Summary: MRONJ is a condition that is becoming more common in dental and maxillofacial practice, requiring comprehensive, accessible, and up-to-date data. Besides bisphosphonates, angiogenesis inhibitors and anti-RANKL monoclonal antibodies can also increase the risk of the disease. Thorough physical examination, periodic correction of dental prostheses, and adequate preparation for oral procedures can prevent or minimize the risk of MRONJ.

Summary: We investigated the incidence and trend of osteonecrosis of the jaw caused by antiresorptive agent dose in Kure city, Japan over a 5-year period. The results showed that the incidence of osteonecrosis of the jaw was 24 times higher among osteoporosis patients with low-dose agents and 421 times higher among cancer patients with high-dose agents compared to the general population without agents.

Summary: Bisphosphonates, commonly used anti-resorptive medications, inhibit osteoclast activity by disrupting the macrophage colony-stimulating factor pathway. Oral surgery in patients undergoing bisphosphonate therapy carries a high risk of developing osteonecrosis of the jaws.

Summary: The aim of this randomized study was to evaluate the effect of pentoxifylline and tocopherol in patients that had developed MRONJ after tooth extractions. The study showed that patients who received pharmacological treatment had better mucosal healing after 1 month and clinical and radiographic healing of the bone lesion after 6 months.

Summary: Antiresorption drugs like bisphosphonates and monoclonal antibodies are used in the treatment of osteoporosis and other bone-related diseases. These drugs have been associated with cases of osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ). Risk factors include extraction procedures in oral surgery, particularly in the mandible and maxilla. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to determine if there is a greater risk of MRONJ in male or female subjects and to assess the involvement of osteonecrosis in different extraction sites. After analyzing 24 studies, the results showed a trend of higher risk in males and in the posterior mandibular sector, but further studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: Osteonecrosis of the jaw is a severe clinical condition characterized by exposed bone that does not heal over time. Diagnosis is primarily clinical with imaging feedback playing a confirmatory role. Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw, particularly induced by bisphosphonates, has been widely discussed, but the exact mechanism remains debatable.

Summary: Medications that inhibit bone resorption are commonly prescribed by orthopedists, hematologists, or oncologists, with dental professionals often overlooking their impact on oral health. While primarily affecting older individuals due to oncological issues or postmenopausal consequences, anyone can be at risk. Careful interviews and analysis of patient history and disease should always be conducted before taking any action with these medications.

Summary: This paper describes a series of fifty patients with confirmed medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), who were prescribed a drug holiday as part of their management. The primary outcome was complete healing as documented in the clinical notes. Nearly three-quarters of patients achieved complete healing, and MRONJ recurrence was reported at 30%. There was a lack of evidence for an association between all recorded exposures and the primary MRONJ outcome using multivariate Cox regression.

Summary: In 2014, the AAOMS changed the term from BRONJ to MRONJ due to the increasing number of osteonecrosis cases associated with different antiresorptive and antiangiogenic therapies. Actinomyces infection is commonly encountered in MRONJ cases, presenting a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations.

Summary: Surgical resection showed higher complete healing cases and statistically significant difference in recurrence rate compared to debridement. Debridement is an unfavorable prognostic factor when compared to surgical resection, with a 4.9 times higher risk of recurrence. Quality of life mean values improved significantly in the surgical resection group and slightly in the debridement group.

Summary: This study evaluated the 12-month incidence of MRONJ after tooth extractions and possible related risk factors in osteoporotic patients treated with oral bisphosphonates. The results showed a low risk of MRONJ after tooth extraction in these patients, with only 1 case of osteonecrosis observed after 12 months. Gender was found to have a significant correlation with MRONJ onset.

Summary: This study analyzed the intrapapillary capillary loop (IPCL) patterns of oral lichenoid lesions using narrow-band imaging (NBI) and correlated them with histopathological outcomes. The results showed that NBI cannot differentiate among oral lichen planus (OLP), oral lichenoid lesion (OLL), and oral lichenoid reaction (OLR) lesions. However, IPCL pattern IV may serve as a clinical marker for malignant transformation in chronic inflammatory lesions during long-term follow-up.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has posed challenges for early diagnosis and management of severe cases. The spread of viruses like monkeypox in non-endemic countries is causing difficulties for healthcare professionals. Proper case definition and clinical examination are crucial for early case identification. Monkeypox patients experience prodromal symptoms like fever and rash, and the disease can lead to complications and have a case-fatality ratio between 1 and 10%. Prevention campaigns and control measures are important in preventing infection and transmission.

Summary: This article provides an analysis of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dental emergencies through a literature review and retrospective cohort study. The study found an increase in the prevalence of dental emergencies and related complications, limited availability of dental care, and significant regional/national heterogeneity. Additionally, aerosol-generating procedures were generally avoided and hospitalization duration was reduced. Comorbidity patients and males were less likely to seek regular dental care during the post-lockdown pandemic.
