Post-partum uterine disorders and reproductive tract infections cause ovarian dysfunction and infertility. Histone deacetylases (HDACs) prevent the relaxation of chromatin, and positively or negatively regulate transcription. Hence, HDACs play a pivotal role in altering the gene expression that impact different signalling pathways underling ovarian dysfunction. Thus, HDAC inhibitors (HDACi) may act as potential therapeutic targets in the treatment of an array of disorders impacting ovarian function.

Microwave-assisted valorization and characterization of Citrus limetta peel waste into pectin as a perspective food additive

Poonam Sharma, Khwaja Osama, Sunita Varjani, Alvina Farooqui, Kaiser Younis

Summary: Machine learning techniques were used to evaluate the effects of process parameters on pectin yield from Citrus limetta peel. The optimized conditions of microwave power, pH, and microwave time were determined as 600 W, 1, and 180 s respectively. Physicochemical analysis confirmed that the extracted pectin could be used as a food additive. Extracting pectin from Citrus limetta peel using microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) is an eco-friendly and efficient approach to transform waste into a versatile food additive.

Tricks and tracks in waste management with a special focus on municipal landfill leachate: Leads and obstacles

Swayansu Sabyasachi Mohanty, Shaili Vyas, Yamini Koul, Priya Prajapati, Sunita Varjani, Jo-Shu Chang, Muhammad Bilal, Konstantinos Moustakas, Pau Loke Show, Meththika Vithanage

Summary: Landfilling is the most commonly used method for disposing of municipal solid waste globally, but it leads to the formation of toxic leachate. This study aims to investigate the emerging concerns related to landfill leachate and the long-term priorities of stakeholders in implementing solutions to reduce its harmful effects. New effective and integrated leachate treatments have been developed due to the ineffectiveness of traditional methods and the emergence of new contaminants and regulations.

Resolution of conflict of reduced sludge production with EBPR by coupling OSA to A2/O process in a pilot scale SBR

Anwar Khursheed, Faris Mohammad A. Munshi, Abdulaziz Ibrahim Almohana, Abdulrhman Fahmi Alali, Mohab Amin Kamal, Shamshad Alam, Omar Alrehaili, Dar Tafazul Islam, Manish Kumar, Sunita Varjani, A. A. Kazmi, Vinay Kumar Tyagi

Summary: The reappearance of assimilated nitrogen and phosphorus in any biological process is a challenge to nutrient removal. A novel reactor configuration combining an anaerobic reactor and Anaerobic-Anoxic-Aerobic (A2O) SBR was tested for enhanced sludge and phosphorus removal. The reactor operated at low SRT for phosphorus assimilative uptake and resulted in a significant increase in phosphorus enrichment. However, the sludge reduction also occurred during the process. The success of the configuration lies in reconciling conflicting parameters of enhanced phosphorus uptake and sludge growth.
