Summary: Recent cytotoxicity research suggests fullerenes can enter cells and cross the blood-brain barrier, but the toxicity mechanism behind their penetration through biological membranes remains unclear. Molecular dynamics simulations show that the distribution of fullerenes in lipid bilayers is influenced by the bilayer's peroxidation degree and fullerene polarity, with pristine fullerenes translocating faster than Janus fullerenes. No mechanical disruption of model bilayers was observed during the simulated times regarding the toxic response of fullerenes.

Summary: Selective construction of two distinct alkyl-alkyl bonds across the C=C bond of unactivated olefins is a persistent challenge. Traditional transition metal-catalysed alkene-dicarbofunctionalization reactions suffer from non-bond forming side reactions and limited substrate scope. However, an electron-shuttle catalysis approach has been demonstrated to overcome these limitations and facilitate alkyl-alkyl bond formation through radical-unsaturated bond addition. Mechanistic studies support the involvement of carbon-centered radical species and radical addition processes in this modular alkylative aminomethylation reaction.

Summary: This study investigated the physicochemical properties of blended fuels composed of various alkyl chain lengths of levulinate esters and 0# fossil diesel. The results showed that levulinate esters with longer alkyl chains exhibited better stability when mixed with diesel, while those with shorter alkyl chains can separate easily at low temperatures. The physicochemical properties of the blended fuels improved significantly with the increase of carbon chain length and levulinate esters content.

Summary: This study reported on the fabrication of highly efficient and reusable BiFeO3 nanofiber-based membranes for photo-activated organic pollutant removal with negligible colloidal release. Metal-enhanced photocatalytic properties were achieved by coating the nanofiber membranes with a few nanometers of platinum. The optimized photocatalyst showed impressive removal efficiency under solar illumination, making it ideal for large-scale deployment.

Summary: The study developed a new collective variable (CV) that accurately describes peptides translocating across membranes, incorporating peptide insertion, local membrane deformation, and peptide internal degrees of freedom related to its charged groups. By comparing different CVs and evaluating three common methods for free-energy calculations, the study showed that all of these components are necessary for an accurate description of peptide translocation. The developed CV allows for reliable and effective calculation of the free energy of peptide translocation, which could be useful in designing spontaneously translocating peptides.

Summary: This study analyzes the structural changes in phosphatidylcholine lipid membranes caused by the introduction of insoluble CoFe2O4 nanoparticles. Changes in nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum, infrared spectrum, and ionic conductivity of membranes were observed with the addition of nanoparticles. The presence of nanoparticles in membranes was confirmed using atomic force and magnetic force microscopy. The structural changes in the membranes near the lipid C-O bonds caused by nanoparticles were observed using scanning near-field optical microscopy. Analysis of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra allowed identification of the affected atomic groups in the membrane surface layers. Conductivity measurements of the bilayer membranes were performed in different modes and showed an increase in ionic conductivity depending on the concentration of hydrophobic nanoparticles, which induce surface distortion and pore creation. The concentration dependence demonstrated a percolation threshold, which was analyzed using fractal theory approach.

Summary: In this study, CA/MnO2 nanocomposites were synthesized using a cost-effective magnetic stirring method. Various characterization techniques were used to evaluate the nanocomposites, and the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine-B was employed to assess their performance. The results showed a significant decrease in rhodamine-B concentration under UV-visible light, indicating the potential of the CA/MnO2 nanocomposites as efficient visible-light-responsive photocatalysts for water treatment.

Summary: Eukaryotic subcellular organelles are surrounded by lipid membranes. Vesicle trafficking is the primary mechanism for delivering organellar proteins in an endomembrane system. However, proteins translated in the cytosol are directly imported into their target organelles.

Summary: This study presents a fast, scalable, and transition-metal-free borylation of alkyl halides enabled by electroreduction, providing efficient access to primary, secondary, and tertiary boronic esters. More than 70 examples, including the late-stage borylation of natural products and drug derivatives, demonstrate the broad utility and functional-group tolerance of this protocol. Mechanistic studies reveal the dual role of B(2)cat(2) as both a reagent and a cathodic mediator, facilitating the electroreduction of difficult-to-reduce alkyl bromides or chlorides at a low potential.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of alkyl chain length of surfactant on the adsorption process behavior by modifying mineral pumice with different surfactants. It was found that an extended surfactant chain increased the adsorption capacity, with the Langmuir isotherm model showing the best fit to the experimental data. The results suggest that hydrophobic interactions of the modifiers play a role in the adsorption processes.

Summary: Despite advances in other technologies, diesel engines fueled by liquid fuels will continue to dominate the transportation and heavy machinery application market. This study investigated the impact of carbon chain length, oxyfuel type, oxygen content, and blending ratio of esters and alcohols as additives in diesel fuel. The findings showed that the additives can reduce smoke emissions and provide a suitable trade-off between engine performance and emissions.
