Summary: This study identifies significant geographic variation in elective sigmoid resection for diverticulitis and suggests that factors such as surgeon density and hospital characteristics play a major role in this variation. Further research and stronger national guidelines are needed to improve patient selection for surgery.

Summary: Several animal models of cathartic colon induced with different laxatives have been established for studying the disorder's pathological mechanisms and treatment methods. The advantages and limitations of these models have been evaluated and analyzed, with hopes of developing more convenient and stable models in the future.

Summary: This study investigated the association between percentage of body fat (PBF) and the risk of diverticulosis. The results showed that individuals with higher PBF, especially females, had an increased risk of developing diverticulosis. Additionally, bioelectrical impedance analysis may provide a simple, available, and radiation-free method for assessing the risk of diverticulosis.

Summary: Overweight and obesity are global public health problems that have increased considerably in prevalence. Diet-induced obesity animal models can replicate human overweight and obesity, with various protocols to lead to excess fat deposition. Key points for inducing obesity through diet include evaluating body weight, fat gain, inflammation, hormonal concentration, blood glycemia, lipid profile, liver health, and considering diet composition and calorie overconsumption for obesity development.

Summary: In Japanese patients, early colon cancer was more frequently found in those with colonic diverticulosis (CD) compared to those without CD. The presence of CD may be an important indicator for detecting colon cancer during colonoscopy examination.

Summary: Varicocele is a major cause of male infertility, and its pathogenesis involves inflammation and other factors. Recent studies have shown that certain functional foods and nutraceuticals have anti-inflammatory effects and may be beneficial in the treatment of varicocele. The exact mechanisms and therapeutic approaches, however, still require further research.

Summary: High fiber intake is associated with reduced risk of diverticulitis or hospitalization due to diverticular disease, with fruits and cereal fiber having a protective effect. However, vegetable fiber does not show the same benefit. Red meat consumption and a Western dietary pattern are linked to increased risk of diverticulitis. Alcohol use appears to be associated with diverticular bleeding.

Summary: This study explores the relationship between bladder enlargement and diabetes in rodent models, finding significant variations in bladder enlargement across different models, particularly in type 2 diabetes models. The study concludes that bladder enlargement is not primarily driven by glucose levels.

Summary: Diverticulosis of the colon is a progressively worsening disease that typically begins in early adulthood and worsens with age. Early recognition of diverticular development is crucial for young patients to diagnose and manage potential complications effectively. The article highlights the pathological and radiological features of early diverticular formation and the subsequent development of intramural diverticulitis.

Summary: This review summarizes the effects of stress on the bidirectional connections between the brain and the gut, as well as the differences in gut microbiota composition across animal models of stress and depression. It also discusses the potential impact of dietary changes and the promising effects of supplementation with prebiotics and probiotics on the pathophysiology of depression.

Summary: The FAIR for Research Software (FAIR4RS) Working Group has proposed FAIR guiding principles for research software, which provide a foundation for optimizing software reuse. However, these principles are aspirational and lack practical instructions. To address this, we have developed the first actionable FAIR-BioRS guidelines for biomedical researchers, along with a workflow in the FAIRshare software application.
