Summary: A study in Denmark from 1997 to 2017 found that the incidence rates of fractures were higher in patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes compared to those without diabetes, except for foot fractures. The incidence of hip fractures decreased by 35.2%, 47.0%, and 23.4% in patients with type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and without diabetes, respectively, over the last 5 years. However, vertebral fractures increased by 14.8%, 18.5%, and 38.9% in the same groups. After age adjustment, patients with type 1 diabetes still had a higher risk of fractures compared to those without diabetes, while patients with type 2 diabetes had a risk similar to those without diabetes.

Summary: This study found a significant association between diabetes-related distress (DD) and work outcomes among employed individuals with type 1 diabetes, with emotional distress being positively related to burnout and social distress being negatively related to job satisfaction. The type of insulin treatment did not impact the outcomes significantly. The findings have important implications for individual health and illness management, burnout prevention, and occupational health measures.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the clinical and pharmacological profile of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients admitted to an emergency department. Family support was found to be associated with a lower incidence of high glycemia at admission. Higher blood creatinine levels were associated with higher blood glycemia and hyperuricemia, while hyperuricemia was associated with a higher incidence of acute cardiovascular diseases. Age, creatinine, and female gender were negatively correlated with hemoglobin levels. The use of certain medications related to metabolic dysregulation was associated with an increased incidence of decompensated heart failure, while the use of metformin or certain combinations of medications was associated with a lower incidence of kidney injury.

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether air pollutants modify the effects of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) on the occurrence of diabetes mellitus (DM). The results showed that exposure to high levels of PM2.5 and O-3 increases the risk of DM, and GDM acts synergistically with PM2.5 exposure in DM development.

Summary: The aim of this study was to determine the long-term cost-effectiveness and return on investment of implementing a structured lifestyle intervention to reduce excessive gestational weight gain and associated incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The results showed that the intervention was cost-saving compared with usual care from a healthcare perspective, with a return on investment of AU$1.22 per dollar invested. These findings demonstrate significant cost savings and improved health outcomes for women during pregnancy and over their lifetime.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the effect of type 2 diabetes mellitus on cardiorenal syndrome. It found that type 2 diabetes mellitus patients accounted for nearly half of the patients with cardiorenal syndrome and were younger than non-diabetic counterparts. Type 2 diabetes mellitus doubled the risk of cardiorenal syndrome and increased the risk of death, cardiovascular events, and end-stage kidney disease, but not ischemic stroke.

Summary: Diabetes is a highly heterogeneous metabolic disease with different types and clinical manifestations. Distinguishing between types and defining subtypes is a major challenge in precise treatment. T2D is the main type of diabetes, and certain gene variants have been shown to increase the risk of T2D. HNF1 alpha gene mutations can cause different types of diabetes and exhibit high polymorphism.

Summary: The analysis aimed to determine if type 2 diabetes and HbA1c levels predict 30-day hospital readmission after metabolic and bariatric surgery. Results showed uncontrolled type 2 diabetes is associated with increased readmission and reduced weight loss post MBS. Additionally, type 2 diabetes and prediabetes were also linked to decreased weight loss after MBS.

Summary: The Bigger Picture (TBP) uses a social justice approach to engage youth in understanding the social determinants of type 2 diabetes, receiving positive feedback from both adults and students. Intervention students were more likely to connect race/ethnicity with T2D as a social justice issue, while most of them also mentioned individual dietary behavior as a determinant. Both intervention and comparison students reported a strong sense of belonging at school and confidence in civic engagement.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between diagnosed and undiagnosed Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) and its complications with socio-economic gradients in a large population cohort in the Netherlands. It found that the prevalence of diagnosed and undiagnosed T2D was higher in low-income individuals, and lower socio-economic status was positively associated with the number of T2D complications.

Summary: The medical hospitalization costs for patients with diabetic kidney disease (DKD) are significantly higher compared to diabetic patients without complications, with higher costs and longer hospital stays observed for DKD patients undergoing dialysis. A direct correlation was found between average cost and duration of diabetes in DKD patients, while no correlation was found between diabetic nephropathy stage and medical hospitalization costs. Without preventive measures, DKD will continue to pose a heavy economic burden.

Summary: This review article summarizes the advances in the use of dietary flavonoids for managing type 2 diabetes. While the hypoglycemic effects of flavonoids have been widely reported in animal studies, their therapeutic effects on diabetes in clinical trials are limited. However, many flavonoid compounds can ameliorate diabetes complications through their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory activities. The clinical data on the anti-diabetic effects of flavonoids are still limited, and the relationship between the structure of flavonoids and their anti-diabetic activity is not well understood. Foods rich in flavonoids can prevent and manage type 2 diabetes, and combining them with other components can enhance their anti-diabetic potential.

Summary: The study conducted a systematic review and network meta-analyses to examine the effects of disease-modifying agents for managing sickle cell disease (SCD) in children and adolescents. The results showed that higher doses of hydroxyurea or fixed doses of hydroxyurea and immunotherapy/monoclonal antibodies were more effective in preventing vaso-occlusive crisis, acute chest syndrome, and the need for transfusions. Conversely, l-arginine and placebo were more prone to these events. The overall safety of the therapies was considered acceptable, although antiplatelets and sulfates may lead to more severe adverse events.

Summary: This study aimed to identify natural bioactive compounds (NBCs) as potential inhibitors of the spike (S1) receptor binding domain (RBD) of the COVID-19 Omicron variant using computer simulations (in silico). Through virtual screening, molecular docking, molecular dynamics (MD), molecular mechanics/Poisson-Boltzmann surface area (MM/PBSA), and molecular mechanics/generalized Born surface area (MM/GBSA), previously proven NBCs were analyzed. Naringenin-4'-O glucuronide showed promising results as a potential drug candidate against COVID-19.

Summary: In silico assays were conducted to identify natural bioactive compounds (NBCs) that could potentially inhibit spike (S1). NBCs with proven biological in vitro activity were obtained from the ZINC database and analyzed through virtual screening and molecular docking. Eight machine learning models were used to validate the results and predict drug-likeness and toxicity. Among the 170,906 compounds analyzed, 34 showed high affinity with S1, with most belonging to the class of coumarins. NBC5, NBC14, NBC15, and NBC27 had promising results in ADMET predictions and exhibited similar binding affinity to remdesivir and molnupiravir. Feselol and three other NBCs were identified as potential candidates for treating COVID-19.

Summary: This study investigated the risk factors associated with death from COVID-19 in the USA, Italy, Spain, and Germany. The results showed that ICU bed demand, ventilation device demand, and hospital/ICU admissions had an important impact on patients' mortality. Therefore, further investments in hospitals' infrastructure and the development of innovative devices are necessary to fight the pandemic.
