Summary: End-of-life reverse osmosis membranes can be repurposed for forward osmosis applications as recycled FO and transformed recycled FO membranes, with the latter showing superior performance in terms of water permeate fluxes. The transformation process involves interfacial polymerization to further enhance FO membrane performance. This study demonstrates the feasibility of utilizing discarded RO membranes for wastewater treatment in FO technology, contributing to circular economy and sustainability in membrane science.

Summary: In this study, hydrophilic sulfonated kraft lignin (SKL) was utilized to modify the selective layer of thin-film composite (TFC) forward osmosis (FO) membranes. The modified membrane showed a significant improvement in water flux and fouling resistance compared to the unmodified membrane when tested against different solutions. This work demonstrates a novel application for SKL as a hydrophilic modifier in the synthesis of TFC polyamide membranes with enhanced permeation and antifouling properties.

Summary: Membrane cleaning is crucial in wastewater treatment systems, and sodium docusate can serve as an effective cleaning agent. This study evaluated the efficiency of sodium docusate in cleaning fouled forward osmosis membranes and found that factors such as dose rate, contact time, flow or static conditions, and process configuration can impact the cleaning effectiveness. The results showed that sodium docusate can achieve remarkable flux recovery at a low concentration and can be used for static cleaning without the need for additional pumping energy, making it cost-effective and energy-saving.

Summary: In this study, a novel antifouling strategy was proposed to overcome severe membrane fouling in forward osmosis (FO) process for sludge thickening. A self-forming protective layer was used to coat the FO membrane surface, resulting in improved membrane hydrophilicity and negative charge. The modified FO membrane with a protective layer showed superior sludge thickening efficiency and lower flux decline compared to the control FO membrane, indicating the effective mitigation of fouling by the protective layer.

Summary: The research aims to determine the performance of forward osmosis, reverse osmosis, and membrane distillation in the extraction of alcohol. The results showed that membrane distillation is a viable strategy in a hybrid FO-MD approach, achieving ethanol flux values close to forward osmosis membranes. Other technical criteria for membrane performance evaluation, such as maintaining a low reverse salt flux and a low or no water flux, were also proposed. RO-82V and FO-CTA membranes presented the best performance in terms of Ethanol/Salt flux ratio, while FO-TFC membrane performed best in terms of Ethanol/Water flux ratio.

Summary: Novel high-quality thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes were synthesized using functional multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) through organic phase controlled interfacial polymerization for enhanced forward osmosis (FO). The membranes exhibited good hydrophilicity and separation efficiency, with water flux about twice that of thin film composite (TFC) membranes without MWCNTs-APTES, demonstrating advanced selectivity and permeability.

Summary: A novel thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane modified by MoS2@Zeolite X nanocomposite was used for desalination by the forward osmosis (FO) method. The incorporation of MoS2@Zeolite X nanocomposite particles into the polyamide selective layer of the TFN membrane improved its desalination performance and antifouling properties. The TFN-MZ(2) membrane, containing 0.01wt% MoS2@Zeolite X, showed the highest water flux and antifouling tendency among the membranes tested.
