Hurricane impacts on plant-herbivore networks along a successional chronosequence in a tropical dry forest

Hurricanes are one of the major natural forces affecting plant and animal dynamics in areas where tropical dry forests (TDF) are located. Most studies of hurricane impacts have evaluated the effects on plants, but few have addressed how interactions between plants and animals are affected. We investigated the effect of hurricane Jova on plant-lepidopteran interaction networks along a TDF successional gradient in the Chamela region on the Mexican Pacific coast. We surveyed plant-lepidopteran larvae trophic interactions during 2007-2010 and re-surveyed this association in 2012 and 2013, following the landfall of a category 2 hurricane. The parameters of plant-lepidopteran interaction networks changed after the hurricane. Network size, number of compartments and specificity (H2) diminished, while connectance and robustness increased. Network differences throughout the chronosequence remained similar to the patterns observed in previous studies showing larger networks and higher levels of robustness but lower connectance in late successional stages than in recently abandoned pastures. It is interesting that even though the hurricane affected plant-lepidopteran interaction networks, the topology related to forest succession remained unaltered after the passage of the hurricane, demonstrating the long legacy of the human footprint on ecosystems.

Summary: Maize is a vital crop and an integral part of traditional cultures in Mexico. However, the fall armyworm poses a significant threat to its production, and climate change further exacerbates the situation. Through laboratory assessments, this study examines the impact of temperature on the life cycle of fall armyworm and the response of different maize landraces to herbivory under current and predicted climatic conditions. The findings highlight the need for selecting appropriate maize varieties that can effectively cope with herbivores in a changing climate.

Stingless bees (Apidae: Meliponini) at risk in western Mexico

Summary: The study demonstrates how highly connected tree and herbivore species jointly determine the role of mahogany in the plant-herbivore network. The effect of core tree species on mahogany's importance was found to be mediated by core beetles. These results provide insight into the effect of tree species composition and highly interactive herbivores in shaping the role of species in the herbivore network.

Response of hybrid and landrace maize to foliar and root herbivore insects

Summary: Mexico is the center of maize domestication and has a wide variety of landrace genotypes that are economically, culturally, and socially important. These landrace maize genotypes are mainly grown by smallholder farmers for local and specialized culinary markets. However, all maize genotypes are vulnerable to insect herbivory, particularly from Fall Armyworm and White grub larvae, which cause significant yield losses by feeding on leaves and roots, respectively. This study examined the response of landrace and hybrid maize genotypes to foliar and root feeding insects and found that landrace maize genotypes suffered more from herbivory by Fall Armyworm than hybrid maize genotypes. For root herbivory, there were no clear differences between landrace and hybrid maize, and only one out of the five genotypes for each type of maize was negatively affected by the presence of White grubs. These findings highlight the importance of considering different pest management strategies for maize genotypes in agroecosystems.

Buprestid trophic guilds differ in their structural role shaping ecological networks with their host plants

Summary: This study used network theory tools to assess the structure of a plant-buprestid multi-species network and examined whether trophic guilds and taxa differ in their patterns within the network. The results revealed a non-nested and highly modular pattern in the plant-buprestid network, with specialized interactions between most buprestid and host plant species. Different trophic guilds and taxa have distinct ecological roles within the network.

Invader's success: behavioural and reproductive plasticity of interacting exotic dung beetles

Summary: Dung beetles have been introduced to non-native sites to remove dung in cattle pastures. This study evaluated the behavior and reproduction of two dung beetle species (Euoniticellus intermedius and Digitonthophagus gazella) when they interact with the same or other species outside their native range. The results showed that E. intermedius brood masses were lighter in traps with more total brood masses. In the laboratory, D. gazella induced faster dung colonization by E. intermedius and conspecifics. Presence of conspecifics or heterospecifics reduced reproductive success in D. gazella, indicating intense competition for dung. E. intermedius females emerged larger in the presence of D. gazella, suggesting differential maternal investment triggered by competitors. In conclusion, behavioral and reproductive plasticity are crucial for dung beetles to become successful invaders.

Changes in Coleopteran assemblages over a successional chronosequence in a Mexican tropical dry forest

Summary: Coleopterans, especially in tropical dry forests, show different responses to vegetation change over the course of forest succession. The abundance and richness of Coleopteran morphospecies are greatest in pastures, and the most abundant family is Chrysomelidae. Herbivores are the most abundant trophic guild, followed by predators and saprophages beetles. To preserve the maximum number of species associated with tropical dry forests, large tracts of forest should be protected to allow natural successional dynamics.

Self-thinning of Scots pine across Europe changes with solar radiation, precipitation and temperature but does not show trends in time

Summary: This study analyzed the effects of site and climate on the self-thinning line in Scots pine forests in Europe. The results showed that species tolerance, temperature, and precipitation influenced the slope of the self-thinning line. In terms of the intercept, latitude and radiation had compensating effects. Time did not show significant trends in the self-thinning line. The study highlights the need to adapt management strategies and models based on self-thinning to different latitudes. Climate change has not yet significantly impacted the self-thinning trajectory, but a continuous rise in temperature and high precipitation may accelerate the self-thinning process and result in increased biomass accumulation.

Positive interactions in shaping neighborhood diversity during secondary forests recovery: Revisiting the classical paradigm

The study also revealed the effects of density dependence on the mortality and regeneration of different tree species, and highlighted the importance of early-arriving tree species in facilitating the establishment and diversity of late-arriving counterparts.

Comparison of resistance to pest infestation between native and exotic mangrove species

Are western European oak forests man-made constructs? The pedoanthracological perspective

Summary: Fagus sylvatica L. is a competitive tree in European temperate deciduous forests, but often sporadic or absent in present-day stands where Quercus spp. are dominant. Through soil charcoal analysis in the Lorraine Plateau in France, the presence of Fagus and Quercus in mature Quercus stands was confirmed. Radiocarbon dating results indicated that historical forest management caused the replacement of Fagus by Quercus, starting from the Bronze Age.

Using high-resolution images to analyze the importance of crown size and competition for the growth of tropical trees

Summary: This study examines the influence of canopy structure on tropical tree growth using data collected through unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and field measurements. The results show that combining UAV and field data can improve the prediction of tree diameter increment. Diameter at breast height and crown area are complementary predictors, and crown-based competition indices significantly enhance prediction models. The calibrated model at one site can accurately predict growth at another site.

Summary: Regeneration failures in the closed-crown boreal forest, resulting in the creation of open lichen woodlands, can be restored through clear-cutting, scarification, and natural seeding. Clear-cutting combined with scarification promotes seedling establishment, and scarification creates suitable microsites for germination. Seedling growth in lichen woodlands is higher when logging and scarification are combined, but lower compared to feather moss stands. Afforestation through natural seeding following scarification could be a cost-effective option for restoring lichen woodlands.

Effects of forest management on the key fungal decomposer Fomes fomentarius in European beech forests - Lessons from a large-scale experiment

Summary: The study aimed to assess the effects of different forest management strategies, dead wood types, and microclimates on Fomes fomentarius. The results showed that the occupancy of Fomes fomentarius was lower in control stands, while the percent cover occupied on snags under a closed canopy was higher. Increasing the number of snags and maintaining dense forest canopies could enhance the presence of Fomes fomentarius as well as provide important microhabitats for various arthropods.
