Summary: Spatial heterogeneity of species (beta diversity) is an important attribute of ecological communities. In this study, we surveyed natural and restored saltmarshes and found that topography is a key driver of plant community diversity. Restored saltmarshes had lower topographic heterogeneity and beta diversity compared to natural marshes. Manipulating topography can increase beta diversity in restored sites.

Summary: In addition to shear viscosity, other texture parameters such as adhesiveness and cohesiveness are important for safe swallowing in individuals with oropharyngeal dysphagia. Texture analyzers can provide valuable information on food properties, but the protocols and instruments for assessing adhesiveness and cohesiveness are limited. This study aimed to characterize four dysphagia thickeners using different texture analyzer settings and found that the choice of test type and probe influenced the results, while the test speed could be standardized to 1 mm/s.

Summary: Products derived from remote sensing reflectances (R-rs(lambda)), such as chlorophyll or particle size, are widely used in oceanography, but may have fewer degrees of freedom (DoF) than measured wavebands or derived products. Global sea surface hyperspectral R-rs(lambda) dataset has DoF = 4, while MODIS-like multispectral equivalent in situ data and SeaWiFS equivalent have DoF = 4 and DoF = 3, respectively. Remote sensing products based on existing satellites' R-rs(lambda) should not be treated as independent, and future algorithms need to consider correlations between R-rs(lambda) wavebands.

Summary: This paper presents a general model of balance control and applies it to the balancing of a bicycle. The model is based on the theory of stochastic optimal feedback control and has a computational system implemented in the central nervous system. The model is able to balance a bicycle under realistic conditions and is robust to inaccuracies in learned sensorimotor noise characteristics, however, it is not robust to inaccuracies in movement speed estimates.

Summary: In Japan, where there is vaccine hesitancy, providing adequate information to parents about HPV vaccination is crucial. A study found that sharing a cervical cancer survivor's story increases parents' willingness to consider HPV vaccination, but the effect diminishes after 3 months. Furthermore, this narrative approach does not increase the vaccination rates in eligible children.
