This letter analyzes the responses of a class of grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) inverters to grid transients. It is observed that during most of the sudden grid transients, the PV inverter momentarily responds in a way that is opposite of the inertial response of existing synchronous generators. Although the size of these power responses is relatively small and they are fast, their aggregation can have a destabilizing effect on the grid as the level of penetration of such inverters goes up.
