Bloodstream infection (BSI) occurred in 21 of 121 patients (17%) receiving venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation within the median time of 6 days after initiation (interquartile range, 4-19 days). Longer duration of arterial catheterization and more blood transfusions were independently associated with BSI, which is associated with poor clinical outcomes.

Juwon Kim, Danbee Kang, Hyejeong Park, Minwoong Kang, Ki Hong Choi, Taek Kyu Park, Joo Myung Lee, Jeong Hoon Yang, Young Bin Song, Jin-Ho Choi, Seung-Hyuk Choi, Hyeon-Cheol Gwon, Eliseo Guallar, Juhee Cho, Joo-Yong Hahn

Summary: This study compared the risk of adverse cardiovascular events between patients receiving moderate-intensity statins plus ezetimibe and those receiving high-intensity statins after a coronary revascularization procedure. The results showed that patients receiving moderate-intensity statins plus ezetimibe had similar rates of major adverse cardiovascular events as patients receiving high-intensity statins.

Summary: The study aimed to compare the prognosis of coronary microvascular dysfunction according to different patterns of CFR and IMR. The results showed that decreased CFR was associated with an increased risk of heart failure and cardiovascular death, while elevated IMR alone with preserved CFR did not show significant prognostic value.

Bioinformatics Analysis of Gene Expression Profiles for Diagnosing Sepsis and Risk Prediction in Patients with Sepsis

Hayoung Choi, Jin Young Lee, Hongseok Yoo, Kyeongman Jeon

Summary: This study aimed to compare gene expression profiles between patients with sepsis and healthy volunteers to determine the accuracy of these profiles in diagnosing sepsis and predicting sepsis outcomes. Certain upregulated genes showed high accuracy in diagnosing sepsis and predicting in-hospital mortality, while downregulated genes showed high accuracy in predicting mortality of patients with sepsis.

Summary: The mechanical properties, safety, and efficacy of drug-eluting metal-based stents (MBS) and bioresorbable vascular scaffolds (BVS) were evaluated. The BVS showed better mechanical properties and lower restenosis rate than the MBS. Thinner and completely absorbed BVSs should be developed and evaluated for long-term safety and efficacy.

Data-Efficient Deep Generative Model with Discrete Latent Representation for High- Materials

Namjung Kim, Dongseok Lee, Youngjoon Hong

Summary: The rapid advancement of additive manufacturing technologies allows for the creation of pixelated or voxelated structures known as digital materials in 2D or 3D, respectively. These digital materials offer maximum design flexibility without constraints on geometry and material, resulting in unique physical properties and functionalities that cannot be achieved through conventional manufacturing processes. However, the vast design space of digital materials presents a significant challenge in maximizing their availability. In this study, a novel deep generative model with discrete representations of the latent space was developed for designing digital materials. The proposed model, inspired by the discrete nature of digital materials, achieves comparable reconstruction and prediction accuracies with only one-third of the data usage compared to conventional generative models. The physical insights provided by the discrete representations of the latent space demonstrate a strong correlation between certain discrete representations and the mechanical behavior of digital materials, such as auxeticity. Furthermore, the proposed model is proven to be an excellent tool for generating functionally graded structures and previously unseen auxetic structures.

Prognostic implication of downregulated exosomal miRNAs in patients with sepsis: a cross-sectional study with bioinformatics analysis

Beomsu Shin, Jin Young Lee, Yunjoo Im, Hongseok Yoo, Junseon Park, Joo Sang Lee, Ki-Young Lee, Kyeongman Jeon

Summary: This study examined the differential expression of exosomal miRNAs in plasma samples from sepsis patients and healthy controls. Four downregulated miRNAs (hsa-let-7f-5p, miR-331-3p, miR-301a-3p, and miR-335-5p) were identified as independent prognostic factors for in-hospital and 90-day mortalities among sepsis patients. Bioinformatics analysis suggested that these miRNAs may contribute to sepsis pathogenesis through PI3K-Akt and MAPK signaling pathway.

Unsupervised Legendre-Galerkin Neural Network for Solving Partial Differential Equations

Junho Choi, Namjung Kim, Youngjoon Hong

Summary: In recent years, machine learning methods have been applied to solve partial differential equations (PDEs) and dynamical systems, leading to the emergence of a new research field known as scientific machine learning that combines deep neural networks, statistical learning and classical problems in applied mathematics. This paper proposes a novel numerical algorithm that utilizes machine learning and artificial intelligence to solve PDEs. Based on the Legendre-Galerkin framework, an unsupervised machine learning algorithm is proposed to learn multiple instances of solutions for various types of PDEs. The proposed neural network is applied to general 1D and 2D PDEs with different boundary conditions, as well as convection-dominated singularly perturbed PDEs exhibiting strong boundary layer behavior.
