Summary: This study confirmed the significant synergistic effect in the photocatalytic ozonation process for less adsorbed organic pollutants, while catalytic ozonation showed faster kinetics due to the higher exposed surface area of TiO2 agglomerates. The high BET surface area of the photocatalyst is crucial for fast surface reactions, while good dispersion and charge separation play important roles in the degradation of less adsorbed pollutants.

Summary: This study investigates the challenge of providing safe tap water while limiting the occurrence of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in a full-scale drinking water treatment plant. Different technologies, such as aeration, coagulation, hydrogen peroxide dosage, ion exchange, and ultrafiltration, were studied in a real surface water matrix. The results show that agitation aeration is most effective in removing DBPs directly, while ion exchange resin is the best at inhibiting their formation. Hydrogen peroxide dosage also shows promising results in preventing the formation of bromate. This study serves as a reference for selecting optimal treatment technologies in full-scale drinking water treatment plants to limit DBP occurrence.

Summary: Bacteria enter a viable but non-culturable state to deal with environmental stress, and the glyoxylate cycle is a key metabolic pathway for maintaining low metabolic activity in these bacteria. Inhibiting the glyoxylate cycle leads to limited reactivation and death of non-culturable bacteria due to disrupted material and energy metabolism, as well as decreased antioxidant capacity.

Summary: Polypyrrole-gelatin aerogels containing magnetic barium ferrite particles were synthesized and used for the removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous media. The optimal pH for adsorption was found to be 4, due to the dominance of HCrO4- species and its better adsorption and reduction compared to CrO42-. The presence of magnetic particles did not affect the adsorption performance of the aerogels. The adsorption mechanism involved electrostatic interaction between chromium and the adsorbent.

Summary: In this study, physically cross-linked hydroxyethyl cellulose grafted polyacrylic acid-co-polyacrylamide/silver nanocomposite with excellent antimicrobial and enhanced MB adsorption properties was developed. Silver nanoparticles were prepared using a green in-situ reduction process and characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, TEM, ATR-IR, XRD, SEM-EDS. The swelling ratio of the nanocomposite was dependent on the content of AgNPs and pH. The nanocomposite demonstrated good swelling kinetics and controlled release behavior. The grafting of HEC and incorporation of AgNPs improved the thermal stabilities and activation energies of the nanocomposite. The nanocomposite showed strong antimicrobial activity against various bacteria and high adsorption capacity for MB under specific conditions.

Summary: One-step adsorptive purification of methane from multi-component mixtures is significant but challenging. A bismuth-based metal-organic framework (SU-100) with multiaffinity is utilized to simultaneously remove CO2, C2H2, and C2H6 from CH4. The framework exhibits good selectivity under ambient conditions and maintains stable adsorption capacity. The results demonstrate the potential for highly selective capture of gas mixtures in the purification of natural gas.

Summary: This study reveals that chronic exposure to PM induces chronic inflammation and development of COPD by dysregulating NAD+ metabolism and subsequent SIRT1 deficiency in pulmonary macrophages. Activation of SIRT1 by resveratrol effectively mitigates PM-induced inflammation and COPD development. Targeting metabolic and epigenetic reprogramming in macrophages induced by PM is a promising strategy for COPD treatment.

Summary: Microplastic contamination in marine ecosystems poses a growing concern due to its trophic transfer and negative effects on marine organisms. This study investigates the transfer and impacts of polystyrene microplastics in an estuarine food chain. The results show that microplastics can be transferred through the food chain, although the transfer rates are low. The exposed organisms exhibit stress responses, suggesting the potential risk of microplastics reaching humans through the food chain.

Summary: This study measured the levels of phthalate metabolites in breast milk collected from mothers in southern China. The results showed that phthalates are still prevalent in the region, and breastfeeding contributes to phthalate intake in infants. However, the levels detected do not pose significant health risks to infants based on dietary exposure. The increasing exposure to certain phthalates calls for further research into their sources and potential risks.
