Summary: This study compared the efficacy and safety of teriparatide and denosumab with oral bisphosphonates. The results showed that teriparatide and denosumab were superior to bisphosphonates in increasing bone mineral density and preventing vertebral fractures. Therefore, teriparatide and denosumab may be considered as first-line treatments for glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.

Summary: A systematic review was conducted on the risk-benefit of using bone-modifying agents (BMAs) for more than 2 years in breast cancer or castrate-resistant prostate cancer patients. The evidence suggests that BMAs may reduce skeletal-related event rates but have limited impact on quality of life, with potential risks of osteonecrosis of the jaw and other toxicities. Prospective randomized studies with a focus on quality of life are needed to better inform the use of BMAs beyond 2 years.

Summary: Animal models are important tools for studying the mechanistic basis of cancer-related inflammation. Several inflammatory mediators have been found to play specific roles in the initiation and perpetuation of colitis and colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CACC). There is currently no consensus on the induction method for CACC models. Parameters commonly used to characterize the models include body weight, stool consistency, inflammatory and angiogenesis markers, presence of ulcers, colon thickness or hyperemia, and histological evaluation of inflammation.

Summary: Primary hyperparathyroidism is the most common cause of hypercalcemia in outpatient settings, with most patients being asymptomatic or presenting with non-specific signs. Recent guidelines recommend surgery for patients under 50 years old with significant hypercalcemia, impaired renal function, renal stones, or osteoporosis. Medical interventions, such as optimizing calcium and vitamin D intake and using cinacalcet, can be considered for patients not undergoing surgery. The impact of medical treatment on fracture risk reduction should be a focus of future research.

Summary: In this meta-analysis, the effectiveness of anti-resorptive therapies (bisphosphonates and denosumab) in preventing/treating bone loss and hypercalcemia in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) was investigated. The results showed that anti-resorptives significantly increased bone mineral density (BMD) at the lumbar spine and femoral neck, increased serum parathyroid hormone (PTH), and decreased serum calcium levels. Bisphosphonates only increased BMD at the lumbar spine, while denosumab increased BMD at both the lumbar spine and femur neck. Alendronate significantly improved bone loss and hypercalcemia in PHPT patients, without altering PTH and calcium levels.

Summary: This review summarised the available literature on the anticancer effects of BH3-mimetics in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas. Both putative and validated BH3-mimetics were investigated, and most of them showed promising results in inducing cell death and inhibiting tumor growth in preclinical settings. Combinations with conventional anticancer drugs or multiple BH3-mimetics enhanced the anticancer effects. However, further clinical trials are needed for a better understanding of the efficacy of BH3-mimetics in treating head and neck squamous cell carcinomas.

Summary: This study assessed the prevalence of maxillofacial lesions in children and adolescents in a Brazilian Oral Pathology Service and compared it with the available literature. The results showed that reactive salivary gland lesions and reactive connective tissue lesions were the most common soft tissue lesions, affecting children and adolescents equally. Odontogenic cysts and periapical inflammatory lesions were the most prevalent intraosseous lesions, with no significant differences between age groups, except for the odontogenic keratocyst, which was more common in adolescents. Some odontogenic tumors, such as ameloblastic fibroma and odontogenic myxoma, were significantly more common in children.

Summary: The role of blood and lymphatic microvascular density in the progression of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) was investigated in this study. It was found that the expression of anti-alpha-smooth muscle actin (a-SMA) and anti-endoglin (CD105) was associated with microvessel density (MVD), while anti-podoplanin (D2-40) was associated with lymphatic vessel density (LVD). Furthermore, high tumour budding (TB) and tumour thickness were identified as risk factors for OSCC progression and worse patient outcomes.

The most frequent lesions were intraosseous, with breast cancer as the most common primary tumor location in females and lung origin in males.
