Summary: There is evidence linking exposure to toxic environmental agents with adverse reproductive and developmental health outcomes, including infertility, miscarriage, preterm birth, low birth weight, neurodevelopmental delay, and cancer. Obstetric care clinicians should be knowledgeable about local toxic environmental exposures and provide information to patients. Clinical encounters offer opportunities to screen and counsel patients on reducing toxic environmental exposures.

Summary: Research ethics committees (RECs) have the responsibility to assess the justification of proposed research. This study found that RECs perceived a link between the type of research methodology and the level of risk to participants. Based on this finding, a hierarchy of risk was constructed to guide RECs in reviewing research protocols, and a guidance sheet was developed to aid their decision-making process.

Summary: This study found the presence of Flavivirus antigens and RNA in sperm cells of symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects within 28 days during the ZIKV epidemic, indicating potential transmission from asymptomatic males to pregnant women with consequences to the fetus. The results have important implications for public health, highlighting the possibility of nonarthropod-born, silent transmission facilitated by sperm cells.
