Summary: Comparability between treatment groups can be assessed by using negative control outcomes, which provide evidence for residual confounding between groups. This retrospective study evaluated the comparability of postmenopausal women treated with different mechanisms of action osteoporosis medications. According to the predetermined comparability decision rules, patients initiating denosumab were comparable to those initiating zoledronic acid or alendronate.

Summary: The effectiveness of a single dose of zoledronic acid in maintaining improvements in peripheral bone density and microarchitecture achieved with the combination of denosumab and teriparatide was investigated. The results showed gradual decreases in total and cortical bone density, but remains above baseline, and no significant changes in trabecular parameters. Further research is needed to explore alternative therapeutic approaches for fully maintaining improvements in peripheral bone parameters.

Summary: Patients who experience atypical femoral fractures (AFFs) are at a high risk of subsequent fragility fractures, which is at least equal to or even greater than the risk observed after a peripheral major osteoporotic fracture (pMOF). Continuation of anti-resorptive drugs increases the risk of contralateral AFF, suggesting the need for further evaluation of optimal strategies for secondary fracture prevention.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of romosozumab and teriparatide on vertebral bone accrual, showing significant improvements with romosozumab in all parameters compared to teriparatide. While there was no significant difference in Cn.BMD gains between the two treatments, both were significantly better than the placebo group.

Summary: This study assessed the importance of clinical and genetic factors in the management of dyslipidaemia in the general population. It found that the management of dyslipidaemia in Switzerland is suboptimal, and the use of high potency statins is hindered by low posology. The use of genetic risk scores in the management of dyslipidaemia is not recommended.

Summary: Combination therapy of teriparatide and denosumab can significantly increase bone mineral density, while discontinuation of denosumab may lead to bone loss and increased fracture risk. A single dose of zoledronic acid effectively maintains the BMD improvements achieved with the combination therapy for at least 27 months. Spine BMD was largely preserved during this period as well.

Summary: This study found that the prognosis of individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) or anxiety disorder varies depending on the perspective used. When a narrow and short-term perspective is applied, the prognosis appears to be relatively favorable. However, when a longer and broader perspective is used, the prognosis becomes less favorable. This suggests that MDD and anxiety disorder should not be considered episodic disorders and require long-term monitoring and management.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL) levels and all-cause mortality. The results showed that higher sNfL levels were associated with worse cognitive function. After adjustment for confounding factors, higher sNfL levels were significantly and positively associated with all-cause mortality. Further research is needed to understand the biological mechanisms underlying this association.

Summary: The meta-analysis found that leukocyte telomere length was significantly shorter in patients with schizophrenia and related disorders compared to healthy controls, with no significant effects of age or illness duration on this difference. The results support the hypothesis of accelerated cellular aging in schizophrenia and related disorders, highlighting the need for large longitudinal studies with repeated telomere length measurements and appropriate assessments of associated factors.

Summary: Individuals with common mental disorders (depression, anxiety, phobia) are twice as likely to report an alcohol use disorder compared to those without common mental disorders. There were no clear differences in the odds of having an AUD among different types of CMDs, and study characteristics did not provide clear explanations for heterogeneity in results. No distinct patterns were found in the associations between having a CMD and binge drinking or alcohol consumption, respectively.

Summary: This study implemented screening for left ventricular dysfunction in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and found a small percentage of patients at high risk for heart failure. Male gender, prior stroke, chronic kidney disease, and newly detected atrial fibrillation were significantly associated with elevated NT-proBNP levels. The study suggests that NT-proBNP and ECG screening can aid in early detection of cardiovascular complications and improve long-term outcomes.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the overall risk of mortality in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in Hong Kong and the UK, compared to individuals without CVD and T2DM. The study found that patients with T2DM had a higher risk of mortality, particularly those with high hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels. This highlights the importance of optimal HbA1c control in reducing the risk of complications and mortality in diabetes management.

Summary: Recent literature has shown that patients with depression have increased immune activation. This study aimed to explore the relationship between treatment-resistant depression (TRD) and subsequent autoimmune diseases. A cohort study and nested case-control study were conducted using electronic medical records in Hong Kong. The results indicated a significant association between TRD and autoimmune diseases, particularly in organ-specific diseases. The findings suggest that controlling chronic inflammation in hard-to-treat depression may help prevent autoimmunity.
