Toxic blooms of Ostreopsis spp. are greatly challenging to monitor due to the complexity and variability of cell repartition among benthic and pelagic compartments. This results in marked differences in employed methodologies for the survey of their dynamics and hampers the definition of the associated toxic risk. The present study aims at testing and improving common methodologies used for sampling, processing and counting of field samples. It contributes to the identification of the most suitable strategies for the monitoring and mitigation of Ostreopsis blooms in coastal waters. For a sampling based on the collection of macrophytes, the role of the fixative addition and of agitation steps in the efficiency of epiphytic cell collection was defined. For planktonic estimations, the influence of the volume used for concentrating water samples was characterized as a function of Ostreopsis cell abundance. The deployment of artificial substrates was tested and confirmed strong advantages of this new sampling methodology, including an integration of a part of the spatial and temporal variability of the cell distribution.

Advancements towards restoration of the endangered limpet Patella ferruginea Gmelin, 1791 through controlled reproduction

Maria Paola Ferranti, Javier Guallart, Giorgio Fanciulli, Pier Augusto Panzalis, Mariachiara Chiantore

Summary: This study describes for the first time the successful spawning induction in P. ferruginea and the larval development of the species. The fertilization rate in these events was high, and settlement ability was reached at 3-4 days after fertilization, but metamorphosis occurred between 7 and 32 days with considerable variability.

Assessment of the allelochemical activity of Ostreopsis cf. ovata and the ovatoxins towards competitive benthic microalgae

Eva Ternon, Anne-Sophie Pavaux, Alexandra Peltekis, Marin-Pierre Gemin, Cecile Jauzein, Benjamin Bailleul, Rodolphe Lemee, Olivier P. Thomas

Summary: This study investigated the impact of the toxic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis cf. ovata on co-occurring microalgal species through in vitro experiments. The results showed that O. cf. ovata exhibited weak allelopathic effects on the growth of the microalgal species, but its mucus layer could accumulate the potent ovatoxins and negatively affect the growth of the microalgae.

Phytoplankton and environmental drivers at a long-term offshore station in the northern Adriatic Sea (1988-2018)

Francesca Neri, Tiziana Romagnoli, Stefano Accoroni, Alessandra Campanelli, Mauro Marini, Federica Grilli, Cecilia Totti

Summary: This study analyzed a long-term (1988-2018) data set of phytoplankton and physico-chemical parameters in an offshore station of the LTER Senigallia-Susak transect. The study found that the annual cycle of phytoplankton in this area differed from that in coastal areas, with the highest abundance in June and the lowest in November. The main component of the phytoplankton community was phytoflagellates, and their abundance paralleled that of the total phytoplankton. The summer phytoplankton maximum was mainly explained by the allochthonous input of DIN and PO4 brought by low salinity waters.

Stefano Accoroni, Marika Ubaldi, Simone Bacchiocchi, Francesca Neri, Melania Siracusa, Maria Giovanna Buonomo, Alessandra Campanelli, Cecilia Totti

Summary: The bioaccumulation of OVTX toxins in mussels was found to be correlated with the abundance of Ostreopsis during blooms. The study suggests that the Italian guidelines for managing Ostreopsis blooms are effective in preventing human intoxication through mussel contamination.

Accounting for environmental stress in restoration of intertidal foundation species

Summary: Restoring foundation species in historical habitats can be challenging, especially if adult facilitation is crucial for the survival of early life stages. Exposure to transient, low environmental stress and outplanting clumped individuals may enhance resilience and facilitate successful establishment of early life stages in zones of reduced abiotic stress.

Phytoplankton communities in a coastal and offshore stations of the northern Adriatic Sea approached by network analysis and different statistical descriptors

Francesca Neri, Tiziana Romagnoli, Stefano Accoroni, Marika Ubaldi, Angela Garzia, Andrea Pizzuti, Alessandra Campanelli, Federica Grilli, Mauro Marini, Cecilia Totti

Summary: This study compared two long-term phytoplankton time series in the Northern Adriatic Sea and found that the coastal station was more variable and influenced by the Western Adriatic Current and riverine inputs. The offshore phytoplankton community showed higher biodiversity due to its more oligotrophic condition. Graph-network analysis was a useful tool to study the phytoplankton community. Evaluating the Good Environmental Status should consider oceanographic differences and use multiple statistical approaches.

Troubles Never Come Alone: Outcome of Multiple Pressures on a Temperate Rocky Reef

Annalisa Azzola, Virginia Picchio, Valentina Asnaghi, Carlo Nike Bianchi, Carla Morri, Alice Oprandi, Monica Montefalcone

Summary: Climate change is causing various impacts on rocky reef ecosystems globally. The Portofino Marine Protected Area in the NW Mediterranean experienced thermal anomalies, a mucilaginous event, and the expansion of Caulerpa cylindracea during the summer of 2018. A severe storm also occurred later in October. This study analyzed the effects of these pressures on rocky reef communities at different depths and timescales, highlighting the significant changes and the need to understand the impacts of multiple pressures on coastal ecosystems.

Gaia Vaglio Laurin, Alexander Cotrina-Sanchez, Luca Belelli-Marchesini, Enrico Tomelleri, Giovanna Battipaglia, Claudia Cocozza, Francesco Niccoli, Jerzy Piotr Kabala, Damiano Gianelle, Loris Vescovo, Luca Da Ros, Riccardo Valentini

Summary: Phenology monitoring is important for understanding forest functioning and climate impacts. This research compares the phenological behavior of European beech forests using Tree-Talker (TT+) and Sentinel 2 satellite data. The study finds differences in the information derived by the two sensor types, particularly in terms of season length, phenology changepoints, and leaf period variability. TT+ with its higher temporal resolution demonstrates precision in capturing the phenological changepoints, especially when satellite image availability is limited.
