whole studied pH range. Further REE separation to heavy and light groups at pH 1 resulted in selective concentration of actinium in light REE group. The suggested separation flowsheet was tested on the real REE concentrate. It was shown that obtaining non-radioactive fraction of heavy REE is possible.

The study of radium and polonium sorption by a thin-layer MnO2-CTA sorbent

Vladimir S. Semenishchev, Lyubov A. Tomashova, Svetlana M. Titova

Summary: The study focuses on the sorption of radium-223 and polonium-210 on a thin-layer MnO2-CTA sorbent. The results show a high sorption efficiency for both radium and polonium, with observed changes in the alpha spectrum quality during the sorption process. The different behaviors of radium and polonium in terms of alpha peak width suggest potential differences in sorption mechanisms and diffusion processes.

Intensification of carbonate scandium leaching from red mud (bauxite residue)

Vladimir Rychkov, Maxim Botalov, Evgeny Kirillov, Sergey Kirillov, Vladimir Semenishchev, Grigory Bunkov, Denis Smyshlyaev

Summary: Bauxite residue is a promising source of scandium, with nearly 150 tons of this trace metal appearing annually in waste dumps in the aluminum plants of the Ural region, Russia. A method of red mud carbonization by carbon dioxide has been described, resulting in scandium leaching and decrease of toxicity. Methods to increase scandium leaching degrees, such as ultrasonic treatment and mechanical activation, were evaluated. It was suggested that carbonated red mud had high sorption activity, causing secondary loss of scandium in the carbonate treatment process.

The alpha sources based on adsorbed 214Pb on thin-layer manganese dioxide sorbents

Vladimir S. Semenishchev

Summary: The article discusses the use of two thin-layer sorbents with manganese dioxide for alpha particle spectrometry, showing different adsorption behaviors towards Pb-214 and Bi-214. These sources can be utilized for testing the energy resolution of alpha spectrometers and in student lab experiments, offering simplicity in preparation and no radioactive waste due to the short half-life of Pb-214.

Summary: A series of extraction chromatographic resins containing various phosphorus-containing and DGA-based extractants and ionic liquids were synthesized and studied for their sorption characteristics for rare earth elements (REE) in sulfate solutions. The study found that the resin capacity for REE in sulfuric acid solutions was not affected by the matrix type, and the acidity of the aqueous phase played a significant role in lanthanides sorption from sulfate solutions.

A new method for evaluation of diffusion coefficients of alpha emitters via mathematical treatment of alpha spectra

Vladimir S. Semenishchev, Evgenii V. Polyakov, Elena N. Kulyashova, Vitaly A. Rogozhnikov

Summary: The article discusses the results of experiments on the sorption of alpha emitting radionuclides on thin-layer sorbents consisting of manganese dioxide layer coated onto polymer films. The experiments reveal an increase in the width of alpha peaks on the sorbents' spectra with longer sorption times, attributed to the diffusion of alpha emitters into the sorbents. A mathematical treatment method of the alpha spectra is proposed to calculate the diffusion coefficients of the alpha emitters in flat samples. The method is tested on manganese dioxide sorbents after sorption of various radionuclides, showing different mobility patterns for different radionuclides.
