Total least squares regression is a reliable and efficient way to analyze the geometry of a bestfit plane through georeferenced data points. The suitability of the input data, and the goodness of fit of the data points to the best-fit plane are considered in terms of their dimensionality, and they are quantified using two parameters involving the minimum and intermediate eigenvalues from the regression, as well as the spatial precision of the data.

Is Cell-to-Cell Scale Variability Necessary in Reservoir Models?

Hossam Osman, Gavin H. Graham, Arthur Moncorge, Carl Jacquemyn, Matthew D. Jackson

Summary: The study investigates the impact of removing cell-to-cell variability on predictions of fluid flow in reservoir models. It finds that capturing flow does not necessarily require cell-to-cell variability, but rather the spatially correlated variability in petrophysical properties is key. Reservoir modeling efforts should focus on capturing correlated geologic domains in a realistic and computationally efficient manner.

Reactive transport modeling in heterogeneous porous media with dynamic mesh optimization

A. Yekta, P. Salinas, S. Hajirezaie, M. A. Amooie, C. C. Pain, M. D. Jackson, C. Jacquemyn, M. R. Soltanian

Summary: This paper introduces a numerical simulator, IC-FERST-REACT, for solving compositional multiphase flow and reactive transport problems. The simulator effectively couples IC-FERST with PHREEQCRM to simulate complex hydrogeological, biological, chemical, and mechanical processes including CO2 geological sequestration. Model coupling is achieved through an efficient API to reduce computational costs and capture flow instabilities. Benchmark examples demonstrate the capability of IC-FERST-REACT in solving multiphase flow and reactive transport.

Sketch-based interface and modelling of stratigraphy and structure in three dimensions

Carl Jacquemyn, Margaret E. H. Pataki, Gary J. Hampson, Matthew D. Jackson, Dmytro Petrovskyy, Sebastian Geiger, Clarissa C. Marques, Julio D. Machado Silva, Sicilia Judice, Fazilatur Rahman, Mario Costa Sousa

Summary: Geological modelling is commonly used in predicting resource potential in subsurface reservoirs, but the traditional methods can be slow and require expertise. This study introduces an alternative approach using sketch-based interface and modelling, allowing for rapid creation of complex 3D models. The proposed geological operators handle interactions between surfaces to form realistic models, providing flexibility and intuitiveness for geoscientists to create 3D models quickly.

A new mode of mineral replacement reactions involving the synergy between fluid-induced solid-state diffusion and dissolution-reprecipitation: A case study of the replacement of bornite by copper sulfides

Idowu A. Adegoke, Fang Xia, Artur P. Deditius, Mark A. Pearce, Malcolm P. Roberts, Joel Brugger

Summary: Mineral replacement reactions are influenced by solid-state diffusion and coupled dissolution-reprecipitation (CDR) mechanisms. At low temperatures, such as 160-200 degrees Celsius, solid-state diffusion and CDR processes play a dominant role in copper mineral replacement reactions. Experimental results show that the presence of hydrothermal fluids can induce solid-state exsolution, while the absence of fluids will not lead to this phenomenon.

Conditioning surface-based geological models to well data using artificial neural networks

Zainab Titus, Claire Heaney, Carl Jacquemyn, Pablo Salinas, M. D. Jackson, Christopher Pain

Summary: Surface-based modelling provides an efficient method for generating realistic representations of heterogeneity in reservoir models. By training a neural network to learn the relationship between model inputs and facies identification, and using back-propagation for optimization, the approach allows for conditioning of models to observed data and evaluation of spatial variations in geological heterogeneity.

Reaction Coronas at Olivine-Plagioclase Contacts in Host Rocks from the Nova-Bollinger Ni-Cu-Co Deposit, Albany-Fraser Orogen, Western Australia: Evidence of a Magmatic to Metamorphic Continuum

Natalia Torres-Rodriguez, Stephen J. Barnes, Valentina Taranovic, Mark A. Pearce, Michael Verrall, Louise E. Schoneveld

Summary: The cumulate rocks of the Nova intrusions exhibit reaction coronas between olivine and plagioclase, with mineral textures being analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and synchrotron X-ray fluorescence microscopy. The initial magmatic stage of corona formation suggests temperatures around 1035 degrees C and pressures between 0.76 and 0.96 GPa, while two-pyroxene assemblages within the symplectites indicate temperatures around 850-900 degrees C and pressures between 0.7 and 1.1 GPa. These findings confirm that the Nova intrusions were emplaced under granulite-facies peak metamorphic conditions at crustal depths of 28-35 km.

Constraints on the preservation of proxy data in carbonate archives - lessons from a marine limestone to marble transect, Latemar, Italy

Mathias Mueller, Carl Jacquemyn, Benjamin F. Walter, Chelsea L. Pederson, Simon L. Schurr, Onyedika A. Igbokwe, Niels Joens, Sylvia Riechelmann, Martin Dietzel, Harald Strauss, Adrian Immenhauser

Summary: This study evaluates spatial and temporal gradients in processes and products related to contact metamorphism, dolomitization, and dedolomitization of marine limestones in the Middle Triassic Latemar isolated platform in the northern Italian Dolomite Mountains. It sheds light on extreme textural and geochemical complexity through detailed analysis of petrography, fluid inclusion analysis, delta C-13 and delta O-18 data, and Sr-87/Sr-86 isotope ratios. These results are relevant for understanding alteration products ranging from high-grade metamorphic overprint to moderately altered limestones along vertical gradients, as well as the conservative marine delta C-13 and delta O-18 values in both marbles and low-temperature hydrothermal dolomites.

Working up an Apatite: Enigmatic Mesoarchean Hydrothermal Cu-Co-Au Mineralization in the Pilbara Craton

David C. M. Fox, Samuel C. Spinks, Milo Barham, Christopher L. Kirkland, Mark A. Pearce, Mehrooz Aspandiar, Renee Birchall, Ed Mead

Summary: Using U-Pb geochronology of hydrothermal apatite, this study provides the first absolute age constraints on the timing of mineralization for the Carlow Castle Cu-Co-Au deposit, estimating it at around 2957 million years ago. The mineralization is dominated by a propylitic assemblage with alkaline fluid chemistry and peak temperatures exceeding 300 degrees Celsius. The unique Cu-Co-Au mineralization at Carlow Castle is associated with significant base-metal volcanogenic massive sulfide mineralization and magmatic activity related to back-arc rifting in the northwest Pilbara craton.

A TALE OF THREE FLUIDS: FLUID-INCLUSION AND CARBONATE CLUMPED-ISOTOPE PALEOTHERMOMETRY REVEALS COMPLEX DOLOMITIZATION AND DEDOLOMITIZATION HISTORY OF THE LATEMAR PLATFORM

Mathias Mueller, Benjamin F. Walter, Peter K. Swart, Niels Jons, Carl Jacquemyn, Onyedika A. Igbokwe, Adrian Immenhauser

Summary: This study focuses on the Triassic Latemar isolated platform in the Dolomite Mountains of northern Italy. It explores spatial and temporal gradients in processes and products related to contact metamorphism, dolomitization, and the dedolomitization of marine limestones. The findings show that fluid mixing resulted in the precipitation of two complex carbonate successions. The data from fluid inclusions and clumped isotopes reveal the complexity of a multi-fluid system and provide answers to the controversial interpretation of dolomitizing fluid temperature in Latemar.
