Objective. - Onychomycosis (OM) or fungal nail infection is one of the most common fungal infections, which is increasingly prevalent. OM is caused by dermatophytes spp, yeasts and nondermatophyte moulds (NDMs). The purpose of this study was to identify and determine the prevalence rates, predisposing factors and causative agents of OM using clinical symptoms and microscopic morphometric findings. Materials and methods. - In the present study, 180 patients suspected of OM were evaluated by direct microscopy using KOH 20%, culturing in Mycosel and Sabouraud dextrose agar media and Olysia software for identifying the causative fungi of OM. Results. - From 180 referred patients, 118 (65.56%) had OM, of whom 79 (66.94%) were positive for infection with dermatophytes spp. Of the 79 cases, the commonest age group was 61-70 years (21%) with males being 46 (58.23%) and females being 33 (41.77%). Both the fingernail and toenail infections were most prevalent in male patients. Sex, diabetes and age above 60 years were significant predisposing factors for OM development. DLSO was observed as the only clinical pattern of OM and T. rubrum was the commonest dermatophyte isolate (49.34%). Conclusion. - This study showed that T. rubrum was the most common dermatophyte agent of OM in Iran. (C) 2017 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

The potential therapeutic role of PTR1 gene in non-healing anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania tropica

Monireh Sezavar, Iraj Sharifi, Pooya Ghasemi Nejad Almani, Bahram Kazemi, Noushin Davoudi, Samira Salari, Ehsan Salarkia, Ahmad Khosravi, Mehdi Bamorovat

Summary: The study compared the effect of MA on non-healing Leishmania tropica isolates and MA transfected non-healing isolates expressing PTR1. Results showed that PTR1 gene reduced drug efficacy, and inhibiting it with antisense could improve treatment for non-healing cases. These findings have implications for future prophylactic and therapeutic approaches for non-healing Leishmania isolates.

The in vitro effect of nanoliposomal amphotericin B against two clinically important dermatophytes

Saman Ahmad Nasrollahi, Azam Fattahi, Atefeh Naeimifar, Ensieh Lotfali, Alireza Firooz, Ali Khamesipoor, Seyed Ebrahim Skandari, Akram Miramin Mohammadi

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the antifungal activity of amphotericin B-loaded nanoliposomes against Trichophyton interdigitale and Trichophyton rubrum, as well as assessing resistance in vitro. The nanoliposomes showed lower MIC compared to amphotericin B and liposomes separately, without inducing drug resistance in tested strains. Amphotericin B-loaded nanoliposomes could be a potent antifungal treatment for onychomycosis with low probability of inducing drug resistance in dermatophyte species.

Mehdi Bamorovat, Iraj Sharifi, Setareh Agha Kuchak Afshari, Pooya Ghasemi Nejad Almani

Summary: Leishmaniasis, a neglected and old emerging/reemerging disease, has significantly increased and expanded in various geographical areas. Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a global public health concern, particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, Africa, Latin America, and the Indian subcontinent. The disease poses challenges in its management and control due to its epidemiological and clinical characteristics. The study reviews the interactive role of patients and healthcare management in controlling CL and emphasizes the importance of improving socioeconomic conditions, strengthening healthcare systems, and implementing appropriate control programs. However, there are still major challenges and gaps in controlling the disease. Overall, the article highlights the need for sustained efforts and collaboration across different sectors. Rating: 7/10.
