Summary: The study found that several factors, including involvement of the mesorectal fascia, nerve and vascular invasion, intraoperative blood transfusion, and Dukes staging, were independent risk factors for postoperative recurrence or metastasis of rectal cancer. These findings have significant clinical value for the follow-up and prognosis of patients with rectal cancer after surgery.

Summary: This study analyzed the role of C-reactive protein (CRP) as a prognostic factor in Ewing's sarcoma. The results showed that serum CRP levels were significantly different in patients with a poorer prognosis and in patients who presented distant metastasis, indicating it as a sensitive prognostic risk factor in Ewing's sarcoma cases.

Summary: This study found that frequent postoperative surveillance did not improve overall survival or recurrence-free survival in patients with colorectal cancer, but it did improve post-recurrence survival. Intensive surveillance was associated with improved post-recurrence survival and overall survival in high-risk patients.

Summary: Japanese patients with very high-risk cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (cSCCs) have a higher cumulative incidence of relapse and disease-specific death (DSD). Therefore, prognosis prediction is crucial. The novel Japanese Risk Factor Scoring Systems (JARF scoring) can accurately predict the risk of recurrence and death in Japanese patients with very high-risk cSCCs.

Summary: Background data on breast cancer survival and its prognostic factors are lacking in the United Arab Emirates. This study is the first to report breast cancer survival and investigate associated prognostic factors in the UAE. The 2- and 5-year survival rates are within the norms compared to other countries, with tumor grade and cancer stage at presentation significantly impacting survival.

Summary: This study investigated the prognosis of skip metastasis in papillary thyroid carcinoma patients and proposed a more appropriate N staging. The results showed that patients with skip metastasis had significantly lower recurrence rates compared to those with central lymph node metastasis. Therefore, skip metastasis could be categorized as N1a stage according to the AJCC TNM staging system.

Summary: Identifying risk factors for distant metastasis in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma is crucial for treatment planning, with primary intraosseous carcinoma of the mandible, cervical lymph node metastasis at levels IV and V, and the presence of pathological extranodal extension being significant factors. Aggressive treatment strategies should be considered for patients with these risk factors to prevent or manage distant metastasis.

Summary: This study investigated the usefulness of the pterygomandibular raphe (PMR) for diagnosing invasion and determining surgical methods in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) with posterior invasion. The results showed that OSCCs with invasion beyond the PMR had significantly higher recurrence rates and poorer survival rates. The initial surgery is crucial for local control.

Summary: This multicenter, retrospective study aimed to determine the appropriate resection margin for early tongue cancer and investigate the need for additional treatment for close margins and stump dysplasia. The study found that a horizontal margin of 3.3 mm was defined as a close margin. Close margins were significantly correlated with local recurrence but did not affect survival. Additional treatment was also found to be ineffective in patients with dysplasia at the surgical margin.

Summary: Several periodontitis-associated species induce genes related to various biological processes, including cell proliferation, apoptosis, immune response, and carcinogenesis. A review of studies showed strong associations between gingival squamous cell carcinoma (GSCC) and three periodontitis-related oral bacteria (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Fusobacterium nucleatum, and Prevotella intermedia). These bacteria produce lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and secrete cytokines and molecules that are involved in carcinogenesis, tumor progression, and metastasis. The elevated levels of LPS in GSCC can be assessed through functional analysis. Polymicrobial infections can synergistically induce inflammation and upregulate proinflammatory molecules, promoting carcinogenesis. This review aids in identifying novel targets for the treatment and prevention of GSCC, which may be associated with periodontal pathogens.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of facial artery musculomucosal (FAMM) flap for treating medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) in the anterior area. Successful wound healing was achieved in all patients with stage 2 or 3 MRONJ after 6 months of follow-up. The study suggests that FAMM flap is an effective surgical option for well-vascularized wound healing in these patients.

Summary: This article summarizes the latest research on the relevance of tumor budding (TB) and partial epithelial-mesenchymal transition (p-EMT) as prognostic markers in the tumor microenvironment (TME) of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Understanding the mechanism of TB onset and the relationship between p-EMTs may facilitate the development of novel diagnostic and prognostic methods, and targeted therapies for the prevention of invasion and metastasis.

Summary: This study investigated the association of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and MICA with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and their potential as biomarkers. The results showed that a high ratio of CD45RO-expressing TILs was associated with improved disease-free/overall survival in OSCC patients, while a low ratio of CD45RO-expressing TILs was associated with poorer survival. Furthermore, the expression of MICA in tumors was related to the proportion of CD45RO-expressing TILs. Therefore, CD45RO-expressing TILs can serve as biomarkers for predicting the prognosis of OSCC.

Summary: Palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) is a stubborn skin disease characterized by small aseptic pustules on the palms and soles, which can worsen due to metal and dental focal infections. This study reports a case of PPP exacerbation after orthognathic surgery, attributing it to metal allergy from the plates or screws used.
