Summary: After esophagectomy for esophageal cancer, there is a significant increase in healthcare appointments, with patients who have increased healthcare appointment cancellations experiencing lower post-esophagectomy survival, providing an opportunity for intervention in patients with historically high cancellation rates.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of the Core MWH Model on ANC and PNC attendance, family planning use, and vaccination rates for mothers in rural Zambia. Results showed that mothers who used the Core MWH Model had better outcomes across these indicators, indicating the potential of maternity waiting homes to improve facility services utilization for vulnerable mothers.

Summary: This study aims to assess the associations between the introduction of an electronic appointment reminder system and the waiting times for patients in the Veterans Affairs Health System. The results showed that the adoption of the electronic reminder system was associated with a decrease in the mean number of days patients had to wait for their appointments. However, it was also found that patients who missed their bookings experienced increased waiting times.

Summary: Access to behavioral health services is a critical issue, and longer wait times decrease the likelihood of appointment attendance. This study found that each additional week of waiting was associated with a decrease in odds of attendance. Hispanic/Latinx patients, non-Hispanic/Latinx White patients, Black patients, patients with private insurance, and patients with Medicare had lower odds of attendance per week of waiting. Limiting scheduling may help improve utilization of behavioral health care by reducing no shows.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of time (season, surgical starting time, preoperative waiting time) on patients with gastric cancer. It was found that starting surgery in the midday may lead to more complications, while patients with long preoperative waiting times had shorter postoperative hospital stays.

Summary: This article discusses the recommendations for annual screening of lung cancer with chest low-dose CT and screening of colorectal cancer with CT colonography. It also explores the possibility of combining these two screenings in a single CT appointment. The article highlights the importance of Computer Assisted Diagnosis systems and identifies some uncertainties that need to be addressed.

Summary: This research focuses on the operation and energy consumption of living systems in non-equilibrium states, proposing a method using hidden Markov process waiting time statistics to bound entropy production. By inferring entropy production bounds from experimental data for gene regulatory networks, mammalian behavioral dynamics, and other biological processes, the necessary entropic cost of heartbeat regulation in humans, dogs, and mice is estimated.

Summary: This study compared primary care non-attendance between telehealth and in-person visits, and described patient characteristics associated with telehealth non-attendance. The results showed that non-attendance for telephone visits was initially higher than for in-person visits but decreased later, and non-attendance for video visits was higher than for in-person visits during both early and later periods. Telephone visits had fewer differences in non-attendance by demographics, while video visits were associated with increased non-attendance for older, male, non-English or non-Spanish speaking, and publicly or uninsured patients.

Summary: Web-based appointment services can improve efficiency, but are often affected by customer non-attendance. Previous research overlooked the opportunistic nature of no-shows and the impact of cancellation policies. This study proposes a research model based on transaction cost theory and tests it in the context of web-based outpatient registration services. The results demonstrate that no-shows can be reduced by increasing asset specificity and decreasing uncertainty. Awareness of cancellation policies can lead to more cancellations but weaken the effects of asset specificity factors. Additionally, stricter cancellation policies can decrease no-shows.

Summary: Appointment systems are widely used, with the common format being equally-spaced (ES) system. However, this system has the drawback of long waiting times, leading to higher no-show rates. To address this, we propose the equal-waiting (EW) system where waiting times are equal. Lab experiments show that the EW system increases the attractiveness of later appointments and improves customer show-up rates. Incorporating individual preferences and no-show behavior into models, we find that the EW system significantly increases show-up rates and improves system utilization compared to the traditional ES system.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and acceptability of using SMS text messages containing immunization information in different languages to remind parents of their child's 18-month immunization appointment. The intervention resulted in a reduction in appointment no-shows at one health center, and the reminders were found to be helpful and acceptable by the majority of respondents. The diverse languages accessed in web-based immunization information highlight the need for appropriate translations.

Summary: A pre-scheduled appointment is an effective tool to increase attendance in breast cancer screening programs, regardless of the screening history. This study found that sending invitations with pre-scheduled appointments significantly increased attendance rates in both mobile and hospital-based screening units.

Summary: The study identified an ancient Chinese founder mutation dating back approximately 77.9 generations, possibly common among individuals of southern Han Chinese descent. Through evidence from phenotypic/family history studies, segregation analysis, and functional characterization, the BRCA1 variant was reclassified from uncertain significance to pathogenic.
