This study aimed to investigate the influence of Lactobacillus rhamnosus intake on the development of candidiasis and cytokines release. Candida suspensions were inoculated into the oral cavity of experimentally immunosuppressed mice for candidiasis induction. The animals were divided into experimental groups: candidiasis with no probiotic intake (F), candidiasis with probiotic intake during Candida inoculation (FP), and candidiasis with probiotic intake 14 days before inoculation with Candida (FPP); and control groups: (C), (CP), and (CPP) without inducing candidiasis with probiotic intake in the same manner as groups F, FP, and FPP, respectively. After these periods, samples were collected from the oral cavity for yeast counts and, after euthanasia, the tongues of the animals were removed for histological analysis. Sera samples were also collected for analysis of IL-1 beta, TNF-alpha, INF-gamma, IL-12, IL-4, and IL-10. FP group showed lower Candida counts in the oral cavity, and the presence of Candida was almost not detected in FPP group. In tissues, the counts of fungi were significantly lower in FPP group, followed by FP. Groups that consumed probiotics also had lower histological and inflammatory infiltrates compared to F. Cytokines analysis demonstrated low concentrations of TNF-alpha, IL-12, IL-4, and IL-10 in all the groups, and no statistical difference between them. The production of IL-6 could be better detected, and the experimental groups that consumed the probiotic showed significant lower levels of this cytokine. The results suggest that L. rhamnosus intake, especially preventively, may avoid or decrease the development of candidiasis in immunosuppressed mice. This work adds scientific evidences that probiotics intake can avoid the development of candidiasis.

IL10 promoter rs6667202 polymorphism is functional in health but not in grade c periodontitis patients: A pilot study

Camila S. Stolf, Catharina M. Sacramento, Helvis E. S. Paz, Renato A. Machado, Lucas P. Ramos, Luciane D. de Oliveira, Karina Cogo-Muller, Mauro P. Santamaria, Karina G. S. Ruiz, Renato C. V. Casarin

Summary: This study demonstrated the association between the IL10 promoter rs6667202 SNP and IL10 expression and production. In patients with periodontal health, the AA and AC genotypes were associated with lower levels of IL10, while in patients with Perio4C, other factors may be affecting the IL-10 response despite the genetic variation.

Biofilm formation and cell viability on monolithic zirconia with silver-doped sodalime glass

Amanda de Oliveira Pinto Ribeiro, Ana Carolina da Silva, Felipe de Camargo Ribeiro, Clarice Ferreira Sabino, Juliana Campos Junqueira, Lucas de Paula Ramos, Luciane Dias de Oliveira, Tiago Moreira Bastos Campos, Renata Marques de Melo Marinho

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of silver-doped soda-lime glass application on the roughness, biofilm formation, cell viability, and flexural strength of zirconia. The results showed that silver-doped soda-lime glass inhibited the growth of Candida albicans, with Ag5 having the strongest antimicrobial effect. However, Ag5 had higher roughness and negatively affected cell viability and flexural strength. Glass infiltration increased the flexural strength of zirconia and improved fracture resistance.

Summary: This study evaluated the phototransformation potential of the glycolic extract of Curcuma longa and the antifungal activity of Curcuma longa, curcumin, and antifungal photodynamic therapy (aPDT) with blue light-emitting diodes (LED) on Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis in vitro. The toxicity of Curcuma longa and curcumin in a Galleria mellonella model was also assessed. The results showed that Curcuma longa, curcumin, and aPDT using blue LED had an antifungal effect on both Candida albicans and Candida tropicalis. Furthermore, the extract of Curcuma longa and curcumin did not exhibit toxicity in the Galleria mellonella model.

Antimicrobial action of four herbal plants over mixed-species biofilms of Candida albicans with four different microorganisms

Nadia Domingues, Lucas de Paula Ramos, Larissa Marques Pereira, Pamela Beatriz do Rosario Estevam dos Santos, Liliana Scorzoni, Thais Cristine Pereira, Amjad Abu Hasna, Claudio Antonio Talge Carvalho, Luciane Dias de Oliveira

Summary: This study evaluated the antimicrobial effect of four herbal plant extracts on mixed-species biofilms composed of Candida albicans and other pathogenic bacteria. The results showed that these extracts had inhibitory effects on the mixed-species biofilms, and some extracts even completely eliminated the biofilms. Therefore, the glycolic extracts of P. paniculata, H. virginiana, S. barbatiman, and G. sylvestre may be considered as potential alternatives for endodontic therapy.

Metal Nanoparticles to Combat Candida albicans Infections: An Update

Paulo Henrique Fonseca do Carmo, Maira Terra Garcia, Livia Mara Alves Figueiredo-Godoi, Anna Carolina Pinheiro Lage, Newton Soares da Silva, Juliana Campos Junqueira

Summary: Candidiasis is a common fungal infection caused by Candida albicans. Current antifungal treatments have limitations such as toxicity and drug resistance, leading to the exploration of nanocarrier systems like metal nanoparticles. This review focuses on the use of silver, gold, and iron nanoparticles as potential antifungal agents against C. albicans, discussing their mechanism of action and potential for reducing drug resistance.
