Summary: Despite the lack of reliable data on sepsis epidemiology, this study aims to generate reliable epidemiological estimates by linking data from a population-based database to a reference standard of clinical medical record review. The study found that using ICD-coded hospital discharge diagnosis for sepsis identification suffers from limited sensitivity, and data from ICD do not allow investigation of underlying pathogens and antimicrobial resistance.

Summary: This study used a large administrative dataset to investigate post-treatment Lyme disease syndrome (PTLDS). The results showed that PTLDS patients had similar age and temporal distributions compared to patients with resolved Lyme disease, but had higher rates of certain chronic conditions. There were no significant differences in the use of antibiotics between PTLDS and resolved Lyme disease patients. This research is important for understanding the etiology and diagnosis of PTLDS.

Summary: This study evaluated the overall survival of US patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) treated with intravenous (IV) edaravone compared to those not treated with IV edaravone in a real-world setting. The findings showed that IV edaravone treatment was associated with prolonged overall survival in a large cohort of predominantly riluzole-treated ALS patients in the US.

Summary: Our study evaluated DATASUS as a potential data source for pharmacoepidemiologic studies in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in the Brazilian population, focusing on treatment patterns and determinants of initiating or switching to a novel therapy. Through a descriptive database study of RA patients, we found that DATASUS is suitable for analyzing RA treatments and reflects the public health system in Brazil.

Summary: The study validated several claims-based definitions of drug-resistant epilepsy by identifying predictors such as drug-resistant epilepsy diagnosis code, number of antiseizure medications used, type of antiseizure medications, neurosurgery or epilepsy surgery visits. The study also developed claims-based definitions to maximize overall predictiveness, sensitivity, and specificity for different research purposes.

Summary: Using data from the IBM MarketScan Research database, this study found a potential association between paternal health, including metabolic syndrome, and male genital malformations in offspring. Specifically, fathers with multiple components of metabolic syndrome were observed to have an increased risk of having sons born with hypospadias.

Summary: This study used network analysis to analyze the comorbidity status of hospitalized patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD), revealing that IHD patients have a higher comorbidity burden compared to controls. The comorbidity network of IHD consisted of significant associations between 71 chronic conditions, with densely connected comorbidities being rare ones. Male patients showed a higher comorbid burden and more complex comorbidity relationships than females. The comorbidity burden increased with age. This network-based approach improves our understanding of comorbidities related to IHD.

Summary: Linked administrative data are valuable for describing disease patterns, understanding causes, and evaluating interventions. However, the processes involved in generating and linking these data may introduce bias, which is often overlooked by researchers. This paper presents a framework for describing and reducing biases in analyzing administrative data, based on the authors' experience with a large Brazilian cohort. Eight recommendations are provided to mitigate biases when using administrative data for analysis.

Summary: Lung cancer, the most common cancer worldwide, has the highest mortality rate for men and the second highest for women in Germany. This study analyzed data from a large health insurance fund in Germany and found that comorbidities, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, peripheral vascular disease, and diabetes without chronic complications, were negatively associated with survival among lung cancer patients.

Summary: This study developed and validated a claims-based, machine learning risk model for predicting clinical outcomes in medical and surgical patient populations. The risk model showed high predictive accuracy for 30-day mortality and most adverse events, with moderate accuracy for rehospitalization and some adverse events. The machine learning algorithm performed well on a second independent dataset, confirming its reliability and generalizability.

Summary: This study used an electronic medical record algorithm to identify atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and validated the predictive performance of 8 risk scores. The results showed that the CHASE-LESS and AS5F scores had adequate discrimination and calibration for predicting AF detected after stroke.

Summary: In Germany, record linkage of claims and cancer registry data is challenging due to the absence of a unique personal identifier. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and performance of a deterministic linkage procedure based on indirect personal identifiers. The results showed that the sensitivity of the deterministic linkage approach was too low compared to the probabilistic linkage procedure.

Summary: The study examines the osteopathic versus allopathic composition of the radiologist workforce and the practice characteristics of radiologists with different medical degrees. The results show a growing representation of osteopathic physicians in the radiologist workforce, who are more likely to practice as general radiologists, work in rural areas, and be located in the Midwest.

Summary: This study investigated the incidence and survival outcomes of second primary cancer (SPC) in childhood cancer patients in Japan. Results showed a high incidence of SPC, with central nervous system cancers contributing the most to the overall burden. Patients treated with radiotherapy alone had a higher risk of developing SPC, and the survival probabilities after SPC diagnosis were relatively low.

Summary: In this study, the usefulness of the Ascure program for heated tobacco product (HTP) users was evaluated, and it was found that HTP users were more likely to quit smoking compared to exclusive cigarette users. The Ascure program may be a valuable smoking cessation option for HTP users and cigarette smokers.

Summary: The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) is widely used for screening perinatal depression, but its 10th item for evaluating suicide ideation is inaccurate and may cause distress. The study suggests that the EPDS-9 without the 10th item is highly correlated with the full EPDS or EPDS-10. The EPDS-9 performs equivalently to EPDS-10 in differentiating depression diagnosis and screening for depression.

Summary: This study explored the current perceptions about COVID-19 booster vaccination among the Japanese public. The results showed that factors such as young age, history of COVID-19, distrust of the government's prevention measures, lack of confidence in vaccine efficacy and safety, low reliance on the vaccine, and belief in conspiracy theories were associated with booster vaccine hesitancy. Clear and trustworthy information, especially targeted and tailored messages for the young generation, are important for promoting COVID-19 booster vaccination.
