Seasonal changes in composition and yield of artisanal fishery catches may occur due to natural fluctuations in hydrological regime, fishers, and gear used. In this context, the present study aimed to test the hypothesis that the hydrological cycle of the Araguaia River influences the activity of small-scale commercial fishing by examining the following predictions: fishery yield is influenced by the hydrological regime; the main species exploited through artisanal fishing can change with variations in hydrological regime; and there are differences between male and female fishers in both yield and main exploited species due to differences in the sites that they explore and the gear that they use. Results from the study demonstrated a significantly higher fishery yield during the low-water season, when the catch per unit effort (CPUE) was 24.8 kg/fisher/day, compared to an ebb season CPUE of 19.9 kg/fisher/day. The main species caught by artisanal fisheries was indeed influenced by the hydrological regime of the Araguaia River and the fisher's gender, which was associated with differences in fishing locations and gear used. These findings suggest that both Araguaia River hydrology and fisher gender should be taken into consideration in developing management strategies for achieving sustainable yields. Of note, our results for fishery yields were 305 % higher than official Brazilian estimates for the entire Araguaia basin over the same period, which suggests underestimation in the official statistics.

Does seed dispersal mode matter?

Summary: Zoochory plays a fundamental role in the colonization of habitat by plants with large and heavy seeds like Araucaria angustifolia. This study investigates the impact of different zoochoric dispersal modes and deposition sites on the long-term recruitment success of this endangered South American conifer. The results show that seed survival is critical for the reproductive success of A. angustifolia, with only buried seeds having high survival rates.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of benthic macroinvertebrate community (BMIC) in rivers passing through rural and urban areas, and its correlation with various physical-chemical parameters, nutrients, and heavy metals in the water and sediment. The results showed that BMIC varied between different areas and its composition was influenced by nutrient and heavy metal contents.

Summary: The study investigated the temporal reproductive pattern and use of different biotopes as areas of reproduction and initial development by analyzing larval density data of Salminus brasiliensis in the Parana River. The results showed that larvae in different stages were found in different biotopes, with pre-flexion and flexion stages mainly in the Parana River channel, and yolk-sac stage in the tributaries. Temperature, pH, and rainfall were found to be the main variables influencing larval density. Conservation efforts should focus on providing suitable conditions for migration and development in different biotopes of the Parana River.

Summary: The effects of urbanization and ruralization on the functional diversity indices and the composition of functional traits of Neotropical stream fish communities were tested in this study. The results showed that urbanization had a greater impact on the composition of functional traits compared to ruralization.
