We analyzed circulating Meteorin-like (METRNL) levels in human. Serum METRNL levels were significantly lower in subjects with diabetes mellitus compared with those without diabetes. Serum METRNL was negatively correlated with the serum glucose level and insulin resistance. Metformin treatment did not increase the serum METRL levels after 12 weeks. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Safety and effectiveness of linagliptin in Korean patients with type 2 diabetes: A postmarketing surveillance study

Jaehyun Bae, Kee-Ho Song, Jong Suk Park, Jae Hyuk Lee, In-Kyung Jeong, Hyun Jin Kim, Young-Hyo Lim, Jae-Hyoung Cho, Sung Hee Choi, Yoon-Sok Chung, Eun Seok Kang

Summary: A postmarketing surveillance study of linagliptin in Korean patients with type 2 diabetes demonstrated excellent safety and glycaemic effectiveness. Adverse drug reactions were mainly gastrointestinal and metabolic disorders, with special interest in pancreatic diseases, cardiac diseases, and hypoglycaemia. Factors associated with better effectiveness included lower BMI, shorter diabetes duration, and higher baseline HbA1c, while diabetic complications, dyslipidaemia, and use of sulphonylureas were linked to a poorer response.

Summary: IL-4 and IL-13 increase the secretion of FGF21 in the liver through the JAK-STAT6 signaling pathway and PPARα. IL-4 administration increased FGF21 protein levels in the liver in a STAT6-dependent manner, but did not induce FGF21 secretion in the epididymal white adipose tissue.

Summary: One of the great advantages of serum biomarkers is that they provide easily obtainable information on tumor characteristics and prognosis. In this study, serum ERBB2 and NRG4 were found to be independent prognostic factors for survival and tumor recurrence in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). They showed a possible synergistic effect and could be used for evaluating prognosis and monitoring treatment response in HCC patients.

Increased Pro-Inflammatory T Cells, Senescent T Cells, and Immune-Check Point Molecules in the Placentas of Patients With Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Yea Eun Kang, Hyon-Seung Yi, Min-Kyung Yeo, Jung Tae Kim, Danbit Park, Yewon Jung, Ok Soon Kim, Seong Eun Lee, Ji Min Kim, Kyong Hye Joung, Ju Hee Lee, Bon Jeong Ku, Mina Lee, Hyun Jin Kim

Summary: This study found that gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) placentas exhibited upregulation of mitochondria or DNA replication related pathways and downregulation of T-cell immunity related pathways. The GDM group had a higher proportion of CD4+ T cells and CD8+ T cells in the maternal placenta, along with increased senescent T cells. These findings suggest that changes in senescent T cells and immune-escape signaling may be related to the pathophysiology of GDM.

Effects of rosuvastatin/ezetimibe on senescence of CD8+T-cell in type 2 diabetic patients with hypercholesterolemia: A study protocol

Sang Hyeon Ju, Bon Jeong Ku

Summary: A decade ago, systemic inflammation was recognized as a cause of type 2 diabetes mellitus and its complications. Recent studies have shown that statins and ezetimibe have anti-inflammatory effects. This study aims to explore the effects of statin/ezetimibe therapy on CD8+ T cell senescence in patients with type 2 diabetes and hypercholesterolemia.

Effect of cholesterol-lowering agents on soluble epidermal growth factor receptor level in type 2 diabetes and hypercholesterolemia

Jun Choul Lee, Kyong Hye Joung, Ji Min Kim, Seon Mee Kang, Hyun Jin Kim, Bon Jeong Ku

Summary: Soluble epidermal growth factor receptor (sEGFR) levels are elevated in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and positively correlate with blood glucose and cholesterol levels. Cholesterol-lowering treatment can significantly reduce sEGFR levels, with the reduction being more significant when LDL-C levels are lowered. sEGFR may play a significant role in insulin resistance and inflammation, and can be used as a biomarker to predict lipid-lowering treatment response in type 2 diabetes patients with hypercholesterolemia.

Expression of LONP1 Is High in Visceral Adipose Tissue in Obesity, and Is Associated with Glucose and Lipid Metabolism

Ju Hee Lee, Saet-Byel Jung, Seong Eun Lee, Ji Eun Kim, Jung Tae Kim, Yea Eun Kang, Seul Gi Kang, Hyon-Seung Yi, Young Bok Ko, Ki Hwan Lee, Bon Jeong Ku, Minho Shong, Hyun Jin Kim

Summary: The study demonstrated that mitochondrial stress response in visceral adipose tissue is associated with the elevated expression of LONP1 in obese individuals, which is correlated with enhanced glucose and lipid metabolism. Mice with higher Lonp1 expression in adipose tissue showed better systemic glucose metabolism, indicating a potential role of LONP1 in regulating metabolic phenotypes in obesity.
