Purpose - Building on the Chinese guanxi perspective, the purpose of this paper is to develop a theoretical model that explains the indirect effects of social support from friends on social commerce intentions, as mediated through the relational aspects that potential buyers develop with sellers. Design/methodology/approach - Hypotheses are tested with partial least squares (PLS)-graph applied to data collected via a survey of social media users (n = 511). SPSS and PLS-graph are the statistical analysis tools used in this study. Findings - Relationship exists in social commerce interactions and its quality can be captured by swift guanxi and trust. These swift relationships matter as they drive users' behavioral intentions on social commerce sites. The informational and social support people receive from friends helps in improving the relationship quality and can indirectly influence user behaviors on these sites. Research limitations/implications - This study has relied on a convenient sampling and this may limit the generalizability of the findings. Future research should employ broader and more random sampling techniques to re-validate and extend the findings. Originality/value - The interpersonal aspect of relationship quality has received little attention in the social commerce literature. This study develops a theoretical model that explains consumers' intention in social commerce. The findings reveal the mechanisms through which different types of social support indirectly influence social commerce intentions. They provide a unique glimpse into consumer behavior in Chinese settings, in which the guanxi aspect of relationship quality highly matters.

Impulsivity and neural mechanisms that mediate preference for immediate food rewards in people with vs without excess weight

Xing Liu, Ofir Turel, Zhibing Xiao, Jinbo He, Qinghua He

Summary: People with excess weight exhibit higher impulsivity and lower probability of choosing delayed rewards, with higher BMI associated with even lower probability. They also score higher in impulsivity measures and show less activation in executive function areas during decision-making.

Slow-Wave EEG Activity Correlates with Impaired Inhibitory Control in Internet Addiction Disorder

Yawei Qi, Yuting Liu, Ziyou Yan, Shiqi Hu, Xinhe Zhang, Jia Zhao, Ofir Turel, Qinghua He

Summary: The present study found that individuals with Internet addiction disorder (IAD) have decreased slow-wave activity, particularly in the frontal areas, as indicated by the analysis of resting-state electroencephalography (EEG). Furthermore, the slow-wave activities in the frontal areas were correlated with the commission error rate in the Go/NoGo task in the IAD group. These findings suggest that the frontal slow-wave EEG activity may serve as a neurophysiological marker of IAD, providing insights into the underlying neural mechanisms of inhibitory control deficits and potential interventions.

Awe and Prosocial Behavior: The Mediating Role of Presence of Meaning in Life and the Moderating Role of Perceived Social Support

Ya-Nan Fu, Ruodan Feng, Qun Liu, Yumei He, Ofir Turel, Shuyue Zhang, Qinghua He

Summary: This study examines the relationship between awe and prosocial behavior in Chinese college students. The findings show that awe is positively associated with prosocial behavior, and this relationship is mediated by the presence of meaning in life. Additionally, perceived social support moderates these associations.

Coping with pandemics using social network sites: A psychological detachment perspective to COVID-19 stressors

Matti Mantymaki, A. K. M. Najmul Islam, Ofir Turel, Amandeep Dhir

Summary: This paper proposes and demonstrates that information technology (IT) can be an effective means of coping with life stressors, including those induced by pandemics. The study examines the use of social network sites (SNSs) as a coping mechanism during the COVID-19 pandemic and finds that psychological detachment through SNS use increases psychological well-being. However, the effect of stressors on psychological detachment varies, with work-family conflict motivating detachment and perceived isolation not influencing it.

Conflicting social influences regarding controversial information systems: the case of online dating

Qi Chen, Ofir Turel, Yufei Yuan

Summary: This paper examines the impact of positive and negative social influences on user adoption intention towards online dating services (ODS). The findings indicate that positive social influence has a stronger impact on perceived benefits and adoption intention, while negative social influence has a greater impact on perceived risks. Additionally, ambivalence negatively moderates the effects of social influences on adoption.

Followers' problematic engagement with influencers on social media: An attachment theory perspective

Samira Farivar, Fang Wang, Ofir Turel

Summary: This study examines the potential negative consequences of social media influencing on followers' wellbeing, and explores the factors that contribute to problematic engagement with influencers. The research findings suggest that influencer characteristics and followers' participation comprehensiveness play a role in fostering problematic engagement through attachment-based mechanisms. Additionally, following more influencers weakens the effect of followers' sense of belonging on problematic engagement.

Responses to ambivalence toward social networking sites: A typological perspective

Ofir Turel, Hamed Qahri-Saremi

Summary: Previous research has often assumed that users' attitudes towards social networking site (SNS) use can be positioned on a bipolar continuum from negative to positive orientation. However, recent findings suggest that this linear approach is too simplistic to capture the intricacies of SNS use patterns. This paper draws on ambivalence literature to propose that users can have both positive and negative orientations towards SNS use. The authors develop typologies of attitudinal and behavioral responses to ambivalence and test their hypotheses using data from ambivalent SNS users. The findings validate the typologies and offer insights into the possible outcomes of users' attitudinal responses to ambivalence in terms of SNS use patterns.

Situational Contingencies in Susceptibility of Social Media to Phishing: A Temptation and Restraint Model

Hamed Qahri-Saremi, Ofir Turel

Summary: User susceptibility to phishing messages on social media is an increasingly concerning issue in information security. This study presents a temptation and restraint model that explains users' engagement with social media phishing messages and their susceptibility to such attacks based on situational contingency factors. The findings offer insights into the genesis of social media phishing victimization and provide directions for future research in this area.

Why Do Data Analysts Take IT-Mediated Shortcuts? An Ego-Depletion Perspective

Maryam Ghasemaghaei, Ofir Turel

Summary: The study aims to understand why employees take IT-mediated shortcuts, finding that IT complexity drives ego depletion and, subsequently, the shortcuts. Moral integrity and setting goals play important roles in moderating the effects of ego depletion on shortcut-taking behavior. Ultimately, the integrated perspective explains the relationship between IT complexity and IT-mediated shortcuts.

The possible pitfalls of boards' engagement in the strategic management process

Dmitry Khanin, Ofir Turel, Chris Bart, William C. McDowell, Marianne Hock-Doepgen

Summary: Scholars supporting the embeddedness outlook advocate for directors' increased involvement in the strategic management process, while those endorsing the control outlook believe directors should focus on their supervisory duties. This paper, based on behavioral-agency theory, introduces a conduct outlook on boards. Findings from structural equations modeling analysis of data from a survey of 367 Canadian directors suggest that directors' participation in strategic management processes may have positive effects on their satisfaction with company performance, strategic planning, and strategies.
