Summary: In this study, a photocatalytic method was successfully used to degrade fucoidan, a sulfated polysaccharide. The degradation process did not strip the sulfate groups, but resulted in a reduction in the galactose/fucose ratio. Additionally, sulfated oligosaccharides were identified in the degradation products. The degraded products showed similar anticoagulant activity to the original polysaccharide.

Summary: The study proposed a closed loop biorefinery employing sustainable technologies for the complete exploitation of invasive brown macroalgae Sargassum muticum. Sequential extraction methods were used to recover fucoidan efficiently and increase antioxidant capacity content. Additionally, ethanol and heat were produced from the resulting spent solid, verifying the cascade biorefinery as an appropriate strategy for the valorization of Sargassum muticum.

Summary: Viscosity and tensiometric measurements were used to investigate the interaction between linear sodium alginate and branched fucoidan. The results showed the formation of a water-soluble interpolymer complex due to hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions. The intensity of the interaction increased with an increase in fucoidan content. Both alginate and fucoidan exhibited weak surfactant properties. The resulting alginate-fucoidan complex had high surface activity and showed a synergistic effect. The activation energy for viscous flow process was determined for each component and their blend.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of fucoidans extracted from Sargassum glaucescens on promoting human hair growth, finding that fucoidans with a molecular weight higher than 1 kDa demonstrated hair growth-promoting ability, especially oligo-fucoidans. The effects of fucoidans on HFPDC proliferation were correlated with gene expressions of IGF-1 and LEF-1, and hair growth-promoting activity was observed in mice models after treatment with Sargassum glaucescens fucoidan extracts, indicating the potential of fucoidan as a topical medicine for alopecia treatment.

Summary: The study on mung bean seedlings showed that low doses of seaweed liquid extracts (SLEs) can stimulate plant growth in a hormetic manner, while high doses can lead to a decrease in certain morphological parameters. This suggests that the application of SLEs at appropriate doses can enhance crop productivity, but the consequences of high dose applications need further exploration.
