Outbreaks of edwardsiellosis have severe impact on the aquaculture production of African catfish Clarias gariepinus. In this study, feed supplemented with apple mangrove Sonneratia caseolaris extract was evaluated for its protective effect against Edwardsiella tarda infection in African catfish. Results showed an increase in growth performance and higher survival rate in the treatment groups in a dose dependent manner. Haematological analyses showed an increase in white blood cell count in the treatment groups. Histopathological analysis revealed degenerative changes and regeneration of liver tissue architecture in both the control and treatment groups. However, the presence of inflammatory cells was found exclusively in the kidney of T3 treatment group that was supplemented with the highest dose of extract at 3.17 mg/ml, which inferred the activation of immune response in the fish. Contrast to the deteriorative alteration observed in the kidney of the control group due to E. tarda infection, treatment group exhibited tissue regeneration and well-defined kidney tissue architecture at 3 dpi. Taken together, these results demonstrated that supplementation with the methanol extract of S. caseolaris possesses protective effect in African catfish against the infection of E. tarda.

Cancer and apoptosis: The apoptotic activity of plant and marine natural products and their potential as targeted cancer therapeutics

Gul-e-Saba Chaudhry, Abdah Md Akim, Yeong Yik Sung, Tengku Muhammad Tengku Sifzizul

Summary: Cancer is a complex and challenging disease, but the screening of plant and marine extracts may lead to the discovery of more effective anti-cancer compounds. Inducing apoptosis, a deeper mechanism of cell death, is essential for successful chemotherapy. Several plant and marine-derived anti-cancer compounds have been approved for clinical trials. Therefore, the development of new natural anti-cancer drugs is crucial.

Optimization of C50 Carotenoids Production by Open Fermentation of Halorubrum sp. HRM-150

Ying-Chao Ma, Mei-Rong Gao, Huan Yang, Jun-Yao Jiang, Wei Xie, Wan-Ping Su, Bo Zhang, Yik-Sung Yeong, Wu-Yan Guo, Li-Ying Sui

Summary: This study aims to find more cost-effective and manageable ways of producing C-50 carotenoids. The results showed that using natural brine medium and adding glucose, sucrose, and lactose can enhance both biomass and carotenoid productivity. The best conditions for open fermentation were salinity 20-25%, rotation speed 150-200 rpm, and pH 7.0-8.2. The open fermentation of Halorubrum is a promising method for producing C-50 carotenoids.

Siti Zuraida Zulkipli, Chee Ping Tan, Ying Giat Seah, Hon Jung Liew, Yeong Yik Sung, Masashi Ando, Min Wang, Yantao Liang, Andrew McMinn, Wen Jye Mok

Summary: This study investigated mercury contamination in common commercial marine fish from the South China Sea. The muscle tissue mercury levels of four species were analyzed, and their trophic level was assessed. The results revealed variations in mercury concentrations among species, with Epinephelus heniochus having the highest concentration and Scomberomorus guttatus having the lowest. Factors such as size, food composition, and habitat were identified as the major influences on mercury levels in these fishes.

Kaiyang Zheng, Yue Dong, Yantao Liang, Yundan Liu, Xinran Zhang, Wenjing Zhang, Ziyue Wang, Hongbing Shao, Yeong Yik Sung, Wen Jye Mok, Li Lian Wong, Andrew McMinn, Min Wang

Summary: This study systematically analyzed the genomes, taxonomic features, and distribution patterns of Pseudoalteromonas phages. A total of 143 Pseudoalteromonas-associated phage genomes were identified and assigned to 47 viral clusters. The prevalence of integrated proviruses and filamentous phages suggest the viral lysogenic life cycle in Pseudoalteromonas. These phages play a role in marine biogeochemical cycles and their abundance and distribution vary across polar areas and the deep sea. This study expands our understanding of marine Pseudoalteromonas phages and their interactions with their hosts.
